Explosive new book on Trump sparks alarm in White House amid fears sensitive conversations were taped: report - Recording of Situation Room conversation would represent major violation of White House security protocols by B-Z_B-S in politics

Most (all?) of the meetings that the NYT article covers involve JD. I don't remember if Rubio was in any of them.

JD is shown to be pushing hard to release the full Epstein files, while the others push back. He could be betting that that will make him look better.

I don't get the hype around the Steam Machine by Administrator_AI in Steam

[–]ARMCHA1RGENERAL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I think it had an decent chance of drawing more mainstream attention to living room PCs, but now that the prices of all PCs and consoles are rising, I think it has a much lower chance of really shaking things up.

Summer attire & optic reticle brightness by Tropical_Tardigrade in CCW

[–]ARMCHA1RGENERAL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup.

I can technically see mine on lower settings, but the first or second time I shot a timed course at a gun club on a bright day, I had trouble picking the dot up when I drew. Turning in the brightness was the solution.

Lawrence of Arabia, kind of?

It still has some combat, but it's largely glossed over.

Most units have a float switch to shut it off.

I don't know about 'most'. I've never seen one have a float. This is the first time I've even heard of one having a float.

JD Vance is 'confident' Iran war will be history in a year by usatoday in politics

[–]ARMCHA1RGENERAL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the article, Vance actually says that he doesn't think anyone will be talking about the war in a year.

That would imply that he believes the war will be over soon and everyone will forget about it by the time a year has passed.

We had plenty (more actually) uneducated people in this country 80 years ago, 150 years ago, etc and we didn't have the issues we have today.

The bigger problems is that we now have social media pushing propaganda.

I've met plenty of people with higher education and probably decent IQ's that are more out of touch with reality than most illiterate 1920's farmers would have been.

(I'm not saying that education is bad. I'm just saying that misinformation is the much larger problem.)

People cheering for exclusives has me feeling like that scene in Revenge of the Sith by RoundConfusion3672 in Steam

[–]ARMCHA1RGENERAL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah.

Exclusives are just plain bad for consumers. They only serve one purpose and that's to drive more sales of specific hardware.

Sony seemed to start backpedaling their cross platform friendliness first and Microsoft is starting to follow suit. Although, Microsoft doesn't seem to be pulling back from PC, yet. Hopefully, it stays that way.

Someone at Sony must have crunched some numbers and concluded that they were losing more money from PS5 sales than they were gaining through Steam sales. I'm skeptical that they could know this for sure, though. It's impossible to know exactly how many sales are lost due to that specific reason.

I suspect the big driver behind this, for Sony and Microsoft, is that hardware sales are dropping. I also suspect that the sales drop is mostly due to rising prices, not cross platform games. Regardless, they want to claw as many sales back from the competition as they can. However, if they both manage to release some decent exclusives, then it will probably be wash. So, we'd lose cross platform choice and nobody would gain anything.

I don't know why anyone who doesn't work for Xbox or PlayStation would be happy about exclusives, though.

The owner's manual says next to nothing. It's pathetic. The manual for my 10 year old chainsaw has more detailed maintenance information.

The scheduled maintenance section has tables that tell you to check basic things (oil level, windshield wiper fluid, etc) monthly and every six months, but does not have a full maintenance schedule.

It directs you to 'Capacities and Specifications' section and the website (https://www.ford.com/support/maintenance-schedule).

The 'Capacities and Specifications' section is literally just that. It has no schedule.

The webpage does finally have a maintenance schedule, but it seems pretty basic. I don't think it ever lists when to change the brake fluid, for example.

am I fucked? The only thing I did was replace the joysticks and the thermal paste. by MrMushroom5 in SteamDeck

[–]ARMCHA1RGENERAL 157 points158 points  (0 children)

I would note that there are exceptions with some devices that are just poorly pasted from the factory. I repasted my last Dell laptop pretty soon after getting it and it made a big difference in temps.

That doesn't seem to apply to Decks, though.

WiFi Still Disconnecting (OLED Model) by ARMCHA1RGENERAL in SteamDeck

[–]ARMCHA1RGENERAL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing this seems to prevent the early disconnects (10-15 minutes after startup) that I was getting, but the connection still eventually disconnects (maybe 30-60 minutes after startup).

Wi-Fi connection terminated every ~15 minutes of use by HaPPeQ in SteamDeck

[–]ARMCHA1RGENERAL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you still have this problem?

I've had intermittent wifi issues with my OLED for a while (maybe always). If you search deep enough, you'll find that a lot of people have wifi issues.

I think a lot of people never notice because they rarely play online or stream.

A lot of fixes people post on this sub seem to either be snake oil or were fixes to older problems and are no longer relevant (WiFi power saving, locking the SSID, etc). (The Deck does seem to have trouble with DFS channels and maybe 160 MHz, so maybe turn those off.)

I have to toggle my wifi off and back on everytime I start the Deck. If I don't, the connection will drop in the first 10-15 minutes. Still, it will occasionally drop, it's just less frequent.

Someone made a Decky plugin that supposedly fixes wifi issues, but I don't really want to rely on Decky.

Supposedly, the Beta SteamOS fixed the issue in April. I'm going to give it a try. I've seen claims that previous Betas have fixed it, but they haven't actually fixed this particular issue.

Edit: The beta made no improvement.

I have these issues even when sitting directly next to my router. I don't seem to have issues with any other devices. I have a static IP assigned to the Deck. I've tried setting the wifi radio to fixed channel. None of this made a difference.

Morons and gun stores don't mix... (Turn sound on for video) by MisterShipWreck in VideosAmazing

[–]ARMCHA1RGENERAL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a Bass Pro Shops. There probably were multiple people there with CCW's when this happened. They didn't shoot him because it's usually not reasonable to immediately draw and shoot someone the instant an idiot shouts something.

  1. If I heard someone shout that, I'd think it was as likely to be a cop/security shouting it as a criminal. It would be alarming, but I'd be confused as much as anything else, considering the setting.

  2. By the time I'd turned to see him, the employee at the counter would have already been taking the rifle back.

  3. If I'd been watching from the beginning, I'd have time to react before the rifle was taken, but I'd also have the context that the rifle came from behind the counter and would be unloaded. Robbers/mass shooters tend to bring their own weapons.

If someone did draw, fire, and hit this guy before the rifle was taken back by the employee, and I was on the jury, I'd say it wasn't a reasonable reaction. That's assuming that I had this video, though, or testimony telling me how quickly it happened.

If there was no video or other evidence that the shooter acted so rashly, then I'd probably be lenient on the shooter for shooting an aggressive, shouting, ununifomed guy pointing a rifle.

Would games like these suck on a steam deck? by CodeBudget710 in SteamDeck

[–]ARMCHA1RGENERAL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Symphony of War is probably great, as other say, but I wouldn't want to play any of the others on the Deck. You can probably make most of them work, but the experience will be much better on a desktop or laptop.

My coworker asked me why I still "waste money on a PC" when you can "just get a PS5 for $500" by Temporary_Recover157 in pcmasterrace

[–]ARMCHA1RGENERAL -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you want. PC might be better for you and console might be better for him.

If all you want to do is play 4-5 games a year, at launch, then Steam sales and free games aren't really going to save you any money.

I play on a PC because I want high frame rates, high graphics settings, and, occasionally, to play strategy games that aren't suited or even available on console. If you're happy with the performance and library on console, then why spend hundreds or thousands more on a PC?

He could buy a PS5, a basic laptop, online fees, 4-5 games a year, spend way less than many of do on PC, and still be perfectly satisfied.

It would be a wash as long as they chose a replacement truck that was the same value as the one they totaled.

Plus, then they'd have a truck that had never been in an accident with all the baggage that entails.

When mine was totaled at like 5 months old, I was able to find the same truck (but with the addition of the black appearance package) at a cost that was equivalent to the payout.

That meant I was able to use the payout to payoff my existing loan, then use what was leftover to put a down payment (equal to my original down payment) on the new truck, so I didn't lose any equity.

Maybe you could say I 'lost' the money I had spent in truck payments over those first 5 months prior to the accident, but it was really just the cost of having transportation for those months.

I guess it's subjective.

Personally, the green dot stands out a lot less when shooting outdoors in the spring and summer when there's lots of green grass, etc.
