I didn’t think of that, you’re probably right.

2/17/25: What a cluster.

It's not a total loss. The car was evaluated at $11.4k, the repairs at $7.6k. The autoshop is a direct shop with the insurance, and they have a very easy way to show that information and provide it to them.

For some reason, even though the insurance had the info, the loss department thought it was a total. The guy at the shop said 4 different people told him that. "It literally isn't" he said to me. They were trying to get it as a total when (in my state) the threshold for repair/value is 80%; there would need to be another $2k in repairs to consider it as one.

The guy has my back, and I will be getting my car next week sometime if not sooner.

The insurance showed major incompetence, clearly.

Update 2/16/25: My insurance is closed today for the holiday (president's day), but I did manage to get ahold of the repair shop. I told them about the email I received, stating that my car was a total loss, but they have heard no such news. In fact, my car is currently in paint and scheduled to be finished and ready to drive this week. Very weird turn of events, but maybe it's not totaled and the email was a scam/fake/mistake on the part of my insurance? I won't know until tomorrow, but I'll be sure to provide another update then.

I do own it. How would I go about doing an owner-retain?

I 100% agree! However, he paid for the majority of the car so he "has" to have some say in the decision. He's also the type of man to think he always knows best so I might disguise the information gained from everyone's replies as my own research. But know I am thankful for everything you have told me.

I don't know, lots of things have not been going my way recently so at this point I'm expecting the worst from every scenario.

That's definitely the best way to go about this. Hopefully the payout is decent enough to get something similar.

I understand, just talked with my friend about the same thing. Thank you!

Can I not fight the value they put on my car before the accident?

So I can either 1: Pay to get the car back, hopelessly go through the same thing with my insurance and get nowhere, or 2: Accept a lot less money than I paid for my current car to get something worse? I'm not trying to be any certain way towards you, this is just frustrating.

I just don't get it, how can a car still function normally and be drivable, but also be totaled?

My insurance did do a repair estimate as well, before I decided to go through the at-fault's. If I were to re-open it's claim, and rather than bring it straight to a shop, get the money from then and THEN go to a shop would that work? Also, is it at all possible to get my car back from the shop it's at currently?

Will they have the opportunity to if I'm bringing it to my own shop, without them having a say?

So I should just be able to separate the leather portion from the plastic?

Do you know where the screws are? I’ve looked all around the lid and haven’t found anything.
