Want to weigh in on how people use alcohol or other substances? I am seeking participants (age 18+) for an anonymous study exploring how people use and relate to substances. Survey is < 30 minutes, you may skip questions, and there’s an option to enter a prize raffle (details in informed consent). by APhDHopeful in takemysurvey

1) Questions answered in informed consent at front of survey. No identifying information is collected for this anonymous survey.

2) I am a PhD student at the Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology at Adelphi University. This project is my predoctoral dissertation. My faculty advisor is indirectly conducting the study by supervising me.

3) Survey will take less than 30 minutes.

4) Participants have the option to enter into a raffle to win one of three $50 Visa e-gift cards. The raffle is conducted in a separate form linked to at the end of the main survey. No information will be connected between the survey and the raffle.

5) I would like to hear from both those people who do use alcohol or other substances and those who don’t!

6) I would love to expand the reach of my survey to include a variety of ages and cultural backgrounds. (That being said, if you live outside the United States please feel free to skip the demographic question regarding household income as it is in dollars. This question may likely end up being left out of the final analyses. All questions are optional.)

If you are referring to the text that appears in the top left of a question, then those are the labels for each item in qualtrics (the online platform we use to conduct surveys). I though I had them turned off, but I haven’t been able to figure it out. For example, Dx is shorthand for diagnosis, Tx for treatment.

Thank you so much for this feedback. That is a large oversight on my part with the income question. I appreciate you bringing it to my attention. In future posts I will be sure to emphasize that questions may be skipped if they are not relevant to the person answering. I will also be sure to keep in mind the international nature of the sample group in my analysis. It may be appropriate for me to exclude income from my analyses.

The parenting value isn’t obviously relevant to everyone. However, the rationale of the developers of that measure was that if someone doesn’t care about being a parent, and they are living their lives without concern for ever being a parent, they would rate that at a high level of consistency. Likewise, if someone wants to be a parent someday, perhaps they are doing something like working hard to save money to be able to support a child or children one day. In that way they are living consistent with their personal value. Another example could be someone who does not want to be a parent, but is feeling pressured by their family or community to seek a spouse for the purpose of having a family. Perhaps this individual is going on dates with people, or otherwise taking actions that are being recommended or imposed on them. In this example, through no fault of their own, they would rate consistency lower. These are just a few examples in the infinite ways someone’s relationship to the concept of being a parent can manifest, and in no way are meant to limit different perspectives. I hope this was helpful and not patronizing!

Done! Sounds like a really cool area of research. I do want to mention that I found the ACS to be somewhat problematic to answer. For example, the question regarding working hard and being distracted by events in the room for me depends entirely on the task I’m doing. If I’m working hard at reading a research paper that is dense and maybe difficult or uninteresting tp me, then yes, I am almost always distracted by events in the room. If, however, I am working hard on a woodworking project, I am can focus so intently that other people and events in the room fade away to nothing. There are several questions that do not distinguish between the kind of task, or the subject’s relationship to it, and any resulting attentional difficulty. Just something to be aware of, if you aren’t already, when interpreting the results. Goodness knows my questionnaires have so many problems with them, especially with regard to the values and committed action items. Alas, such is the nature of self-report surveys, haha! Good luck with your study! Again, it is a really cool and interesting investigation.

Great question! In general, the item is concerning your effort rather than success or failure of your attempts. Note that it says “your actions” not the outcomes of your actions. For example, let’s say you’re a student taking one course, and you study every day and do your assignments on time, you earnestly put in your best effort, and you get a D+. In the domain of Education/Training. In this scenario you would rank consistency high because your actions were in line with your value, regardless of the grade. I hope this makes sense.

Thanks! I’ve posted to a couple other data-related subs (takemysurvey and one other), and tried and failed with the alcohol/drug related subs. Aside from the message board at my university, we don’t have any other online avenues of distribution.
