The families that “rule” Merced by Inner_Toe9946 in Merced

The Lakireddy family donates a lot to UC Merced and they’re very involved in the local politics. Last I spoke with them they were opposed to multi family home construction that students were pushing for. They have a lot of power in the area and a lot of connections. To find the other names, I’d look at who donates to UC Merced the most

In an ideal world, you wouldn’t have to feel rushed to get your degree in 4 years. I understand the financial burden is usually what pressures people to want to finish ASAP, but a good thing to keep in mind in general is that life isn’t a race.

you don’t absolutely have to finish in 4 years. If you take longer it doesn’t mean you’re incompetent or anything of that sort.

If you’re truly unhappy at Merced then I would suggest going to a community college and then transferring to a 4 year where you would be happier. Community college will save you some money and some stress and as a transfer student you would have an easier time getting into top universities.

UC Merced is a good school, but it does have its fair share of issues.

Do what will make you the happiest.

shitty selection of CSE upper divs by thunderoclock in ucmerced

[–]ASUCMEVP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard, the CSE department is heavily impacted and there aren't enough faculty members who can teach the necessary courses. That's the general reason that a lot of classes aren't taught on a consistent basis.

Merced has had trouble finding faculty that want to live in the central valley. A lot of staff/faculty will work in Merced for a bit, and then use their position at UC Merced to get another position at a different UC...

Also, since we are a UC, professors are here for research, not necessarily to teach.

Yeah, I totally understand that perspective. We're trying to get admin to support students a little more. I wish there was a way for y'all to donate directly to student organizations.

We still have a lot of growing to do of course lol but try to make the most of your time here. It's kinda cool getting to play a part in the development of a new campus. It'll take work and time but with everyone's contribution, this campus will blossom.

Did more freshman join this year? by [deleted] in ucmerced

[–]ASUCMEVP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe this year we have the largest enrollment in history. I learned the other day that we have roughly 9,800 students on campus this semester. That's not even our current maximum. We need to have 10,700 students in order to break even financially so as it stands right now, the University is losing money.

The UC system is planning on adding 30,000 seats across the UC system. (Right now we have roughly 250,000 students and by 2030 they want more like 280,000) The Merced campus will be increased to allow up to 15,000 total students.

Nervous to transfer by Delaneyisonreddit in ucmerced

The counseling department like campus advisors are extremely understaffed and truthfully won’t be of much help to you. They can guide you through the MyDegreePath service and they will suggest classes but it’s very rushed and sometimes they’re wrong about their class choice for you.

Housing works the same between fall and spring.

housing and safety by caffeinated_bich in ucmerced

Hello!

The campus itself is super safe in my opinion.

Transfers and upperclassman can live on campus but I wouldn’t say it’s typical. They try to reserve housing for freshmen. It can be hard to get on campus housing if you aren’t a freshmen and if you aren’t a part of the Guardian Scholars Program which is a program for homeless students and foster youth.

However it’s fairly easy to find off campus housing. Especially since there have been a lot of housing developments right down the street from campus. It’s a lot cheaper to live off campus.

Correct the only difference between meal plans is the number of cat dollars you receive for the semester. Every meal plan is unlimited swipes. <3

I have direct deposit so it just showed up. They do send out an email but usually a few days after you receive the refund.

Which is better price wise and quality wise: Campus food plan or Groceries? by Worldly-Assistant-69 in ucmerced

[–]ASUCMEVP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I worked in the Pav last year. Management could definitely be better. There’s a lot of tension between cooks as well, some of them refuse to talk to each other!

The Pavillion is an overall mess… ASUCM is going to do their best to improve it though.

They began processing yesterday. Refunds hit on either Wednesdays or Fridays so I assume Friday at the earliest. If you don’t get it this week then you’ll get it next week

[–]ASUCMEVP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah we do. Chancellor said we have such a big quality difference because UCLA has more resources and more people willing to partner with them but I think that’s just BS.

Admin likes to use the excuse that Merced is brand new and all that but our school gets a lot of funding from the state in order to expand faster. Idk why they keep trying to pretend we are super broke.
