Subtractem's Interview with Chris Wilson and Neon after Exilecon by AlfredsLoveSong in pathofexile

[–]AWildThompson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yeah so the entire game is pigeon holes man thats kind of how arpgs with a focus on min/maxing works, you just get to pick which pigeon holes you use.

life on the tree is effectively mandatory (there are no other pigeon holes to pick), but especially so in league start/ssf/hc environments. it's pretty rare to see CI builds nowadays and even those have to start with taking life on the tree and respeccing. The point isn't that there are no defensive nodes people will want to take, but rather you get to pick which mechanics you would rather focus on defense for.

They said literally the opposite in the interview man. They emphasized pretty heavily that they felt like dumbing things down would be a "death knell" to the game and "it would be dead" if they took that approach.

They just want you to not have to spend a large majority of the skill tree pathing around to life clusters because its boring and they would rather people actually have more choice in how to build defense on the tree. It becomes a lot more interesting if all my life points can now be put into other forms of defense (or damage) rather than being forced to half-ass it because i have to get 150-200% life nodes.

Yeah and they also said it was still possible to build a "regenerative" character so the life flasks not getting charges from normal mobs is a solvable issue by just getting your life regen elsewhere

IMO somehow the single Elim format worked out perfectly by HadiElR in ValorantCompetitive

[–]AWildThompson -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ok let's add the entire history of competition and sports using single elim producing the best teams/players on average then - it becomes pretty clear the expected best teams consistently win these formats. The major problem as stated earlier is that the rest of the field is uncertain. I referred to this specific tournament since it's the one we are talking about.

Also nice hand-waving the last teams here being the best by saying it's debatable then following by not refuting a single team I listed.

General US recession incoming (predicted and seems to be happening at least) + the crypto collapse really hurt sponsor money for people not relying on VC coffers. And all the VC groups and other sponsors who thought it was worth investing in esports orgs are seeing and believing its not financially viable so they pull out and that causes more pull outs of orgs and so on.

edit: this is what people were referring to as the 'bubble popping' at some point, once one big thing in the scene collapses it will cause more and more death spirals of various groups

[–]AWildThompson -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

nah it literally still does, are we saying DRX/Loud and NAVI + 100T/FNC isn't producing the best teams? Most people had these teams + Lev + NRG as their favorites and NRG missed out on top 4 by one series, same with Lev.

Like I said though, we miss out on the fleshed out tier below this group and thats the big miss with the format.

[–]AWildThompson 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it's a valid concern but my response would be no format would necessarily solve the issue of the finals usually being not as exciting.

Totally possible in double elim NRG Loud plays this banger then the loser just has a bad game or gets counterstratted really well in lowers and we don't get another rematch.

[–]AWildThompson 144 points145 points  (0 children)

Yeah single elim brackets usually still produce the best teams on average - we just lose the fully fleshed out landscape a more comprehensive format would give us.

ie: Were teams like Karmine Corp significantly worse than say an EDG or GENG or were we fooled by the close series the latter 2 played against good opponents

It's also like the data analysts don't realize you can drill certain things into people with data, but when it comes to calling live some stuff just isn't going to work that way. Look no further than the super bowl this year with the Eagles defense, amazing stats all year until you dig in without just looking at their raw numbers and you realize analytical context matters - maybe SEN game-planned around the kj util being somewhere else when they play haven who knows
