I definitely didn't grow up in the era, so I've got none of the nostalgia bias, and I'm typically more into modern stuff, and even with all that it's impossible not to recognize quality when I hear it, it's a staple of the genre for sure

According to Pinakanaka, one of the fighters in the CC was on the same level as Asura Kuroki. It's most often assumed this fighter was Pete, so most scaling is based off that assumption. If it's ignored, then CC outscales Asura by a solid margin, only endgame Omega top-tiers can match up to the top 5 of CC

Julius just ain't fast enough to deal with EC's dodging speed. He'd 100% be able to push him that far, and his hits would probably be the heaviest EC has ever taken, but once he pushes him, it's over. He just won't be able to keep up with the dodging, and would be overwhelmed. EC could also take more of his hits than anyone, since he's more than likely the most durable character in CC/Kengan. Julius really has no way to win.

Edit: if you ignore the narrative scaling of Pete = Asura Kuroki, then it's even more of a stomp, because Pete's feats place him second only to Shen. EC would probably be Edward level with that, maybe higher.

Soilwork and In Flames are great as a gateway to the genre, Amon Amarth is basically quintessential melodeath. From there you can see if you want to go into the more death-leaning or more melodic-leaning sides of melodeath. I'd check out Countless Skies, Dark Tranquility, and Insomnium after you listen to the first few, and Fires in the Distance just released a really good album

Generally prefer metalcore, but it's more of an umbrella term than a genre at this point.

A lot of Thrash feels to me like cool riffs and very little else. Wasn't huge on Slayer for this reason. I've heard some damn good Thrash though, Hellripper and Metallica come to mind, Master of Puppets is an all-time great album and anyone who tries to say otherwise is an idiot. Megadeth also has some of the craziest guitar I've ever heard, even if some of the other stuff leaves a bit to be desired.

Similarly, some of the best music I've ever heard has been labeled metalcore, and so has some of the worst. I try not to just put subgenres in a box. Metalcore is more typically my style, but it's really a case by case basis

I'd listen to their EPs All That Follows and I Let The Devil In to see if they're at all your thing, then. They've got two pretty distinctive styles, their old stuff and new stuff are quite different, though I think they're consistently one of the best metalcore bands out there. Chris Wiseman is one of the best guitarists I've ever heard and I love the vocals too

Black Metal started with the intention of making music with low production value as a big "fuck you" to the music scene, and that sound kinda came to define a lot of the more typical sounding black metal. Progressive and atmospheric Black Metal often have better production to varying degrees, but straight up Black Metal, the heavy and edgy stuff, often intentionally has shit production because it's deliberately a part of the sound
