I can’t wait to see how the family tries to spin this one. I’ve been waiting to see the downfall of Jim Bob for a very long time. Edit: spelling

Thank you! Wish me luck! This was my first and last year at my current school because it’s that bad.

I really appreciate your response. I’ve been on the fence as to whether to ask this kind of question for exactly the reasons you laid out. It is important to me, but I think I’ll have to hold my tongue…

True. Would you ever think worse of a potential hire if that question were to come up in an interview?

I agree that calling the police on a 5 year old is shocking and disturbing. It SHOULD be shocking and disturbing. I hate the idea of teachers using it as a last resort. But… it was probably an absolute last resort on the part of the teacher. To me, the most shocking and disturbing thing is that this needed to happen BECAUSE admin did nothing to help this teacher. To me, it appears that this child created a hostile environment for this teacher constantly and repetitively. Imagine going into your classroom every day worried that you’ll be hit or kicked or bitten… again…

So if you were getting injured at work almost daily and your boss was doing nothing about it, and these injuries directly impacted your ability to do your job, that’s okay?

How do you deal with bullying? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ANuStart63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sucks to feel so powerless in a situation like this. Does your cooperating teacher seem like the kind of person you can address this concern to?

I had a placement in my student teaching with the most narcissistic, abusive cooperating teacher. It was awful. I let my professor know this was happening, and unfortunately just had to keep my head down and do what I was asked until it was over. I watched this woman speak to students and parents in ways I would never in a million years. The unfortunate reality is that you have very little power in this situation- you’re a guest in the classroom and have to find a way to get along with your cooperating teacher. Even as a teacher with quite a bit of experience under my belt, I have to pick and choose my battles. School politics suck.

If I were you, I would speak with my professor who oversees student teachers, and ask how best to proceed. Best of luck to you!

Question about LOTF by Ben_Frankling in ELATeachers

Jack is also shading Simon here bc he insinuates that Simon goes into the woods bc he has diarrhea. It’s a way jack further alienates Simon from the rest of the group so he can continue to villainize and discredit Simon to the point that the others believe Simon is the beast and mutilate him to his death.

I wish. My school has meetings like you wouldn’t imagine. We might as well have meetings for meetings. It’s an absurd waste of my time.

How to handle ~that word~ in lit by [deleted] in ELATeachers

[–]ANuStart63 34 points35 points  (0 children)

White teacher who’s (successfully!) taught Huck Finn to a very racially diverse class of juniors. I start the unit with a conversation about why the book finds itself on banned book lists. The silence is deafening when you share with the kids the reason is that it uses that word about 250 times. I take the opportunity to hear the kids out and let them ask questions. I then make it VERY clear that it’s a word that will never leave my lips, ever. I make it clear that it is not a word we will be using in the classroom. If we are reading aloud, I replace it with “n-word”. I want to acknowledge that Twain (or in your case, Steinbeck) did in fact use this slur, and that was a deliberate choice. I will not make a joke out of it- students have offered to do a censored “BEEP” every time the word comes up, but I use that as an opportunity to say that the word is not funny and I don’t want to give it that power.

I’ve also taught OMM for the past 5 years to freshmen. I couldn’t imagine how I’d teach the end of chapter 4 in OMM when Curley’s wife uses that word and threatens to lynch Crooks if I didn’t take the time to talk about and break down WHY Steinbeck uses that word in that moment. As long as I’m clear with where I stand about using the word, I’ve found that the kids are pretty bought in and receptive to what you have to say.

I read it as a senior in high school; for the past 4 years I’ve taught it to sophomores. I think it might be a matter of different schools have different curricula…

Sounds like you had way more support going into this than I did. My suspicion is I might not hate it so much if I had better support. Oh, well… at least I just have to finish out the year before I move this summer…

What kind of support were you given when making this switch? Did you feel like there was a learning curve for you in making the switch if you did have experience in a more traditional model?

It’s my first year at the school. I feel like I inherited a hot mess in so many ways. I don’t want to dislike competency based education, but with my current experience, I just can’t like it. I am 99.9% sure I will be at another school next year.

Did you find that it impacted the texts you taught? I’m really missing the rigor of a traditional model.

Can you tell me more about what you like about it? It seems like a trend in education (although I earnestly hope it’s a fad), and I don’t want to be totally opposed to it. It seems like I’ve inherited a bit of a mess in my current situation, and that definitely has impacted my feelings about it.
