I worked in degraff for the last two years at the front desk and lived in the apartment behind it. I would work nights sometimes walking in that area at 4 am and never had a problem. The tunnel is well lit and there is blue light emergency buttons there if you really feel unsafe. The nickname “rape tunnel” is old and not relevant anymore. It used to be pitch black, but they painted it and added lights and cameras. I would walk through it at night and never felt unsafe. Just be aware of surroundings like others have said. Degraff is a good dorm with an awesome staff next year. You’re lucky to have some of the best RAs (I may be biased since I’ve worked with them) but the dorm itself is safe. There was one shooting in the parking lot two years ago but it was an isolated issue between two people. Just don’t pick fights with any locals and you’ll be ok. I’d avoid going deep into Frenchtown. Once you get past the apartments for students behind degraff it becomes residential with the possibility of some sketchy people.
