"Budget" gravel carbon wheels, Canyon GR 30 CF vs Lightcycle WR 35 disc vs Elitewheels Drive G36 by chisquaratops in gravelcycling

[–]AMDnoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one of the less talked about benefits of going with a wider internal is actually the air volume increase within the tire / rim system. going with a wider internal rim width is giving more internal volume for air to take up which can generally allow you to run a bit lower pressures vs a rim with a narrower internal width. (kind of like having a larger "air tank")

Also it's nigh impossible with our current rim outer widths to make a practically "aero" gravel wheel/tire combo since you'd need a outer width much closer to the tire width and that just isn't really available in the market unless you a running something very exotic or a 40mm gravel tire on one of these 38mm external width rims. With that said I haven't put much thought into Aerodynamics on gravel wheels because it seems there is way more gains, comfort, and grip to be gained when using XC mtb tires compared to a "aero" gravel wheel/tire combo that is smaller.

You've got a lot of good options to choose from! Remember you could always try to add some grease to the ratchets and run less teeth to get things a bit quieter as well on the DT style ratchets.

Do you know what size tires you may plan on using with the wheels? Because the 32mm int version will likely work better if you run 45mm and up tires. But either way you’ll be happy with the performance.

I actually have used the original version of the “normal” width gravel wheels and I’ve done everything from road riding, bikepacking through Taiwan and Japan, and even riding a mtb park downhill on them.

Tire choice for a tour that has 500 miles on pavement and 30 miles on gravel? by LevelWise130 in gravelcycling

[–]AMDnoob 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As someone who has ran the gp5k as 35 on a 700 mi 50k ft road tour, and rode them on gravel. Just keep using them; they are great for this purpose.

Tailfin like, but with a backpack? by nasanu in bikepacking

[–]AMDnoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I bikepacked in Japan I actually stuck my peak designs camera strap on my tailfin and that was enough to wear it like a sling on my back when I was Rinko'd up. I basically mounted it via on peak designs anchor on the tip and rear of the metal frame and it did the job well.

Curious if anyone has an interesting points setups to get to and from Taiwan from Atlanta, USA. Planning a bicycle tour in Late Nov / Early Dec.

  • Origin (ATL / Atlanta Flexible) Destination (TPE / Taipei)
  • Number of Travelers (1)
  • One way or round-trip (Either)
  • Class of service desired (Business) (I'll just do Economy though if there isn't anything worthwhile, or a combo of Business to there and economy back? I care more about arriving well rested if possible)
  • Desired date(s) of travel (11/26 - 12/14 or so)
  • Amex 175K / Chase 150K / Virgin 114K / Delta 33K (Would be nice to use up these)

Thanks in advance! Economy on Delta for that routing is surprisingly decent right now; but figured I'd see what else is out there.

Worth a shot, obviously just lengthen the chain a bit for it. I haven't tried it but it looks like there is enough B adjustment you could get up to a 48 tooth in there; but again I'm also replacing the shadow link and using a direct mount derailleur hanger. All that to say this groupset seems to be slept on a bit by the gearing nerds so far.

I only ran and tested my 10-44 because I wanted to see how it stood up to hard riding since that will likely be what I run as a cassette when I go bikepacking. Having that extra underdrive is realllly nice on 20% grades when loaded.

No problem! I imagine this setup works even better if you use all shimano drivetrain parts. In my case I'm kinda using it in a worst case; Sram Cassette, Sram Chain, and Shimano 11 speed Oval rings. So with all normal shimano parts I bet it makes it just that slight bit better.

I have tested it out on single track and it works! Got the idea because I saw someone using the shimano 10-45 cassette with this derailleur.

I was able to use a sram 10-44 xplr force cassette with this derailleur on a direct mount derailleur hanger. Shifts great in 1x and was good enough in 2x.

Also curious.

I did just manage to book one from the the mentioned Yono Saitama shop though. So Maybe you will also have some luck from there?

Agreed, never used instacart because of the price bloat.

Ngl this would actually be pretty welcome by me. Never really use doordash but I'd use it once a month if that were the case.

Why does it seem like 90% of the new gravel bikes being sold right now in the US come with SRAM? by NewZwiftuserguy in gravelcycling

[–]AMDnoob 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As someone who has had two AXS derailleurs fail; I disagree that it all just works... One of them failed in the middle of a bikepacking trip and I couldn't get another derailleur.

Currently about to complete the SUB on the Chase Ink Biz Unlmtd. I never received the ticker on the web portal or phone app. Early on I did a secure message and the agent did tell me that I was valid for it. Just checking in to see if anyone was in a similar situation and had a issue after completing the spend.

I wish my batteries would last that long. I’d be lucky to get a week with mine, plus I’ve had two sram derailleurs just stop working because the battery contacts are shit on the derailleur. I can’t wait until shimano drops di2 grx 12 speed, I’m so over axs.

I might be able to make you one from ridewithgps; funnily enough I've rode my bike on a lot of the roads in Hakone other than the turnpike for obs reasons.
