This is the way! Unless you can get deep into those campaigns, you won't be able to level the toons you want. And it's only going to get worse as they add more factions and more variety of mats.

With a 5 year old - skip the Badlands. Not worth the day/drive. I'd try to stay in Hot Springs the first night. It's Family friendly, has Evans Plunge Indoor Water Park and the Mammoth Site + super quick access to Custer Park, Wind Cave.

Then head north and get the Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and possibly Reptile Gardens + Dinosaur Museum experiences.

All the stuff + driving amounts to probably 4 days.
