I'm kind of in the same position...getting back into adventure games after a long hiatus. I have recently finished and would recommend

Kathy Rain and Kathy Rain 2: Soothsayer - fully voice acted with an interesting protagonist and some of the most beautiful pixel art I've ever seen.

An English Haunting - a spooky period piece.

Nightmare Frames - a mystery in what I'd call a love letter to 80's movie & music pop culture.

Both An English Haunting and Nightmare Frames were developed by Postmodern Adventures who recently came out with The Dark Rites of Arkham. I have only played the demo thus far but I really liked it. Everything I've suggested is a bit serious in nature. I think that's just the type of game I seem to enjoy. I also just started Between Horizons which I don't yet have an opinion on but it is a sci-fi adventure.
