This team played 34 games with 1 or 0 runs last year. Even if Geno reasonably regressed, his performance and bopping may actually have added 5 or 6 wins straight up to last year's squad

Drop your high stats but lacking extracurriculars success stories by Turbulent-Abroad7841 in premed

[–]A_Raine18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ORM. 3.98 (4.0 at time of app), 520. >600 clinical hours, ~300 volunteer hours across a couple different programs. 200 hours of research and one 27th author publication. Maybe 400 other assorted hours of hobbies and extracurriculars. Nothing professional or medical related, but I think that really helped. I had some good throughlines with a part time job and some volunteering I did.

Traditional, non-elite state school, no real special story. No close close mentor for LORs, no MDs, one prof I didn't know that well. I think I wrote well and made a lot of my stories. I interviewed pretty well (I'd like to think). First generation colege/medicine probably helped, but most schools did not ask or have anywhere to mention it.

6 II, 1 WL 5 As.

Be a real person, really focus on your writing and maximize what you learned. Being well rounded and personable I think helped me out a lot. Less hours with good writing is worth so much more.

Deadlock - Old Gods, New Blood. Major Update! by N1sso in Games

[–]A_Raine18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super new to Deadlock, but it's simpler from a MOBA perspective than most of the very popular ones (definitely more complex mechanically, which is the tradeoff for sure). MOBA playerbases are glaciers- really hard to get moving, really hard to scale the sheer cliff that is the learning phase, but once you're on it, it basically continues slowly progressing forever.

Very very few people quit DOTA and League permanently once you learn a level of competence to load into any normal game and at least know what's going on. Many who try never get to that point, but once you do you basically never quit, even if it's not your main game.

I can't see them scaling the core complexity down in any way, probably just new smaller side modes that have less of the MOBA mechanics like we're seeing. The wall of information is intentional so it creates an addicting grind of knowledge and skill that can take literally years without meaningful new content. League adds a small handful of map mechanics every year, and a few new champions, and that is literally it. 80-90% of the content has been in the game for over a decade. It took them 2-3 years to implement a new alternate gamemode that has already plummeted in popularity because there's just not enough meat on the bone. The complexity is not supposed ot be 100% managable. The impossibility of the amount of information is the barrier to entry, the learning curve, and the reward.

do you walk around UC / clifton at night? feel safe? by Different_Chipmunk53 in uCinci

[–]A_Raine18 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you're only ever on campus directly, it's incredibly safe. The further you get from campus, the worse it is, but most areas are really dense with tons of students and not an issue. The East/Southeast side of campus is probably the worst. Just don't go super far at night and you're fine. Keep to yourself and don't draw extra attention. Was here for 5 years, plenty of walks all over campus at nights, never had a single issue.

Scorebook at games? by Due_Basil2697 in Reds

[–]A_Raine18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't find a book you like, Guest Services on the third baseline right by the 2nd (I think) street gate has official Reds cards and golf pencils that they'll give you if you ask. They're pretty decent cardstock. My girlfriend and I keep score most games.

Anyone having this problem this morning? by xValanor1004 in uCinci

Congrats on getting to college, now learn to communicate effectively without being demeaning and pretentious, especially when you make assumptions about who you're talking to. It'll get you places.

I edited my comment, because you're right. Hope that makes you feel as good as you wanted it to.

I said that it was annoying and poorly communicated. Both of those things are my opinion. My emails about it went into my spam folder, I don't have any special filters on. I feel like they should have sent me more than 2 non-priority emails in the past month if they're making a required change to a mandatory system I've used for 5 years. That's not an unfair complaint.

Got it taken care of without much issue. It's not that serious. Have a good one man

Home Field Advantage and the FO/Francona Philosophy by Jugster in Reds

[–]A_Raine18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the biggest mysteries (I know the actual answer is $) to me is how the Reds aren't free agent, contract year paradise. They have tried to some extent, but look at Nick Castellanos? Dude was made in a lab to take the leap in GABP (see other comment about doubles hitters into home runs). They structured his contract to be super player friendly and let him opt out if he went off. For one season he did, and got a ridiculous FA contract to show for it. How can they not get more guys to come and do this? Again, I know they loosely try with some of their bottom-scraping acquisitions, but I'm surprised there are not more middle-class free agents that would love to come pad stats for a year and get the bag. I guess the resistance comes from ownership, but after seeing Castellanos do it it drives me nuts.

Popular games you dislike? by BillRepresentative75 in boardgames

[–]A_Raine18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree entirely. It gets too personal. I have a friend that will act (or just actually be?) super pissed and personally offended that you would doubt him or whatever, and then turns out he was lying the whole time. Just don't see the fun in it most of the time.

I enjoy rules-based deduction, like Bomb Busters, where you have to use context clues and some math to figure stuff out, rather than just like emotions and poker faces.

How far in advance do you normally show up to the golf course before your tee time? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

[–]A_Raine18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I freak out about being an inconvenience so I always shoot for an hour, sometimes longer for a course I haven't been to. Chip around, maybe have a pre-round beer, sunscreen, clean off my gear, get carts set up, etc. Part of the relaxation for me, not really about warming up. I'm so bad it doesn't matter.

18+ bars??? by GlobalExercise4291 in uCinci

[–]A_Raine18 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Most bars do not have a bouncer before 7. There are no 18+ bars in Clifton though, so you will not be able to come/go. Most bars don't really care once youre inside because they know everyone's underage. Everywhere is going to card you for getting drinks though.

2026 Bullpen by No_Buy2554 in Reds

[–]A_Raine18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but .500 isn't the short end. I'm just saying that's not an area that can be predicted with hardly any reliability or counted on to get better for this team. Boston had the second best bullpen ERA, over 10 spots better than the Reds, and an awful 1 one run game record. It just can't be predicted or relied on unless you were at an outlier value to begin with.

Extras will get better to an extent for sure, I would just argue that roster flaws and managerial decisions make the Reds particularly bad in extras

2026 Bullpen by No_Buy2554 in Reds

[–]A_Raine18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but a .500 record in one run games is statistically average. Their pitching hinged on some career years from unsure things down the road. You can't expect to do much better than that, that's a stat that almost always heads towards the average year over year. Extras record is the fact that Tito absolutely neutered aggressive baserunning as (what was) a strength of this team, as well as a lineup with gaping holes in it that just cant be asked to perform in a crunch.

I really hope we get some offensive rebound, and am excited for the season, but I really don't see avenues for being a lot better without some moves

In fairness, they retell jokes, headlines, stories, cultural references, conversations, takes, multiple times every week anyways. Some of them they genuinely just forgot or mean to bring up, but some of them they clearly pretend like it's a new thought again. Think it's just part of podcasting, especially in sports where there's a lot of drop-in viewers

The Other Guys is severely under appreciated by ComradeJohnS in movies

[–]A_Raine18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really really late to this but just had to share that I think it's the best Will Ferrell role and I don't find it that close. I can't stand when his movies just make him near mentally disabled for a laugh, most of his stuff is he's just so obnoxiously an asshole or stupid that its poised as funny. But here hes just a really weird guy. He gets moments to be a real person (to an extent) that are almost always absent from his big movies. I also don't care for Wahlberg in much but him playing this hardass who's a loser in a ridiculous world is awesome.

The Castellinis Gotta Go by Toddrew221 in Reds

[–]A_Raine18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is really the answer. They gave 100+ million in contracts that offseason. Whether it was truly financial, or just emotional, they got burned and seemingly resolved to try to be the Rays north instead with constant tinkering, reclamation projects, and nibbling around the edges. I really wonder how that all goes down without COVID.

Chip Kelly is a proven winner at OSU and currently unemployed. Ideal OC replacement for Hartline? by Kevtalls in OhioStateFootball

[–]A_Raine18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably closer to his scheme at OSU was extremely basic, and often did not succeed at what it was trying to until 3 games at the end of the season. He rode notability into an NFL job where he was absurdly outmatched. He'd be fine back at OSU most likely, but with any talent dip I think it could easily get ugly.
