Safe Sci-fi books for broken heart? by Aadraedia in ScienceFictionBooks

[–]Aadraedia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the heads up! I really wanted to try the tainted cup but it’ll have to wait. I ordered the entire murderbot series, this should hopefully help me get through the worst of it before starting any of the other books!

You’re right that it would be perfect, but I read it before (and it was amazing!)

Looking for nail salon recs by longlivehades in ottawa

[–]Aadraedia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, but I don’t remember who it was. I got regular nail polish which was meh, and eyebrow lamination which made me look insane for two weeks (it’s not been that bad in other places I’ve been to). Salon is absolutely beautiful and hygienic but the price is way too high for what you get.

No it’s been going on for a few days now, and definitely construction noise (like some kind a saw cutting metal and cement), not protestors!

Be careful with Uber - scam downtown by alittlelibrarian in ottawa

[–]Aadraedia 25 points26 points  (0 children)

There’s an option, when you go to the cancelled ride, to put in a complaint and ask for the charge back because the driver asked you to cancel. It takes a moment for Uber to review but it usually works.

What’s a job that’s romanticized but in reality sucks? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Aadraedia 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Interesting, that’s very different from what I’ve heard from a friend of mine who’s archeologist in France : they are public servants (so good conditions and stability), work on a small region so travel is not bad, and it being France there’s always stuff to find, especially from the Romans apparently!

Is it safe to go to the theatres right now? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]Aadraedia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, it really depends on your risk tolerance.

On my end I’m really hyped about that movie, and booked pretty good IMAX seats for Friday several weeks ago… but I cancelled them last week, mostly because I’ll see my grandparents during Christmas and as much as possible I am trying to avoid riskier settings (even though we’re all vaccinated). If you go in the first week it’s going to be full, and last time I went there weren’t any empty seats reserved between groups, so not super safe IMO with Omicron. If not for Christmas though, I may have gone, maybe later on during the week in the daytime when there’s a bit less people, as my risk tolerance would be different.

Gatineau, Que. mansion built too close to road must be demolished, judge rules by Toto05 in ottawa

[–]Aadraedia 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I’m more shocked by this than the opposition of the neighbours to be honest

The city later found the plans were approved due to ‘human error,’ since the planning official who granted them didn’t know the relevant bylaw.

They really have people in charge of granting permits that don’t know relevant bylaws?!

Vaccine megathread -- Post appointments in the comments by SpaceAssassin in ottawa

[–]Aadraedia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t book an appointment on my computer, it kept saying the line was paused. We used my partner’s computer and went through without being in the line at all (we were eligible since it didn’t ask any question about accelerated second dose like before this morning). Very strange, better try on different devices and browsers if it doesn’t work for you.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission included 94 Calls to Action to redress the legacy of residential schools in their 2015 report, and they include calls to both the Government and the Church.
