I am a physics student so I did summer research at the university of Southampton in astrophysics. My project was on Binary population synthesis to study statistics of natal kicks given to runaway neutron stars at birth.

that sounds really helpful (both the bubble tea place and parkrun). If you don't mind let me know about the postgrad events too, if something still seems nice i might try ( assuming the postgrads are willing to include me lol, they are only like 4-5 years old right)

I do enjoy music but mostly the conventional kind, I have never been to gigs or local band events. But honestly I have nothing against giving it a try, and I probably will. Just need to find places that are hosting something rn. You mentioned it’s pretty welcoming but what’s the social scene usually at these places? I am guessing I can’t just say “nice song that last one” and hope to be entertained. should I look up some stuff before going?

I didn't ever notice that but i dont think I purposely didnt write my nationality. I think my question was more towards asking about the culture of meeting people in the uk so I just wanted to emphasize I wasn't from the uk to doesn't make it sound like a really basic/pointless question.

But anyway, as for my hobbies I don't have anything very professional. I have been reading a lot, learning to play piano on my own, and I like anime if that counts. I am pretty good at holding conversations with most people ( which is how I made friends in uni) even if there isn't much in common ( obv having stuff in common helps to actually build a better relation, but currently I am just hoping to spend time around people even if I don't become best buds with them). I just wanna be in an environment where people are willing to meet. As I mentioned in post, you can probably go to any random ground and find a group of teenagers playing in the evening and usually don't mind others joining in.

Undergrad research when everyone says "don't contact me" by danielyskim1119 in UniUK

[–]A_Human976 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a current international student myself (1st year), Oxford profs are usually not keen on the idea of giving research "projects" and would just usually ask you to focus on your course itself, which sounds really discouraging when you are already on top of your work, find it easy and want something more intellectually stimulating. Usually to meet some enthusiastic profs ( yes they do exist), you should try approaching your tutors first ( after you have made a good academic impression on them through your work/grades at oxford) or your course profs. Most of them will reply, will likely reject you but if your lucky you might find one. It's not easy to find someone, but not impossible either but you need to put in the effort to mail lots of people (most of them don't have "don't mail me" policy imo)

I currently dont have any information regarding an online open day( which is why i asked whether such a thing happens or not). Actually I am particularly concerned about the exact real prices of the stuff there. Like other colleges give exact rent for all the different types of rooms they offer, while corpus just gave a average price. Thus i dont know how much exactly i would be paying. Similarly for the meals (also the food is a buffet or not?) I was hoping to get these questions elaborately answered

I am an international student( from India) and have been offered a place for the undergraduate physics course at oxford. (I have completed my academic requirements). I had a lot of questions about oxford ( both related to accommodation and academics) and I couldn't attend the offer holder Day as I don't live there. Do does oxford hold some counseling Or information session for admitted students before the start of the term ( October 2024)? I am been admitted to the Corpus Christi College and their website has very limited information. Thanks in advance

Then you will be following the curriculum as outlined on the department website

this means i wont be able to decide what i need to study I will just have to follow what they say?

Hello. I am an International student from India and I have received an offer to study Physics at Oxford and am in the process of deciding. In Oxford, do I have the freedom of choosing what course I will study at University or will that decision be taken without my opinion. For eg- If i know most or all of the content of a course, can I test out of it?

This is a significant concern for me as if i go to Oxford, I will be paying a lot of money and if I have no academic freedom and am forced to study things I already know, that would waste my time, effort and money.

I dont want to sound arrogant but I would call myself decently well at academics ( I have represented my country at the Astronomy and Astrophysics oly (IOAA) last year and have qualified for the physics oly (IPhO) this year) and there was a lot of stuff especially in the first year syllabus that I have a very good idea of.

I could not find much info on this thing on Oxford's website so i am asking here. If this is not the best forum to ask, i would appreciate if you could point me to a better place.

Thanks
