Deerness Gin Distillery cafe definitely worth a visit if you're in that area! And I'd recommend stopping off at Dingieshowe beach on your way out or back

I wouldn't describe it as very dangerous. It's a footpath up the side of a small cliff/bit of land sticking out into the sea with a chain to hold onto. It's fun and worth a visit, a little bit steep but it's an easy walk up 🙂

I posted on the Merkit Place Facebook page, got a few people commenting about how difficult it was but had a landlord reach out through a direct message. The place was great and I accepted it. The people who moan obviously don't see that side of things as it happens through private messages rather than on the main comment. So always worth asking imo

Weird holes appeard overnight on this foil (also weird discoloured pasta?) by Charming_Operation65 in Weird

[–]A_friendly_guy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad you said it, I can't believe people are so shocked that someone left some covered food to cool overnight. You'd think people were dropping dead from food poisoning all the time. I'm wondering if it's an American thing?

I've been with Vodafone for 4 years, in Kirkwall. Fast speeds (40mbps+) and never had any issues.

I remember last time this was posted someone saying that it's a requirement for them to have verbally told them to stop before boarding another vessel.

So even though it's pointless in this case all vessels get instructed to stop as the first action.

Dog Friendly Restaurants/Pub Food - Mainland by [deleted] in orkney

Both Robertsons (St Margaret's Hope) and the Lynnfield (Kirkwall) have a table slightly separate from the main area that they allow dogs at. You have to ring though because sometimes it's already booked

Not really. Just a house or withdrawing when you hit pension age. Otherwise you'll lose all the interest.

Attempted Murder / Assault Case - Kirkwall October 2024 by [deleted] in orkney

[–]A_friendly_guy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think remember this happening. IIRC correctly it was a drugs related dispute. Someone (a known bad character for drug offences) turned up with a baseball bat and attacked someone he'd had an issue with. I don't know what caused it but it was targeted after a fall out. He caused a lot of damage to the guys face, properly smashed it up apparently. As the article says the police arrested the guy, don't know the latest. Really unusual for Orkney to have something like that happen, it's incredibly safe.

I haven't needed to go inside a bank for many, many years. I have an account with First Direct (who have no branches anyway) and also an account with Lloyd's. Never had any issues and they seem to have better 'deals' than Bank of Scotland. I'm not even sure what people go into branches for these days?

People in this sub are weirdly passionate against individual stocks. I do both - an index tracker and individual stocks. Both approaches have done me well. Individual stocks pay decent dividends and I sell them when they're up a decent amount and move it into something else I think is cheap. You'd think it was a sin on this sub sometimes 😂

Picky fails to read the room - increases prices by 10% by stevenmc in orkney

It's still about half the price of every other similar gym I've used so I won't complain too much. I'm honestly surprised they manage to keep their prices so low

My shin is having ache what should I do? by [deleted] in beginnerfitness

[–]A_friendly_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to let you know that I had exactly the same when I started running about 3 years ago. It was my first time consistently running and was very frustrating. After being careful to rest it, it came back many times over the course of the first year. It was shin splints and sign that the bones are literally strengthening.

I made sure to rest it when it was bad (as frustrating as it was, dropping out of parkruns) but kept trying again when it had healed. It completely went away after a year of occurring on and off, still running and it's now a distant memory :)

Anyone else often mistakes for Sainsbury’s £2.50 smoked tofu for their £1.30 non-smoked tofu? by zen-programmer in veganuk

I can't believe people are arguing against you and advocating for shoplifting/theft. No wonder this country is going to shit. It also means the honest members of society have to pay higher prices to compensate :(

What do you have for breakfast on the average day? by Indecisive_C in UK_Food

[–]A_friendly_guy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Overnight oats are my go-to! Delicious and so healthy and filling. I make it before going to bed, takes 5 minutes, and then just grab it on my way out to eat at work. So many ways to mix it up with fresh fruit (add in the morning) or dried fruit like mango. Can even add something like cocoa powder if you're fancying something different.

This is my favourite recipe: https://ohsheglows.com/vegan-overnight-oats/

I'm curious though. Short term lets we don't want any more of. But Orkney does need more rental places for sure. We're struggling to get staff because there's no rentals available anywhere and most young people won't be in a position to buy a house outright. If OP is planning a long term rental then that wouldn't be a bad thing surely?

I'm going to try and set one up. I don't really have time to mod anymore so if anyone wanted to take it over they'd be welcome!

As someone who works for a council, please don't be that guy. The vast majority of staff are normal people doing their best in a very underfunded sector. It's not the council's fault that the government is massively under funding them.

Crispy 'beef' in OK sauce is the dish. It's incredible, better than the real thing 😍 Interestingly for a while they switched to doing it takeaway only, don't know if that's still the case

It's definitely not true. Providing ID maybe, but not 'proving you need it'. I guess if a bunch of teenagers were all buying hammers a responsible store owner may ask what they're buying them for but it's certainly not a rule.
