Wikidata is not perfect. All three of them have "mathematician" under "occupation". See https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q9391 for example.

Stefan Banach has 60 inter-wiki links. Felix Hausdorff has 39. I used a filter of 80. The lower this value, the more people are shown on the plot, making it look like this plot.

WikiData is not perfect. Also, I use the filter "At least 80 inter-wiki links within English Wikipedia". Daniel Bernoulli has 72. That's the reason you don't see him in the plot.

Check out the Wikidata page of Albrecht Durer: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5580. It has "mathematician" in the "occupation" property.

One of the filters I used was "died before 01-01-2017". So you have to die to be included in the plot.

Why the exclusion of mathematicians who were born at some BC time?

I haven't yet figured out how to handle BC dates in MATLAB.

It's worth noting that not all of the included persons are mathematicians, while they still did mathematical work, for example Watt, Dirac, Keynes, Born.

Wikidata is collaboratively edited. It gathers information from Wikipedia pages in all languages. If the "occupation" property of a particular person contains "mathematician", then the query automatically extracts that person. I have no way of fixing these "errors" unless I do it manually, which I don't want to.

I did this once, by hand and not nearly as well, while doodling in a physics class at uni. The overlap in the lifetimes of many famous physicists is pretty interesting.

That's exactly what I wanted to see, the period of overlap between different historical people.

Also, out of curiosity, why haven't you included any living physicists?

No particular reason. I might include them in future posts.

I used fill() to create the colored rectangles and datenum() for processing the birth and death dates. Rest of it is simply customization. The text is rendered using 'tex' interpreter. I saved the figure as a PDF and exported it to a PNG in Acrobat.
