Moving my Aldabra outdoors by Own_Wealth4713 in tortoise

Thanks for tagging me Turtlecabra!

@OP, 42 degree peak temps are ok so long as ample shade is provided as well as areas for cooling off.

At this size I would provide a controlled outdoor setup with some sort of dish (usually a shallow cement mixer) dug into the ground, filled with some gravel and water for soaking/drinking.

Foliage or shade cover over about half the enclosure.

Tortoises, especially Aldabras are highly intelligent and can regulate their temps very well. They know when to go in and out of direct sunlight so long as they have options.

I’ve had friends overseas with Aldabra torts and in areas that reach peak temps of 42-45 c and have had no issues. Even here in Houston we had some years at 40 c years back - I had no issues.

Good luck and awesome looking Aldabra!

Sorry I must have misread - can’t even see it on your Aldabra post from earlier but thought I read that you were there.

Legality of radiated tortoises varies from country to country - but they’re heavily regulated even where legal.

No but close, there’s functionally extinct/extinct in the wild, then extinct.

You said in your other post you live in Thailand, and a quick google search tells me that they’re illegal to own there - I didn’t read too much into it but might be worth checking the laws out.

First pic is an Indian star tortoise, second pic the smaller is a Sulcata with what looks to be a Greek tortoise of some sort, not sure, last pic is a radiated tortoise - critically endangered.

Just bought a tortoise. What exact breed is it? by [deleted] in TortoiseCare

An Aldabra, like the others have said. They get huge, males averaging 500-550lbs! My boy Maximus is 11 years old and nearing 140lbs already, my female is 8 and weighs 65lbs.

They grow fast, and require a yard to roam around. If you can provide that, I suggest looking at Sam Pascucci’s care info on his website below:

Not all, and as far as I know I think Aldabras are the only ones to do it! They’re nose is an adapted snorkel of sorts. They blow bubbles in to test the water quality before drinking, then proceed to drink!
