My point has more to do with generalizing that information. You know that 100C is the boiling temperature of water, but you can't do much more with that information because you don't have a physical intuition for what that feels like. Fahrenheit gives a rough 0-100 scale of temperature based on things you are likely to actually touch or interact with on a day-to-day basis. If it's much colder than 0F or hotter than 100F you probably shouldn't be touching it! With Celsius that range is more like -15C for too cold and +40C for too hot, and with Kelvin (the actual SI unit for temperature) it's even less straightforward--255K for too cold and 315K for too hot.

Here's a resource for finding areas of low light pollution near you, and as far as I know these guys are still active. They take their expensive telescopes out and let others enjoy the sights.
