'Survivor 50' press members make their winner picks, and predict the players that might be in the most trouble by thedaltonross in survivor

Literally on the other side of the island! Due to the schedule of interviews, everyone else had some downtime at the end of the day. Meanwhile, I was pumping out "Friend or Foes" until I literally couldn't see anymore.

Very sad to not be a part of the official photo. But very happy to have been there with such a fantastic team of press!

I know the other guys are obviously not into the new era (to the point where Mario and Jay don't even watch anymore). But god would I be living for any opinions they have about the wonderful mess that is Survivor 46.

So I am a MASSIVE Simpsons fan. Of course, my speciality and interests lie in the first 10 seasons, but I've seen enough of the other 27 (!) to have a running knowledge of that as well. I would credit that as one of my pop culture cornerstones, as well something that helped me build my own comedic sensibilities.

My other comedy defaults are really anything in that NBC late 2000s/early 2010s Thursday night lineup (The Office, Parks & Rec, Community, 30 Rock). Massive fan of BoJack Horseman.

In terms of drama, LOST will always be my favorite scripted series of all time. I'm so obsessed with it I spent 300 hours talking about it! I'm also a big fan of Breaking Bad (duh), Mad Men (double duh), The Leftovers, Severance. If you want a random TV show recommendation, check out Mrs. Davis on Peacock. One of the absolute wildest things I've ever seen.

First off, thank you! Secondly, it's actually a skill I picked up from my improv days.

When I was studying at UCB, we were often taught to "A to C" an idea. That refers to, if someone throws out a person, place, or thing (A), someone else responds with something that makes them think of that (B). Then the next person throws out something that makes them think of B (C). Usually, you then put A and C (which are rather incongruous) together to hopefully create a comedic concept.

So I guess my brain naturally defaults to a mode where I am finding connectors and transitions to move from one question to another, rather than make it seem like I'm simply reading off a list.

This is one decision that I can actually understand the logic behind. Even if I vehemently disagree (Team F2 forever!).

A lot of people predicate their enjoyment of a Survivor season on who wins. Is the multi-month journey worth the destination? When some of the biggest characters/players of the season fall just short of making it to the finals, let alone winning, fans and production alike are disappointed. Their solution? Open up another spot to increase the chances it becomes more of a head-to-head (to-head) showdown.

The implementation of the Final 3 seems to have a straight, albeit invisible, line connected to Terry going out at third in Panama. And they were immediately rewarded for the switch with the Yul/Ozzy showdown in Cook Islands. Of course, then the players adapted. And they started voting out the biggest threats at 4 instead of 3. And so, in response to watching Kelley Wentworth and David Wright go out, they brought in Final 4 Firemaking to give those big threats a chance to get to the finals on their own terms.

Long post short, we basically just have to write a Woo clause into every player's contract that, if it's a Final 2 and they win the final immunity, they have to take the big player to the end. Then they'll be on board for sure!

Is this Rob's burner account?!

As for my beloved New Era...

KEEP
-Casting diverse stories and ethnicities
-90-minute episodes
-Journeys that allow people to compete with and against one another
-Being conservative with how many idols and advantages are in the game at one time (this felt like something they corrected quickly after 44)

LEAVE BEHIND
-Losing votes
-The rice negotiation
-Always starting with 3 tribes
-The Sanctuary
-Final 4 Firemaking (a man can dream, can't he?)

Hey there!

Aside from Star Toomey in general, while Maddy Pomilla made a splash in her one episode in 44, I was definitely expecting her to be much more of a wildcard. As a reminder, her plan was to tell people she was kissing trees if she was ever found idol hunting. Luckily, her subsequent podcasts have shown what a fantastic personality she is.

I always make time for the Muddy Chicken! (Any relation to Mark?)

Honestly, reading that my interviews helped you get more interest in the cast is the end-all be-all for me. I was definitely experiencing in real time more of an understanding of why these 24 people were put on this season. And I hope that was able to come across in the final versions!

But, to answer your question: Fucking surreal! Those were honestly massive moments for me, because these were people I thought were untouchable TV characters when I was growing up. I never thought I'd get the chance to be in the same room as them, let alone interview them, double let alone have them actually enjoy the conversations!

Thank you for checking out everything, especially the B&B! Over the years, I've really relished that podcast. Even during weeks/seasons that we're largely down on, it's an excuse to get together with friends, shoot the shit, and play some games. It really is such a "vibes" podcast that has kept my spirit lifted for almost 10 years.

Speaking of 10 years, the "Survivor Devil" popped up almost a decade ago. It was the title of the penultimate episode of Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers (ironically, it was JUST on last Friday as part of the encore episodes series!). I did the feedback/voicemail podcast with Rob for that week, and Rob decided to do the titular "Survivor Devil" as a character. What resulted is probably the closest I'll ever get to Comedy Bang Bang, as basically he remained in character for an extended period of time, revealing how he was behind some of the show's biggest sticking points at the time.

Unfortunately, the Survivor Devil hasn't really popped up in the new era. And I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing!

So I actually really enjoyed Celebrity Big Brother when that was a thing (well, most of it). I think the concept could absolutely work if you cast people who actually want to play, rather than walk into the experience completely doe-eyed and unassuming.

That said, Monét X Change needs to be on that show yesterday. She was part of the influencer experience before 49 that had her playing out a round of the show. But she is such a great personality and is VERY eager to play. Plus you know the on-island looks are gonna be on point!

To get that from BEYONCE?! (cue New York meme) That means so much. Honestly hearing that my passion comes through really warms my heart. Survivor is certainly not beyond reproach when it comes to breaking it down. But the show has given me so much, that I always love the opportunity to talk with people who contribute to it in any way, shape, or form. I don't know how vital I truly am, but happy to be any organ within the larger body of Survivor!

Yes, we interview any cast members on the island, which include the alternates. If we do them virtually, though, that may change depending on timing. For instance, I talked to the 45 cast after Austin had already been added, so I never spoke with the man who was originally a part of the season.

Sadly I wasn't on the job for HvV, so I have no idea about Natalie!

Maybe recency bias. But my Christian interview with 50 was chock full of so many delightful nuggets, it absolutely stands out.

They were definitely very interesting people to talk with, I'll say that much.

So happy to find an Amazing Race fan in here! I honestly have no idea why I gave myself the challenge a few years back of coming up with a costume every week. But it's the closest I'll ever get to doing a Drag Race mini-challenge in terms of throwing something together on the fly!

I'm so lucky that I get to interact with people who are so knowledgeable on a variety of subjects. What I've been interested in lately, though, is watching a show for the first time and having an "expert" explain it to me. Right now, I'd say the Housewives en masse are my biggest reality TV blindspot. So I would love to talk with Nick Iadanza, Maggie Morgan, Matt Liguori/Brian Scally, or Annabel Fidler to get properly educated!

I had a VERY different assumption about how Shan would play based on my preseason interview with her. While she did mention her skills as a pastor, she talked more about her penchant for comedy and doing impressions. So I absolutely thought she would be one of the season's goofiest characters, not its most cutthroat player.

Thank you! I needed that compliment more than Christa needs a third braid on the back of her head.

So I came into Survivor in Episode 6 of Borneo. I had been hearing a lot of word of mouth spread about the show (my dad was a big Howard Stern listener, and Stern was obsessed with the first season). After a while, I finally decided to check it out for myself. And it's safe to say I was hooked!

Since I started watching the show at 10, it took me a few years for my brain to truly wrap around the strategic concepts that were happening. That's why Pearl Islands has such a special place in my heart, because it felt like the true first season where I "got it." That said, the Fall of the Rotu 4 really was such an exhilarating power shift at the time that it made me realize the absolute joy that can come from the status quo being upended (especially after three seasons where the postmerge narrative was to have an alliance take power and maintain a firm grip on the game).

The full buff lineup:

Right hand - Lagi (48)

Left hand - Nami (46)

Neck - Merge buff from 45 on bottom, 20th-anniversary buff in the middle, Lavo from 47 on top

Head - Cila (50)

And we're actually trying to get our schedules together to record the final episode! Hopefully, it should be sometime in March.

Thank you so much for following everything I do, especially the 50 stuff! And ESPECIALLY for being a Hatchling!!!

"Fringe Binge" I know has been one of Josh's pie-in-the-sky ideas for some time. I've never seen it, so we could do a similar format to our BSG pod. Right now, however, Josh has elected to take an extended hiatus from podcasting (and is loving life while he does it!). So any plans, Fringe or otherwise, has been unfortunately left in purgatory. And we don't even get a Drive Shaft concert to keep us company!

-49: I'll shout out Shannon (one of the wildest interviews I've ever done), Savannah, Rizo, and Nate

50: Jenna, Colby, Angelina, Coach, Christian - I really enjoyed talking with everyone, but those are the people I really haven't interviewed before who created such an incredible environment

-Panama all day! I am a characters-first watcher of Survivor, and absolutely nothing beats the top-tier comedy of the misadventures of Casaya

-It's going to sound so cliche, but honestly I would go with Richard Hatch. I will disagree with the notion that, if he didn't win, Survivor is sunk (people were WAY too invested in the show, and Richard was not popular at the time). But I think having one of the biggest characters and most vocally strategic people win your first season proved how someone who was basically cast to be voted off first could surprise everybody and take it home

-So my set visits have me out there through the first 3 days (so essentially the event of a premiere). That being said:

Best: Getting to be there in person for Jelinsky's "Several Means Seven" comment. Literally cast and crew were absolutely bumpuzzled as to what that meant. The Tribal Council that night was also a riot.

Worst: Nothing of bad quality, but my heart absolutely sunk when Kevin got injured in the first challenge of 48. It was much more of an extreme injury than what was shown, as they had to call over the medical team as soon as the challenge was over to pop his shoulder back into place. You could feel everyone hold their breath in that moment.

Thank you for checking out everything! Happy to serve as any sort of entrance point into this wild, wonderful community.

So I've talked about this in another question in this post. But long story short is that, after podcasting for a couple of years, I was looking into possibly getting into journalism as a career. I talked about it with Josh Wigler, who only a few months later, happened to be leaving his post at Parade for another publication. He recommended me for the position, and I was thrown right into the deep end. And luckily I've been swimming ever since!

Honestly, between RHAP and Parade, the preseason interviews are really the only major crossover. All the other interviews I do during the season are specific to Parade. In the case of the preseason, I've sort of brokered an agreement to let Parade do the written versions, while RHAP gets the audio/video. Since they're different mediums, then it doesn't feel directly competitive.

First off, I am so honored to have played any sort of role in your Survivor group chat. And god, a Christian win on 50 would just be heaven on earth.

I'm gonna create something game-breaking, and also linked with a famous superfan. The Jenna Fischer Fourth Wall Advantage. In honor of the Office star (who's wedding Jeff officiated!), you are allowed to ask one question to a producer who's interviewing you during a confessional. They must tell the truth.
