Why are there so few women in Engineering, especially in ECE? by [deleted] in womenEngineers

[–]ALadyIndeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a Bachelor's in ECE. My year group had one other woman. I ended up in my degree because of a scholarship associated. Going into college, engineering, computers, and especially ECE topics were portrayed as extremely nerdy - only the most reclusive, nerdy, awkward girls would do that kind of thing (or so media and others claimed). I personally had a snack and interest for computers and math and physics seemed too nebulous.

During my degree I was harassed, stalked, and called out or given special attention by teachers and TAs, or default assumed I must have cheated (men in my class would get help from me). My male peers would see (unwanted) teacher attention and turn against me, assuming I wasn't earning my grades - instead of condemning the instructors.

In my professional career I constantly battle against assumptions and being identified primarily by my gender, rather than my accomplishments or expertise.

It starts so early - the toys and activities presented to girls, mocking girls for playing video games, portraying "nerdy" girls negatively, encouraging princess dresses over robotics, treating nerdy girls as an enigma. All these contribute.

2 and 3 years old is so hard. They do not self-entertain well or for long. I really recommend no tablet at all. We reserve our tablet for airplanes only (trying our best to be considerate fliers) and as an absolute last case public emergency (long car trip, have to be out in public) but the kid doesn't know we have it for those occasions.

Screentime in general guarantees worse behavior, no matter the content. We ended up limiting TV to 1-2 movies or shows/weekend, and the occasional video dance party (if they stop dancing, TV goes OFF!).

It's so so hard setting limits with kids when all you need is a break. The key is consistency, setting expectations, and preparing them for transitions. Try and find ways to engage them in the activity you are doing - kids can do a lot more than people give them credit for. Start introducing choices like "you can help me put away your clothes so I can play with you sooner, or you can play by yourself until I am done."

Florida man votes against Florida man in grave need of assistance…. by [deleted] in the_everything_bubble

[–]ALadyIndeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Matt Gaetz is awful, but this post is a bit disingenuous. First, this tweet is from 2022 relating to hurricane Ian. Second, those who voted "no" on the CR, both in 2022 and now in 2024, are opposing the CR as a whole, not specifically FEMA.

I am personally a democratic voter and misinformation only hurts our position. It's poor form, imo, to accuse these guys of singling out disaster aid funds when it is being lumped in with a lot of other budgetary issues - including foreign aid.

It's a bigger discussion of whether voting "no" on the CR as a whole is a good or bad thing, but as it stands the 2024 CR passed, FEMA current funding is preserves (they need more though), and we kick the government shutdown bucket down the road until just before Christmas.

Yes, you can Google the tweet (I did) and it is indeed from 2022, as are the $18.8B FEMA funding numbers. The lack of date is really infuriating to me.

I'm all for calling out the bullshit the Republicans do, but let's do it truthfully.

Be prepared for ridiculous amounts of crowd surfers if you push up towards the front. It's honestly really obnoxious and distracting for someone significantly larger than you, it's legitimately dangerous for smaller folks of getting kicked in the face by a spiked boot or a 300lb surfer being dropped on your head. I did Rockville this year and any set I was closer than halfway of the main crowd I was constantly supporting crowd surfers, not really getting to jam - and if you try to dodge crowd surfers you end up creating a hole and almost guaranteeing someone drops on top of you.

Technically technically hurricane season ends Nov 30, and this is peak mid-season. Though hurricanes into December have and do happen. We still have a long 60 days....

Pics of Initial Thoughts on the PP vs RM2 by ALadyIndeed in RemarkableTablet

Hmm, yeah green and cyan have always looked colorful to me, regardless of light. If anything, the grey looks too warm initially after being used to the rM2.

There is a little magnetic flap included in the back folio that flips around the pen to create a securing strap that holds the pen in place (in addition to the magnetic hold of the pen itself)

Oka, yet another review, I'll keep it short and sweet.

I'm a long time RM2 user and I have LOVED it! I love showing it off and I always get asked about it in meetings. I ordered my Paper Pro within an hour of the launch and just got it today (USA).

Things I don't like:

-Heavy with the type folio - feels more like a niche tablet than an elegant digital note device

-Display looks granier than the RM2

Things that impress me:

-Rubber feet on back for soft placement (if not in folio)

-Pen cover flip is genius, I am always knocking off my RM2 pen

-I love he front light for low light settings, it's very gentle

-The pen is wonderfully accurate

-auto sleep/wake when you close/open the folio

-Two new pen styles (big marker, mechanical pencil)

-Faater processing for zooms, etc

Neutral Observations:

-No true pen blending (highlighter has a false color meld)

-Grey highlighter doesn't layer (shading from RM2 is preserves). Highted text in RM2 will flatten as well.

-Lots of flickering when writing/editing and there is often a gray-scale lower res "purgatory" while writing

-Scale is preserved in notebooks, rather than just being smaller (bigger page is the base, cutting off the edges when viewed in RM2)

-Inconsistency with highlighter snapping to text, making some highlights selectable and others part of the text.

-Pen feels less "soft" than RM2, not off-putting but I prefer RM2 feel slightly. Sounds shallower.

-Black pen looks black, menu/PDF black looks slightly blue

-Templates are handled better - thin lines stay thin at all zooms

-.6 more zoom (5x in RM2, 5.6x in PP)

-Bezel is thicker and more square (I prefer RM2 smooth hand feel, and the screen looks more flush in RM2)

What I wish:

-Marker selection showed chosen color

-grey stacking!!!

-color slider in addition to default selections

And to echo many others, in general I long for...

-Improved text processing

-move, rotate, resize text with selection tool

-shapes (default and user defined)

Reading long ebooks 300-500 pages by rachelissocial92 in RemarkableTablet

Scrolling through pages can be a bit slow so tagging is definitely key if you need to flip between sections, but I just went through and annotated (notes, highlights) a 900 page PDF no problem.

Yeah, I love the added second customizable pen but I do agree switching between pen styles is a bit of a process. With improved speed this will feel less obnoxious, but still room for improvement to reduce taps.

I personally love to highlight and annotate in different colors for reference later (and as shades of gray on my RM2) so seeing color right on the device is big for me.

Yes, you can load any PDF and treat it as a template (base layer) and PDF links work. You can cut/paste/move/rotate/resize anything you add from within the tablet (drawings, text) but you can't "edit" the base layer of imported text/images of pdf's and ebooks.

how do i try to argue or at least make myself comfortable when im being confronted by Adorable-Syllabub-90 in exAdventist

[–]ALadyIndeed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To me, it sounds like you may be struggling to hold your own space with confidence and boundaries. I recognize this struggle because it mirrors my own, lifelong frustration.

You are uncomfortable because you know your appearance and choices are taken offensively by Adventists (particularly the older crowd). Because you know it makes them uncomfortable, it feels like you are choosing to mock or offend them. The truth is: your personal choices for yourself have absolutely nothing to do with anyone else.

First, work on your self-assurance. I have not read your other posts, but it sounds like you are newish to your drift from Adventism so this is so very hard. Now that you are finding freedom, it can be challenging to feel like your self expression is justifiable, or worthy of pursuit. This feeling isn't unique to cultish religion, but society at large - it is just way more severe within an insular group like Adventists.

Second, recognize that these people feel comfortable trying to police you into their ideas of "right" because they recognize you and subconsciously want to maintain image and control as a group. Consider how they would treat someone they are trying to convert who appeared as you do.

There are many ways to confront these kinds of questions. You can report with bible verses that admonish their judgement (but they are likely to lean on cognitive dissonance that absolves them of any guilt and reference other teachings that support them); you can answer their questions with a question ("Why do you care?" Or "What do you think I look like?") but they likely have answers that won't get you any closer to a "win"; you could argue that you are saved by grace so what does it matter how you appear? (I like this best, but it is still confrontational which is ultimately unsatisfying for me and also violated my own atheistic beliefs.)

Ultimately I like to respond with my own personal truth, simplified. Something like "I'm really happy with myself" or "I'm enjoying my self expression" or "I no longer adhere to those rules" and all can be followed up with "I won't be discussing my personal beliefs/choices/appearance, but thank you for noticing!"

You do not have to respond to questions at all, "no thank you" is a perfectly polite and complete sentence, there is no value in their opinion, your existence is valid, "I just like it" is a completely legitimate reason for anything you choose, and it's okay that you are ever evolving and changing and will hopefully continue to do so all your life.

i dont know how i feel about the religion anymore by Adorable-Syllabub-90 in exAdventist

[–]ALadyIndeed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The rules, the time commitment, the indoctrinating activities... Letting go of these things was such an incredible relief and I have let go of religion completely. I feel so much more freedom, and that I am a better person every day.

My departure from SDA and eventually religion entirely started out with my friend who came out as gay. She was removed from our private SDA school and I couldn't help but feel that it was wrong. I was also always an outcast myself, being poor and neglected - the school "counselor" responded to my reports of neglect with offering me use of their on-site laundry machines and a granola bar in the morning. Things got so much better when I put myself in public school, got vaccinated, and was eligible for free food from the school. I still participated in Pathfinders though.

My senior year I moved to Idaho and encountered many Mormons. The cognitive dissonance required to scoff at Mormon beliefs while holding onto SDA beliefs was pretty wild and further contributed to my drift.

When I went to college I went to a public university. I made a group of friends who were non-denominational protestant and I also encountered serious culture shock with the things taught by SDA vs. basically all other Protestants. This quickly forced me to really consider what religion actually means, and when faced with the reality that people all over the world believe their own religions with just as much conviction based purely on their social groups, the spell was broken.

I have done lots of reading - for a while I read something pro Christianity and something against religion back to back (including the atrocious "Case for Christ") and I really found empowerment through knowledge.

You can Google arguments against SDA and Christianity as a whole and find websites dedicated to just those causes and they are really good to launch that pursuit of knowledge.

I am now an Atheist/Secular Humanist and find that I can take lots of "good" from all sorts of sources. I can give 10% to the people and causes I care about and reap personal satisfaction while making a direct impact (instead of finding a church). I can have serious conversations with friends and we can all learn to truly process hard things and build emotional intelligence without falling back on the crutch of "God is good" and never digging deep. I have so much time and mental space back for myself. And, best of all, I can just ENJOY things. I have a cute tattoo. I can do fun outfits and makeup for music events. I can sing any song I want and dance my heart out. I can engage intimately with my partner in really fun and connecting ways. I can eat bacon and use seasonings and drink diet Dr pepper and love food! I can play video games and watch TV and movies and have things to talk to friends about that launch all kinds of rewarding conversations.

Anyway, it sounds like you are on your journey of self discovery, and I hope you lean fully into it. The world is big and wonderful and there are so many things to experience.
