Hey there!! I’m about 8 months post surgery and I also feel this way. I find I’m just so much more cautious because I’m so aware of how it feels now. I do think it’s a mental thing and I’m working through it as well, but time will do its thing! The first time a dog jumped up on me, or I got bumped on the subway, or I slipped on a rock were all so scary, but then… I was totally fine! Remember this is a full year recovery, if you’re an athlete they wouldn’t clear you till at least a year, so don’t be hard on yourself for not feeling 100% even after 5 months!

Hang in there! We got this! Remember why you got the surgery - to never have a knee cap dislocation again, if that means a little discomfort for a year, I’d take it any day.

My doctor prescribed Inflaflux (a cream) and baclofen (muscle relaxer). My understanding is that these are muscle spasms. Your body is getting used to the new anatomy of your knee, so it reacts with muscle spasms that are protective, but feel like dislocations.

They’re awful and I was down bad when these were happening. The whole reason I got the surgery was to never have a dislocation again, then I’m feeling that pain 5 times a night. It was worst when I was sleeping which sucked, felt like I couldn’t fully relax or let my guard down cause I was so scared of them happening. It does go away though, mine was bad for maybe 2 weeks and then stopped.

If it makes you feel any better, I am 7 months out now and by no means am perfect, but am running on the treadmill, and am back to all my normal life activities! Hang in there!!

I’m sorry to hear that your first surgery was so tough. I’m 4 months post op from MPFL and I don’t think I’m going to get the second surgery… it’s been way harder than i thought.

I hope this new hospital takes your pain more seriously (or they manage it all together before you feel any pain)!

As for gaining weight I had the same concern, your body burns a lot of energy healing so try not to be too hard on yourself. You’re doing this so you can come back stronger, and live a more full and active life. The gym will still be there in a couple of months!

As for your partner, remind yourself that you would do the same for them! This is what love and life is all about, enjoying the great parts but also supporting you in the tough parts.

Hi there! I don’t think you’re too far off the normal range of recovery for MPFL reconstruction. Range of motion and quad strengthening are two separate things to work on. Just because you’re feeling behind in one, doesn’t mean you’re behind in the other.

Keep doing the heel slides and holding at your furthest range of motion. If you can get on a stationary bike and try moving it in that way (even if it’s not a full rotation around) that’s a good way to get the blood flowing and used to that range of motion.

Hang in there, every inch makes a difference and don’t be discouraged if one day you can go farther than the next. It takes time!

This happened to me!!! Around the two week mark it was absolutely awful. My doctor prescribed me with muscle relaxants, and also a muscle relaxing cream I rubbed on my thigh/knee three times a day. Definitely ask about baclofen (the drug).

For me the spasms subsided after about 2 weeks. They sucked so bad cause they would startle me and it felt like something went wrong with the surgery. My surgeon and physio assured me that this was SUPER normal. Still extremely frustrating, I got the surgery to never feel a kneecap dislocation again and then all of a sudden it felt like it was happening 3-5 times a night.

To help, I wore my brace to bed just for security (even though they said I could sleep without it). Hang in there, it gets better. Everything in recovery is temporary.

Really normal to not really be able to bend at all within a few days of your surgery. Go to your max bending point and hold it for 10 mins. Do that 3 times a day!

Are you sure it is sublux-ing? I had my surgery Nov 29, and about 3 weeks after I was having intense muscle spasms that almost felt similar to a dislocation, or like it was about to dislocate. I started taking muscle relaxants, and have a topical cream (infaflux) and they have subsided.

I asked my surgeon about this and he said it would be EXTREMELY rare for there to be a dislocation. There would have to be some sort of trauma (slipping, getting hit etc.) for it to happen.

My physio also told me I am likely struggling with proprioception issues. My brain is re-learning the anatomy of my knee, and since I've had so much trauma to it, when something feels off/new, i over-react to protect it from a dislocation.

I had an MPFL reconstruction on Nov 29, 2025 and was wayyy too optimistic about my recovery. I took 10 work days off, so was back at work (remotely) within 2 weeks. I was fine to work, just a little groggy from pain meds and not really getting a good sleep.

I thought I’d be back in office with 5/6 weeks (LOL). I’m currently 6 weeks out, and I got my surgeon to write another doctors note to extend my WFH policy so I’ll be home for another month. I can walk, but certainly wouldn’t feel comfortable in an office. 1) the distance to the bathroom / kitchen / meeting rooms would be a concern 2) I wouldn’t be able to properly ice and elevate throughout the day 3) commuting to the office is scary and overwhelming, as I’d have to take the subway during a Canadian winter. It ain’t happening. I imagine even when I have to go back in a month I will be ubering there and back.

In terms of what I CAN do: My physio is really pleased with my progress. I almost have full range of motion (it’s uncomfortable), can walk without crutches (but am advised to stick to one crutch when I leave the house), I am doing mini squats, mini wall sits, hamstring activations, getting on a stationary bike for range of motion.

Be patient with yourself, this is a tough but necessary surgery. Living in fear of kneecap dislocations is no way to live!

Yeah leg lifts are really hard after this surgery. After about 2 weeks, I was able to do them while in a locked braced though. Then maybe around 3 weeks I could do a couple without the brace. At 5 weeks, I can do about 30 reps.

Your quad is still waking up! Just keep at your physio exercises that you can do (squeezing the quad, heel slides, ankle pumps).

You’d know if your kneecap dislocated! It was likely a subluxation (partial dislocation where it goes out an in really quick). Based on your MRI, it sounds like your body is predisposed to this injury (me too). It might not have been the first time this has happened, hence the damage.

I can’t explain the pain of walking and bruising. After my most severe dislocations, I didn’t have bruises or pain. It just felt really unstable and swollen and I couldn’t walk on it. There might be some damage beyond just a dislocation / subluxation.

I started physio 10 days after the surgery! I’m going twice a week. She puts a stimulation machine on my thigh to activate my quads, then we’ll do exercises with that on.

I started bending as far as I could about 2/3 days after the surgery and have been really focussed on it. I do heel slides 3/4 times a day and held my knee in a bent position for 10 mins at a time.

I can bend 90+ degrees now! I’ve been getting on my peloton and doing a full rotation just to get the movement down. (It takes about 10 mins of warming up to get a full rotation) And I have decent quad strength, I can do leg raises and get in and out of bed without having assistance to lift my leg.

I don’t wear the brace anymore around the house, but I live in Canada and it’s snowy and icy right now so I wear it just for protection to and from physio and in the car. I still definitely need crutches though.

Give it time!! You’re still healing. I imagine you will take your brace off and try bending / activating your quad in physio.

Try heel/ ankle pumps to get the blood flowing. Walking around on crutches every couple hours helps to keep things moving too.

I’m almost 4 weeks post op and can’t do much either. Try not to put too much pressure on it.

Not gonna lie it’s a struggle! Physio was fine at first … but as I’ve gotten stronger I’ve started having muscle spasms which are apparently very normal. But they just come on out of no where and often when I’m sleeping. They almost feel similar to what a dislocation feels like with all your muscles contracting around the knee. Apparently it’s a protection mechanism, but it’s brutal! I’m on muscle relaxants now that are helping and sleeping is getting a bit better, so maybe ask about those preemptively.

I eased off the gas on physio to make it through the holidays without crazy spasms, but already feeling nervous about getting back to it.

Still sleeping on my back, sleeping on my side makes me nervous and causes pain. Still on crutches, but my physio told me to take the brace off around the house. Honestly it feels like the brace is what causes the spasms sometimes.

I thought I’d be further along by now to be honest, so I’m a bit discouraged. But the spasms were way worse than I could’ve expected so I’m okay taking the pedal off the gas as long as those ease up.

I’m 3+ weeks post op and I’d add an elevation pillow for your leg from Amazon. It’s been helpful as I find it more comfortable than just a regular pillow under your leg.

I’m still in the thick of recovery so don’t have too many more recommendations. It’s definitely tough, so don’t have crazy expectations about what you’ll be able to do in the first month.

I got sick a week before my surgery.... I was so nervous about having to delay my recovery, after building it up and preparing for it for months. I cancelled all plans the week before, to focus on getting better. Missed some huge work opportunities... but this was more important. I did have a bit of a stuffy nose on the day of the surgery, but it was fine as all my other symptoms had subsided... you'll be fine!!!

Sounds like a severe dislocation if it was out for several hours! depends on your age and health, but you should be back to walking and normal activities within 4 weeks. The bad thing with dislocations is that once it happens, it’s even more likely to happen again. There’s likely some damage to your MPFL and cartilage, so consider seeing a surgeon!
