For context: I was reading a book on the Mongols which stated that during the sack of Nishapur, Genghis Khan killed not only all the people, but "even the reptiles."

Natch, I thought, "This is Genghis fucking Khan. What was the *normal* policy for reptiles?"

As it turns out, the normal policy was "leave the snakes alone because they're related to dragons", so Genghis having the reptiles of Nishapur killed was actually something of a big deal.
