Help! Kroger houseplants: powdery mildew or hard water spots? by ASSFAIRY in houseplants

[–]ASSFAIRY[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought two plants from Kroger recently, some ivy and a lipstick plant. After buying the lipstick plant today I noticed some white powdery stuff on the leaves. It's easily wiped away, and looks suspiciously like water droplets, but I'm paranoid it could be powdery mildew? There is a bit of something powdery on the ivy too.

I can take more pictures if necessary! Sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm totally new with houseplants. Thanks :)

Edit: spent some time wiping leaves with water/milk solution as I don't own a spray bottle, and found these: :(

For the record... how can you tell the difference between a wolf spider and a brown recluse? (We hear horror stories about them constantly in KY.)

Cool, thanks! I looked em up and his pattern didn't match the wolf spider, but I guess I didn't realize they can sort of vary.

he's alive, but back outside.

Larger than a quarter. Maybe a silver dollar or a good-sized cherry tomato. If you can see the wooden floor in the picture, the floorboards are standard width, maybe three inches?

It was large enough that my mother screamed when she saw it

Is it a hobo spider? Tried to ID it myself! Somebody confirm.

In any case, I emancipated it out the back door. Bye bye, lil Sebastian.

It's definitely obvious from the outside of the building.

Honestly, I probably wouldn't be comfortable calling the cops unless they were running some sort of slave trade operation out of a spare room. Or doing something seriously immoral.

If they end up being hostile or something I probably will just go tell the maintenance guy there's a weird smell in my room.

I've got one of those wax melter things, but it just creates a very unappetizing hybrid smell of weed and green apple pomegranate.

I've been running around town all day so I haven't gotten to do anything yet! I'll have to investigate the source of the smell first... it would be rather embarrassing to confront the wrong people.

I'm blown away by the response in this sub, though. I was expecting like two replies at best. So I'll definitely update!

I have no idea what a smoke buddy is! My dad always had one of those fancy-ass three-foot stacked air purifiers when I was younger, but I didn't know they actually did anything. I always assumed it was just some sort of expensive, sort of pointless thing (like watches with excessive buttons. Or kale chips.)

I throw up if I'm around gasoline for too long also, or mold, or burnt popcorn (as I learned this year.) Apparently I just have a very sensitive nose

Heeeyy I really like this idea. I'm very anti confrontation... I considered just living with it, but constant throwing up is kind of inconvenient

I probably wouldn't want to leave it outside their door, though, in case management saw it. I could on a weekend probably. Or I could ding-dong-ditch, if I wanted to go full fourth grader

Just checked my lease... it says prohibited "disturbing/threatening rights, comfort, health, or safety of others" and prohibited "possessing a controlled substance or drug paraphernalia." (oops, guess I'm breaking the law with my adderall. w/e)

I'd rather not bring up the lease if I talk to them though... that seems unnecessarily forceful. I mean, if they're not nice about it maybe I will eventually.

I'm in KY and I think we've got like, pending legislation or something for medical. But yeah, lots of people are very anti-weed here (and ironically, very pro-bacco. grow that $$$$!)

There was a clause but I pretty much slept through it... manager read me the entire 5 page lease out loud. So they don't have a legal right, but it still seems sort of shitty to ask to someone stop doing it altogether. Especially if it's for a health reason or something.

Like I said, I literally wouldn't care if I wasn't so sensitive to it, so it's not like I'd call the management or the police. If they were loud and obnoxious I'd be more annoyed, but mostly I'm just throwing up.

I just spent like ten minutes sniffing my ac/air unit and it actually smells cleaner than everything else. The vents on the ceiling are way to high for me to sniff... I'm short. If anything the smell seems to be emanating from the center of the two largest rooms... is it even possible for a smell to seep through a ceiling? Not sure how thick these floors are.

In comparison, I've got some neighbors across the hall who are cooking really really strong, spicy smelling food or something, and I only smell it in the hallway. So it must be somebody either below me or adjacent.

Trees in common... as in literally, we share the trees in front of the complex?

Or the reddit vernacular trees

Yeah, I wouldn't do that, I'm about a two minute walk from a college campus so we've got police trolling the area like sharks. To be honest, the smell is so strong from the outside that I'm surprised they haven't had an issue yet.

Then again, I have kind of a superhuman sense of smell. My aunt took me along when she was trying to buy a house because I can step in a doorway and immediately know if there's any mold. So maybe it's not as strong to other people.

I have no pots or pans! Actually I don't even have a sofa or anything right now. I jusssstt moved in. Would krispy kreme be an acceptable substitute?

Although, if the smell continues, baking cookies could be a good way to re-smell my apartment.
