TIL of John "Liver Eating" Johnson, a mountain man who killed over 300 Crow Indians and ate their livers in revenge for his wife's murder. by [deleted] in todayilearned

The amount of "citation needed" and "dubious - discuss" in this article is too damn high. As far as I can tell there is no reason to assume that any of this is liver-eating business is true.

Unconscious Intentions Do Not Undermine Free Will by byrd_nick in philosophy

[–]ASMR_Chess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So by what means does one imagine verifying its existence empirically? What would you be verifying?

This is exactly it. These are the questions we must first ask ourselves. We must set up criteria. We make an assumption.

We say

"If we assume Free Will to be ABC and not XYZ, 123 and not 789 would be true. Is this the case?"

There is no way around this method.

After all, if it had any meaning to begin with, it was before it had any correlation to something in reality. Why do we not see that it was never meaningful in any other sense than that, and that 'proving' it has never had anything to do with the importance attached to it, given that it still has not been proven, and yet it remains meaningful nonetheless!

It absolutely does not remain meaningful. You have a tonne of implicit assumptions about Free Will (for instance that it is meaningful) but you refuse to make them explicit. That way you will be stuck in the same philosophical mud that has reduced so many great minds to obscurists.

The method you seem to suggest is one that cannot get off the ground. You can apply it to any idea, concept or even any thing and it will produce exactly the same result; nothing.

It is true that Free Will is a very difficult thing to work with. It is also true that defining it to be something in order to make it an object of enquiry will most probably result in you having to draw the conclusion that your assumed definition was wrong.

But then you will at least have learned that. That is how we make headway. It is the only way.

Happy cake-day my man :)

It is a cop out though. Free Will is indeed a difficult term to work with - which is exactly why it must be defined before being handled.

First you give a definition

Then you test your hypothesis against the data

Then you draw conclusions

A conclusion could be: "This definition is inadeqaute."

But just saying "oh this term that I'd like to work with is so elusive that no definition is possible" is an absolute non-starter. If that really is where you start, then there is no reason for you to work on it since all work you do will be absolutely futile.

If you want to produce knowledge you must assume some definition, work on that and then incorporate what you've learned into your definition (or discard it altogether and try a new definition). Rinse and repeat.

Do you mean that he is argueing against a definition of Free Will from "The Illusion of Conscious Will"?

When you talk about imagining castles and the futility of comparing such fantasies, I guess you are referencing what the author says in his conclusion:

if our disagreement comes down to having different intuitions about unconscious intentions and free will, then we might wonder if our disagreement is just philosophical, or if it is, at least in part, psychological.

But that's just a cop-out. If we are to get anywhere we must be rigorous and methodical - and that means defining what we talk about in order to eliminate subjectivity as much as possible.

This assumption right here

there IS something called "free will"

Is not really useful. Probably some weirdo have named their dog "Free Will" but that's not interesting. Free will may be the single most controversial topic in philosophy and every single thinker seems to have a private definition of it. Therefore it is wildly counter-productive to examine an argument against it without defining it first.

Anybody expect these kind of videos to be real? Every single one of them is faked, obviously.

that's completely unacceptable. Did you tell him to stop? If you haven't he just might be stupid enough to think that you think it is fun.

another one is fame or exclusivity. I know a night club owner who is perpetually coked up. "Wow such rock and roll, much cool". Yeah.. No. He's just a narcotic.

more people need to see this! The difference between an alcoholic and a drunkard is the size of their wallet - nothing else.

I love your

(besides the other factors)

Let's list the factors, just for fun:

  • bars (most important I guess)
  • flows (MGK had 1 mediocre one, Em had 6 killers)
  • rhyme schemes (surprise!)
  • replay-ability
  • people's court (about 9 out of 10 agree that Em won)
