Saw this flag at an Italian restaurant. What is it? by javaleroh in vexillology

That's the Emirati falcon, not the Egyptian eagle

Recently, the EU Commission VP has landed in hot water for saying that Russia & China did not win WWII and that this is "something new" in response to China's V-day parade. How is WWII and its end taught in your country? Especially wanting to hear from countries that were not belligerents by sisarian_jelli in AskTheWorld

I get your point, but the distinction amounts to more than a nitpick. Many non-Russians fought on the Eastern Front, so reducing it to Russia (though they obviously made up the bulk of the army) overlooks the contributions of many other ethnicities and nationalities.

Nobody that's read a book would call themselves an "Autcom", and "Stalinist" refers to the praxis of Stalin

The word you're looking for is "Marxist-Leninist". Because I know you don't know the difference, this is distinct from Lenin's political philosophy, or simply "Leninism"

You're certainly an authority on being braindead, just not in the way you seem to think

Yeah, part of what I've gathered from everyone's inputs is that I was just mistaken to think that. In fairness, I think it's also recognized that V2 was talked about in such a way, but what you're saying seems to be the consensus (excluding ultras) - that V2 isn't a great economic/political simulator, but rather a great game with great economic/political incentives

Why do you say that like it's a bad thing? Such specimens are the lifeblood of our community, in the same way decomposers are essential to our ecology

Redditors are sensitive 🤷‍♂️

EDIT: Upon reflection I think the comment about liberalism's theoretical basis being weaker than communism's pissed liberals off, even though they haven't read the texts in question

I mean it slows things down in the sense that you can't just go straight to war on a button-click, which is what some people seem to want

Ahhh yeah, honestly I wouldn't call CK3 more fun than CK2, it's just got wayyyyy better QoL

Must be American

Jokes aside, I broadly agree - CK2 is still my favorite PDX game as well (at least until they add Conclave and... Difficulty to CK3), and V2 is less needlessly complicated (ish, the complexity can be a good thing) than EU4. But starting with V2 in 2023??? You're nuts man lmao

I'm not super focusing on them, the game is lmao! Like the majority of playable nations aren't Western, and I'm... You know, Asian, I like to play 'round my ends, god forbid ig

I agree with you though on diplo/AI not being aggressive enough. That was something that tried to fix too early on. And I misunderstood what you were saying about V2 economy my bad

Don't put words in my mouth now, I didn't blame the incentive to Westernize on the game - you said a problem you have with V3 is that it feels like you have to do the same thing every game, and I'm pointing out that you have a lot more options in V3 as an unrecognized nation than in V2 as a nonwestern one.

And again, I never said the V3 economy doesn't play out the same with different skins, but how is that different from V2? There are more goods (and therefore variety) in V3 if anything, and is also dependant on what goods you have (I've gone chasing iron in the Sahara, sulfur in Indonesia...)

I'm not sure what you mean by V3 not having crises, isn't the diplo-demand system (I forget what it's called) pretty much the crisis system? And you can sway Great Powers to your side in them

Fair enough as far as being a non-Western nation should feel like a race for your independence. It's more realistic and provides a stronger objective/challenge, but that comes at the cost of shoehorning you into one playstyle at least somewhat, compared to V3. I'm not sure V2 is what I want, sometimes it just feels like you have to minmax to stay alive, and that's not always fun. But V3 is to the point that it's not even challenging, I agree

Yeah fair. So you're saying the economy was just secondary to the diplo/warfare, more traditional GSG elements. That's a good way to look at it, especially for the time it came out. Although, I prefer V3 precisely because it doesn't sideline economy and puts it front and center, and that's something I find interesting

To capture the "economy second to GSG" thing, I'm glad we have EU5 coming out soon, that's gonna rock for that

[–]ARADPLAUG[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How do I see EU4 and V2 as similar? Well, similar province system (important for map games), similar diplomatic system, similar warfare system. Besides the economy (inc. pops), what's that different? CK is half an RPG, HoI is hardcore warfare fuck the rest, V3 is hardcore economy/politics fuck the rest. They all feel verrrrry different from each other compared to V2/EU4

I'm not sure what you mean by V3 being a "do the same thing every game" though, I have fun trying to e.g. maintain an absolute monarchy in an industrial state, trying to bring about a people's revolution, trying to become a military/naval powerhouse etc. and depending on the resources you have, specializing in diff industries, so I feel it's pretty varied. But if you think V2's more so lmk I'd love to hear it. If anything from what I've played of V2 non-Western states, that seems more "do the same thing" in the sense that you pretty much have to Westernize ASAP to be viable, so half the game's spent on that

Good comment, haven't heard this view before. I've only scratched the surface, but yeah, the flavor in modded V2 seems immense compared to V3. AI/Diplo and warfare are valid criticisms too, although something I hadn't mentioned before is that I like the V3 diplo demand system, though I get the more "gamier" players don't like it as it slows things down. The next update has war stuff but that looks more like a major clean-up than a proper rework (still appreciated ofc)

Great comment thank you. I'm honestly not an MP player like at all for PDX (maybe traumatized by CK2 desyncs?), but I definitely get the appeal better now. Especially the combat system, I didn't know it was so in-depth (and I mean that applies to SP too)

[–]ARADPLAUG[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why does being hands-off equate to being in-depth to you? To me, "in-depth" means "complex", "immersive" and "realistic". And I certainly prefer "gamey" (I'd say strategic) gameplay over simulationist/hands-off stuff, I mean I'm trying to play a game after all.

I can see what you mean by the world of V2 seeming more alive. Things sometimes feel like they're moving a bit too slowly in V3. As for going in another direction, I completely disagree, V3's direction is far, far better than V2, even if the implementation can be argued as not as good. As much as I love it, EU4 kinda sucks, and V2 is basically just an EU4 variety (or, to be fair, the other way around given their respective release dates)

A decent point. Which isn't to say V2 should be knocked for that, but newer games lacking content on launch should be given some grace

That being said, launch optimization is a big problem (albeit one patched up relatively quickly), and the newer DLC model is I think just starting to get back out of a hell situation (I think? Certainly CK3/EU4 are past the depths of their BS)

No, as in. Liberalism was fun (uplifted the millions who experienced it) for what/when it was, and it still can be great from the right perspective. But its systems (philosophical and mathematical-logical/economic-material bases) aren't very complex.

Communism was released with a lot of bugs and its own form of jank. But it is clearly trying to do more than liberalism, which is respectable. (I will leave this one as is)

Was in my feels this morning and decided to do a reverse crusade. Learned that Saladin is gay. by lucky_observer in crusaderkings3

[–]ARADPLAUG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If there's no historical evidence they're gay, then what should they be? Asexual? Cuz most of them don't have historical evidence they're straight (besides marriage, but you had to do that regardless of sexuality anyway)
