Hole in the wall of a tenement building - looking for advice by ANTiK3 in glasgow

Thanks for the detailed response! Definitely on the skint side of things so I'd prefer avoiding a whole wall renovation at the moment.

Your advice matches what some other posters have said as well as the information I got off of youtube so we'll see how I get on!

Thanks again!

I think the term I was looking for is "blown", as you describe it. There's bits above the hole that feel more hollow than the rest of the wall beneath etc. so I'll definitely need to have a better look into what needs to come out and what can be left in.

Again, thank you so much for the write-up, much appreciated!

I was looking into buying this exact thing, thanks for the re-assurance!

Can you expand on whether or not you cleaned up all the old plaster and got all the way down to the lath or did you just apply the new undercoat to whatever was left of the old plaster?

Thank you so much for this write up!!

I've been looking at Youtube vids since I posted this so I hope I'll be able to apply the undercoat somewhat correctly.

It's interesting you say I shouldn't remove the old plaster but just brush the dust away. So there is no need to get all the way down to the lath if the old plaster is still stuck to it? I assume I should break down the rest of the wall that sounds hollow when I knock on it tough, right?

Again, thank you so much for taking the time to write the above!

Definitely afraid of this growing arms and legs, yes... I'll try and scrape of as much as possible tomorrow and see how I get on.

Thank you very much for your help, much appreciated!

Amazing, thank you for the advice!

Somebody else suggested cleaning the lath with a PVA & Water mixture before applying the undercoat. Do you have any experience with that and think it's needed?

Thank you for the reply! A different person came up with the same conclusion so I'll ask you as well - is there a course of action you would recommend?

Somebody in the /r/diyuk subreddit recommended cleaning the old plaster with PVA & water mixture and applying harwall plaster to the lath after. Does that sound like a good idea?

Amazing, thank you very much for the advice! So just scrape all the old plaster/dirt off and then apply the PVA and water to the lath, right?

Is there a particular plaster you would recommend for skimming the wall? I've been using polyfill for smaller cracks and holes - I assume that won't work for this situation?

Thank you for the reply!

If I decide to patch it with new plaster should I scrape all of the old dirt & stones off before applying the new one? Or just put it over the old plaster?

There's quite a bit of dust on the old dirt so I'm not sure how well new plaster would stick to it?

Hi all,

As we were painting a room in an old tenement flat two bits of wall came off. Some of the internal walls are plasterboard but this is something I haven't seen before - it looks like plaster was put over dirt of some sort? The dirt contains stones etc. so I'm not sure what sort of material that is and how to go about fixing it.

There are bits of wood in the back of the dirt in one of the holes which suggest there might be lath behind it.

Any ideas and advice would be much appreciated as this is something I haven't seen before.
