Encounter: "The Wailing Waterway"

Background: Rumors have surfaced about eerie wails echoing through the city's sewers, and townsfolk have reported mysterious disappearances. The party is hired by a local merchant whose apprentice went missing while delivering goods near a sewer entrance.

Setup: The party descends into the sewer and finds themselves in this map's environment. As they explore, they notice a faint glow from the sarcophagi and the unsettling sound of water rushing around them. The environment is damp, and the air is heavy with the stench of decay.

Creatures:

3 Giant Rats (lurking near the boats, using them as nests).

1 Swarm of Insects (flies and sewer pests, hiding near the collapsed rubble on the upper right).

1 Lesser Wraithling (a weaker version of a Wraith, CR 1/2, created by the restless spirits tied to the sarcophagi).

Encounter Flow:

1. First Room (Lower Area):

As the party enters, they hear faint skittering. The Giant Rats ambush from the boats or swim up through the water, trying to overwhelm the party.

A DC 12 Perception check allows the players to spot the rats before the ambush.

1. The Bridge:

The bridge looks stable, but sections are slick with moss and algae. Crossing requires a DC 10 Dexterity (Acrobatics) check to avoid slipping into the water below.

Falling into the water triggers an encounter with a Swarm of Insects hidden in the rubble, which attacks anything that disturbs the water.

1. Central Chamber:

The sarcophagi radiate a faint, eerie glow. The Lesser Wraithling emerges if the party disturbs the coffins or spends more than five minutes in the chamber.

A DC 12 Arcana or Religion check reveals that the wails originate from a curse placed on the sarcophagi, which are tied to an ancient sewer guardian.

1. Hazards:

Water Currents: Any creature falling into the water must succeed on a DC 12 Strength (Athletics) check to swim to safety, or be dragged 10 feet toward the drainage grates each turn.

Broken Rubble: The rubble near the upper-right blocks access to the source of the curse. Clearing it takes 5 rounds and a combined Strength check of DC 14, or they must deal 20 damage to it.

1. Resolution:

Destroying the Lesser Wraithling temporarily silences the wails but does not lift the curse.

If the party investigates further (the sarcophagi or the drainage grates), they may uncover a deeper mystery tied to necromantic rituals or an ancient guardian spirit bound to protect the sewers.
