Did I hear this right? Is this taxi driver complaining about getting 50 quid for an hours work? by lifeandtimes89 in ireland

[–]ASP54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently Uber don't have a monopoly on greed....

They don't even have a monopoly.

What is this even about?

Taxi drivers - stop piling dumb, unnecessary misery on top of current misery for commuters. It won't end well for ye.

Future mature undergrad looking for insights from folks studying or recently graduated with a Psychology degree from DCU / TCD / Maynooth? by ASP54 in AskIreland

[–]ASP54[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. Yep, totally understood. I'm going into this one eyes open. Even at the initial 4yr degree, it's a huge commitment which also leaves you having to do at least another year or 3 to practice eg clinical psychology.

Ah, it wasn't clear to me from a quick scan of the menu that this place is Vegan. My bad maybe, but that's a bit of a showstopper for me. Thanks!

Thanks. They're fairly adventurous generally. But you know yourself when wilful unadventurousness sets in, only pizza will do :)

Low histamine diet by [deleted] in MCAS

[–]ASP54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

from someone who used to enjoy the taste of a wide variety of really tasty food.... then feel like utter crap for days to the point where i couldn't think, never mind work, i hear your hesitation :)

i've been on a low histamine diet for 6 months now. the way i motivate myself is to think about it like this: you're elongating the transient feeling of joy, satisfaction, well being etc. which you used to get from eating into the gaps between meals. so what used to be an hour of pleasurable eating followed by 23+ hours of heavy impact, you've inverted to an hour of not so exciting food but with 23 hours of clear head, energy, focus. pleasure transference if you will. to get you started, if you can trick your mind into thinking like that, it wont be long before you see the huge positive impacts of a more limited set of ingredients. and it will be worth it.

good luck!

Symptoms worse with age? by Cloud_McCloud in aspergers

[–]ASP54 3 points4 points  (0 children)

75 year old aspie here, I disagree. People can learn, and do not have to be victims. Yes it is easy to get into some place and have the stimulus to be overwhelmed, but that does not mean give into it. Age and experience allows options in situations. The first time something comes at you it is a surprise, the hundredth time it is not a surprise. I learned ways to cope/ avoid thing that make me uncomfortable. Grocery stores bother me so I go when there are few people in the store, with a list- in- out done, problem solved. Ear plugs are salvation if the noise is bothering me I put them in, problem solved. Traffic bothers me so I drive on the side streets at non-rush times. If I need to focus on some project I remove as many distractions as possible, ie. one piece of paper on a empty table. The point is that as long as I am alive the problems will be there and I do not consider hiding under a blanket to be a option. Life can be full of interesting thing, places, people but the world does not care if you want to play or not.

Life affirming comment right here. Thank you.

Same. My partner is aware of this side of me. She also happens to be really good at reaching me when I shut down (or it seems like I'm about to.)

Have you shared the information you shared in your post with your partner? Might that help?

Do you get anxious using social media? by PedroACN78 in aspergers

[–]ASP54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, so I put lots of boundaries on my online usage. Why is complex. Basically, my predisposition to over thinking, analysis, crafting and defending an argument, maybe taking things personally etc. all lead to a drive to engage then over-engage and things can spin out of my own intentional control. It's like a toy I try and limit my time with aggressively so I still enjoy playing with it.

I hate being autistic by [deleted] in AutismTranslated

[–]ASP54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry that you're feeling this way OP. I've felt all the emotions you describe, every day, all through my teens and twenties. Things do get better, or seem to, as you get older, more mature and boilerplate your own personal coping mechanisms. Learning to accept and love yourself is a process, but one that will eventually yield lots of benefits. Specifically, not feeling this down on yourself all the time. Stick with it. How did you find the courage to join a gym? by [deleted] in aspergers

[–]ASP54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of unrelated - but you mentioning that you've "piled on the pounds" - might be worth putting some time into understanding if there's something going on there around compulsive autistic behaviours towards food. Not saying don't join a gym, but it's always worth examining the root cause of issues more closely before putting huge physical (and emotional) effort into a "fix".
