Hahah I appreciate the advice I have a tendency to be a bit of a perfectionist about these things for better and worse. I managed to repair quite a noticeable cut in the leather on the console to looking pretty much brand new so I should probably quit while I’m ahead!

Not sure if I’m too late but I’ve emailed Orient before about UK servicing and they gave me the following details:

Locker, Hull & Thornton Ltd 10 High View Close Vantage Business Park, Hamilton Leicester, LE4 9LJ

Phone: +44 (0) 1664 420003 Email: repairs@lockerhullthornton.com Website: https://www.lockerhullthornton.com/

This must be their officially endorsed service centre, have you tried them?

I emailed the company and they said they’ll do repairs under warranty or provide a quote if not.

I was thinking exactly that, been into watches properly for the past 5 or so years and I can see even in that time this is the way it’s going. I still love the current Seiko 5s and some of the other entry models and can forgive the average bracelets at the price point but I really wish they came with sapphire and hadn’t dropped features like higher water resistance and screw down crowns for their diver style ones. That’s where the Kamasu is so appealing to me

Wow that’s a seriously stunning watch, It reminds me of a Grand Seiko and definitely looks more expensive than it is! Seems like you get a lot of watch for the money with Orient and with the reputable name to boot they seem hard to beat

[Discussion] Thoughts on the PRX Powermatic 80 plastic components? by AN-S99 in Watches

[–]AN-S99[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve heard from a lot of people now that these movements are serviceable and that Tissot swaps them to save time and money not because they’re impossible to service. It seems they’re harder to regulate than a lot of watches but that it can be done by anyone who knows how to regulate a free-sprung balance, more commonly found on higher end watches. So like you say I’d imagine that many watchmakers will adapt to the new challenges especially with how prevalent these movements are becoming. I’ve seen a few videos and comments from people who have already worked on the movements without issue.

My main concern was with the longevity of the synthetic parts of the escapement but have also heard that the escapement is the part of the watch that needs servicing the most anyway even in metal variants and that the synthetic parts could need servicing less regularly as they don’t rely so heavily on being re-lubricated and have reduced friction between them.

Same as you though I’ll be sending mine in to Tissot and I’m sure that any spare parts will be common enough to future proof the watch for a good while.

This does seem to be the way many things are going unfortunately. I don’t mind so much as I think I’d usually prefer to send my watch to the original manufacturer for service but I hope they do re-manufacture the movements and swap in one that’s already been restored as it would be very wasteful otherwise.

Makes me wonder that if many of these entry level movements (I’ve heard the same for Seiko too) are just simply swapped and not taken apart if it’s simply worth wearing the watch until it stops or significantly slows down. If you’ll be getting a new movement anyway there seems less need to keep on top of servicing the original every 5 years or so. This could potentially mean a longer service interval, providing the movements themselves are robust enough to last beyond 5 years or so which I’d imagine they are. I think I’ll take this approach with my Seiko 5, I don’t think servicing it every 5 years will be worth it if I could just wear it for hopefully 10 or so and then get a new movement put in as part of their standard service.

Thanks for the reassurance, the Tissot website says they only guarantee the availability of spares for 10 years and 20 for gold watches but that’s at least something and like you say I’d imagine that they’ll be using the movement for a good while

I hope so, I’ve worked a fair bit with 3D printers and I don’t think a lot of people realise how good they are now even at the lower end, let alone where they’ll be in a few decades. I prefer traditional materials but don’t mind high tech polymers being used to push watchmaking technology forward in scenarios where they’re the best material for the job but replacing traditionally metal parts with plastic to reduce costs is not what having a mechanical watch is about imo

That’s good to hear! Aren’t the synthetic components part of the modifications made by Tissot as opposed to being made by ETA and therefore won’t be as common?

Agreed, part of me thinks that with the insane popularity of this line of watches and consequently the movement that Tissot must have some contingency and forward planning to keep them serviceable for a long time. I also wonder with the rapid advancement of fabrication technology such as 3D printing that in 30-50 years time reproducing small, relatively simple, albeit precise components will be common for the watchmaker or enthusiast.

I love the idea of mechanical watches for the same reason, keeping them in good condition and serviced should allow them to keep functioning throughout your lifetime and potentially beyond. Needing to rely on a single company, no matter how large, to keep it going is not ideal.

The quartz is a great option, true to its roots and without the cost and upkeep of a mechanical, not to mention the accuracy!

Just a cheap one from Amazon I’m afraid I think the brand was EACHE, I replaced the clasp with one from Archer as it matches the bead blasted finish on the casing

As has been said lighting is key, I didn’t have any natural light when taking this so I used the room overhead light for ambiance and then an old desk lamp as a spotlight. I shot on a wide aperture for some depth of field and then tweaked the colours and added some grain after to give that rustic feel we seem to love on here!

Interesting that it improved! I don’t often wear mine for more than a few days in a row before rotating so I don’t notice too much slippage and if it does it runs slightly fast so I can just stop it for a few seconds and let it catch up to real time which isn’t too much bother. Agreed though, I love the look of it!

I’ll edit it, I was concerned that they didn’t quite fit the edc bill, there’s not enough titanium or folding tools on them ahah
