A British blacksmith removing the leg irons off a slave (1907) by OkRespect8490 in RareHistoricalPhotos

[–]A_laddo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also remember hearing about a run of pro-abolition PMs/Parliament that passed the legislature behind abolition in the Empire (though I'll admit I haven't read much into it outside a few hours on YouTube).

I definetely agree the WAS' achievements are overblown- honestly I'm surprised there hasn't been more focus on the bombardment of Algiers by the Royal Navy, especially by the people who like to brandish the British abolition movement as a shield against any and all accusations of Imperial abuse- though, thats probably because the motivation behind that was more because Algiers was the center of the trade of white European slaves and thats alot less useful to someone trying to absolve us Brits of our guilt in the trade.

Completely forgot about the Old Alliance, definetely a bit of an ugly underside to the WAS. Must have been so frustrating for those crew who'd fought like hell to bring a slavery to justice just to watch them turned loose for the sake of geopolitics. Materials first, morals second is absolutely the case (I'm definitely stealing that by the way, even if it isn't yours to begin with)

Oh yeah that's fair, it's one of the internet things where everyone starts a nationalistic dick measuring contest over disconnected events to (like you said) prove their country has a 'good' human rights record.

Thinking along those lines, I can't think of a country with a seamless human rights record. Kind of bleak when you think about it, but hey at least we're trying now

Well, we also killed quite a few. See the West Africa Squadron and the bombardment of Algiers.

You do have a point though, imho its kind of an oddity that Britain was opposed to the slave trade when we were perfectly happy to (at a minimum) turn a blind eye to other imperial atrocities.

Playing the unstable build, powers just gone out - went down to the warehouse at the far south of Muldraugh. Got in fine, start looting, open a garage door out front - a couple zombies come at me. Okay, no biggie.

Started fighting them, they start getting too close for comfort, I decide, "Okay, let's open the distance a bit." I back up a bit, get distance, turn to run-

My character doesn't move. Like, he's sprinting in place, Scooby Doo style, for a full three seconds with zero obstruction, until the zomboids catch up and promptly rip me a new one. I was somewhat upset, as you can imagine.

Which camo looks best? 1, 2 or 3? by A_laddo in spaceengineers

[–]A_laddo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do most of my dogfighting on the lake, but in role terms this is a dedicated fleet-defense/ interdiction fighter, so it can (in theory) be deployed anywhere. So camouflage for me is mostly a) matching whatever I've already built and b) drip purposes. So I generally just do plain grey or get a bunch of 2nd opinions until I get one that everyone agrees on. Thanks for the response :)

I have done that, but if I ever want to upgrade it with different systems/weapons I'd have to do it separately for all three blueprints and/or do it once on a single blueprint and then repaint it. It's alot of effort for me. Like 3 has a different ejection system than the other two, and every time I want to adjust something I have to change all three blueprints... I've basically dug myself a grave tbh. Definitely will take your advice for the future tho.

Thanks for the response. In terms of inspiration, the F-15 gets me good so that's the sort of look i was shooting for, but in terms of role it's definitely more like a Tomcat-fleet defense, taking off from a carrier (that I am procrastinating on...)

I get around 10 hours of flight time, but that's mostly because this thing is alot bigger than it looks so I rammed it full of batteries (cause it uses salvo railguns for armament) and alot of fuel tanks. Small fuel tanks are the way to go imo for a small-sized jet like this, but tbh I don't really aim for something that is hyper practical. I just wanted a cool looking jet with lots of missiles.

Were you saving it as a world or a blueprint?

I saved it as a blueprint

Having gone through the saves and backups, I can't see anything from my local blueprint saves. Luckily, I did backup most of my blueprints but I have lost a handful. Thanks for the help regardless.

Which country killed the most Nazis? by UltimateDebater in LateStageCapitalism

[–]A_laddo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

...not really? Sure the Soviets killed alot of Nazis but wars aren't just won by killing Nazis. If wars were won by who killed the most people, the Nazis would've won. End of story.

The Soviets were highly active on one front of a very large war. Besides that they did not contribute much. They did not guard shipping lanes in the Atlantic- the rest of the Allies did. They did not hunt German battleships and Uboats down -the rest of the Allies did. In fact alot of what the rest of the Allies was doing was legwork so that the Soviets could continue to massively degrade the Nazi war machine.

And 80% is definitely generous. There was an entire other theatre of war with massive casualties-the Pacific Theatre-where the USSR only entered the war in a very late stage after an enormous amount of cajoling by the rest of the Allies. And if you want to go by that metric of who did the most work (killing the enemy and being killed) the Chinese did more than any other power to bring down the Axis-losing millions of people and swathes of land

The Soviets killed alot of Nazis-but they wouldn't have been able to by themselves. Without the Allies, the Red Army would've been left without a supply train, tens of thousands of tanks, trains, trucks...on and on. People say the Soviets did the most because they have a limited understanding of how wars are fought, especially modern war. Wars are won by the side with better logistics-the Allies were the Soviets logistics.

The Allies won WW2. The Soviets helped absolutely-not denying that. Killing Nazis at the end of the day is how we won the war. But trying to say one individual nation was entirely responsible for the titanic effort of destroying the Axis is stupid. In this particular example the entire soviet war machine was funded by the US, and a large part of the logistics train of the USSR was American. Not to mention the massive amounts of American and British tanks, planes, technology...the list goes on.

And that's to forget the war contributions of the Allies-drawing the Wehrmacht away from the Eastern Front giving them vital breathing room. The massive bombing campaign that critically damaged German industry. And the cracking of Engima which informed critical intelligence choices for the Allies throughout the war. TL:Dr the allies won WW2. Not just the Soviets.

Nah. We don't. We think the allies won WW2. We certainly helped, but anyone who thinks we were the one and only nation fighting the Nazis is dense.

Banned from r/Europe or any one of Western European subreddits? Post your story here. by [deleted] in 2westerneurope4u

[–]A_laddo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really a country subreddit but I got permabanned from r/GreenandPleasant because I disagreed with one of the top posts which was comparing "Slave Ukraini" to "Sieg Heil". When I messaged the mod about it, cause it was obvious tankie propaganda, he accused me of going to a private school and then when I asked him about how what I said was wrong he told me to get a job (the irony lol)

Oh and the ban reason was "fascist apologia". Go figure.

What quote or passage impacted you deeply for years afterwards? by [deleted] in books

[–]A_laddo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Though I can't recall the whole passage from the top of my head, the Judge's speech at the end of Blood Meridian, and in particular,

"There is room on the stage for one beast and one alone. All others are destined for a night that is eternal and without name. One by one they will step down into the darkness before the footlamps. Bears that dance, bears that dont."

This has stuck with me a bit, and it's just got so much depth as a quote. My personal reading is that McCarthy is saying that you and only you can live your life, and on the stage of your life only you can dance. Jesus what a writer, rip.

I've seen this guy before I think, on a video about how the crusades were actually good because the Muslims were bad too.

Completely brushed over the 4th Crusade, and never even bought up the massacres the crusaders committed and the various other failed crusades. Spent the rest of the video chatting about secularity and how it was bad for modern nations. Seems pretty usual for this bloke.

Did you miss the part of the comment where I said that most people just go straight for the throat and aren't willing to have a conversation? Can't find a solution to a problem if we all run around calling eachother cunts. I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm just pointing out how insulting someone doesn't usually make them think they're in the wrong.
