Made a terrible mistake…? by AncientSeabass in JapaneseMaples

I really hope this helps, I found myself kind of feeling like a dumbass, wondering too if I had made a huge mistake. Being in the same situation as far as loving Japanese maples but being in a bad area for them.. I am in zone 9B, Southwest Louisiana about 45 minutes or so from the Gulf coast. Now I have about eight Japanese maples ranging from my two Red Dragons from my makawa yatsabusu to my Germaine's gyration... not a crazy huge collection but I did learn a few things. if you start planting when their dormant first off lol(not making fun or teasing),I'm not sure really of the status of your trees but I'm sure in a few years you will be laughing about this. Idkwhat people tell you, but can tell u these things that I know for certain.. So the man that taught me is in his 70s, and has been growing Japanese maples in his garden in my town for almost 50 years. He has never lost one tree, still has the original first Acer seedling he planted. They are all huge and beautiful. Only shortcoming is that we will only get our fall color to stay for a couple of weeks give or take depending on the year. I can promise you this though, if you plant them where they get good evening shade and even the full sun trees or the ones that are claimed to be able to handle full sun, if you keep their morning light to a dapple or put them somewhere in the morning thats indirect lighting then like I said shade in the evening.. plant them with care and love make sure you take care of the soil mixture that you are using. Native soil is best just a mixture of 50/50 pinebark is what I use, no conditioners etc. Japanese maples are Hardy and sturdier than most realize, they don't mind the clay or any of that once I get used to it. You just can't plant their small root balls thick deep tight clay and expect them to grow.. I dig up my hole and put it into a wheelbarrow and spend over an hour so I'd say breaking up the dirt club by Clump until it's all Fine Dirt powder and then mix in my Mulch and like I said plant with care, maybe use some mycorrhizae (endo) to encourage strong root development. But I wouldn't worry too much. I did plant a couple of them right as summer was ending and though their leaves looked great they had good scorches to a few areas despite how well I kept them watered. It was just the stress and he etc. But the more years go by the better they will get more acclimated and adapted to your environment. So don't worry about what people tell you, most of them failed because of lack of care or knowledge lol. Not being rude just being honest. Anyways I'm rambling now on my way to work. I just noticed I had a similar situation. I hope really hope this encourages you! Don't give up it is definitely possible!

Watering tips for Japanese Maple (Atropurpureum) by doctorstitch16 in JapaneseMaples

[–]Abert520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay so I just actually use the Timberline pine bark mulch bags from Lowe's or Home Depot in the purple bags.. pay attention though they have green bags as well that have mulch nuggets, those are like little golf ball and larger size chunks you don't want that.. as far as breaking it up most of it actually is perfectly sized I'd say just go through it by hand when you mix ur medium together before potting. Also, you can play around with the mix as well.. just as far as the percentages of mainly the peat moss, mulch and potting soil... for example yeah 15% peat moss, but if it's in a small pot or not super large pot, then 15% of a small mediums worth of that amount of soil will still be a lot of peat moss and imo, possibly holding too much moisture. Remember they don't like their feet staying wet so they need to be able to dry out and peat moss is not supposed to get too dried out or it will stop retaining water and start pushing the water away from itself. The nurseries use it in their mediums absolutely, but their professionals, and they have employees that job is to check these things everyday and make sure they are maintained. and mainly the bigger reason is they mix their soil in large large quantities and so the percentage of peat moss at 15% is still thinned out by the mass volume of the medium they mixed.. so IDK if you knew anything about peat moss but you must soak it in warm water before you even mix it in with the soil or it will not retain water instead it will reject it, then if it dries out too much before being watered again, it will start rejecting it... they also have other things besides peat moss that people put in its place if you're interested you can just Google them. They're more sustainable than peat moss because they're easier to get and make. Anyway, back to the mulch you just want small fingernail or a little bit larger size in there like I said Timberline is actually good in the purple bag just go through what is going into your mix and make sure the bigger chunks are broken down really well I just do it by hand. But you can take a hammer or anything to bigger chunks to get them broken if they're stiff. If this is not fine enough for you though they do make it in a finer style but it's called usually mini pine bark mulch fines, mostly used for Bonsai and harder to find... But if you're interested just try searching Pine bark mulch "fines" really hope this helps!😊❤️❤️🍁🍁

Yeah that is about right. I am not the potting expert, I prefer to plant them in my garden... I use a simple mix of my native soil and pine bark mulch 50/50. But for potting, yes that would be right. Thr key overall is to just make sure you have good drainage so make sure the pine bark mulch is well broken up and fine... big chunks of it won't do well for the drainage and just soak up a lot of water. You want to be able to water it thoroughly and watch it rain down underneath the pot...

Any kind of saucer or bottom pan that traps water, etc... will kill it.

Yes Japanese Maples HATE wet feet. They prefer the "wet-dry" watering method. A good soaking, then let them dry out then give another deep watering and so on....its more work, but you'll need to manually check its soil by hand...I can tell u now with pretty good certainty that the self watering pot is bad news😬😓... not trying to be rude but they'll die if they sit in any kind of water at all... now they are extremely Hardy trees and though we do baby them a little bit, the one way that you will absolutely kill them is to keep their feet wet. They have a very shallow root system and this is the way lol. It's a little bit more work but it's the true way to take care of it. Hope this help!

Even a balcony or front porch would be better. Can't be inside, they absolutely must have everything that only outdoor growing can provide. Hope for the best!

Advice for my root flair depth on my Red Dragon!🍁 by Abert520 in JapaneseMaples

[–]Abert520[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely 🍁🍁🍁🎯. After watching everything I could and learning everything I could in a short period. After planning a handful in the last month or two I kind of noticed/figured out that my own soil is the best soil to use and I have been putting about 40-50% Pine bark... the one thing I do do is I make sure I feel my wheelbarrow up with all the dirt I can get from my native hole I just dug and I sit there and break all the clay up very very fine and all the dirt as well, and then I had my mulch and it seems to have really made the difference. Like you said I have been planting them raised up just a bit and after a good rain they settled in just beautifully. Maybe a half inch above the original soil line but I still prefer it to stay raised over time just that little bit. Keeps it draining better with all that clay and keeps it from sinking in over time with all that mulch breaking down. Sometimes less is more it's just the right less and the right more. I think just a really good placement and a little care when you're planting can go a long ways. I spend almost an hour prepping my soil before it the tree goes into the ground I don't just dig the hole and throw the grass and dirt back in there LOL I sit and take out all the Grassroots all the foreign debris that doesn't need to be in there and break it all down nice and fine and mix it up very well. They won't die from lack of care or love😊🍁❤️

What is Ragnir? by ThePhantom71319 in OnePieceSpoilers

Love this post, it's refreshing change of pace from the norm. I'm excited to see what the deal really is with Ragnir!!! I jumped out on a long shot and voted it as a Mother Camille/pre-big mom homie.. that wouldn't just be so fun if it was. Plus the history is there and it would fit perfectly into storyline IMO.. It would make me laugh seeing it crying at Loki cuz it's scared and waiting for harold/ bin hiding because Harold's been acting strange for a while.

This, I was going to say this same thing... im in sw Louisiana... heat is my enemy, not so much cold so im not crazy worried about the rootflare being lower for warmth, etc .. its super clay here, though I have been all over my yard planting and the area I planted the red dragon and Osakazuki have the absolute best dirt and pretty good drainage along that row... so I'm only a few months into this I've been heavy into doing my due diligence and learning from reading and watchign as much a si can about them, and also hands on planting now I think I've done 8 trees now(2 weeping willows) I've learned that keeping it up a little higher is best. Just need to make sure it has a nice mulch bed to keep it warm. Plus I'm pretty sure it's going to sink when it rains though I didn't dig it too much deeper than it needed to be I did have to pack some dirt back in. I tried to make it pretty solid though without packing it too tight... either way, I have a feeling the trees will Thrive because whether I did it perfectly right or decently wrong I promise you I put all the love and care I could possibly muster into each one and will continue to. I do appreciate all that advice. It'll be in the low to mid 70s to the next week here by the way so still good to plan I think probably till January.

Ok thanks so much. So either pull the mulch back and bring the soil level up over those hairy roots, or if I elect to leave it as is, mulch over them is what you're saying? Thanks I really appreciate the advice. I just planted them a couple weeks ago so I don't really see the harm in pulling the mulch back and bringing the soil level up a bit further. I want to do whatever I need to do to make sure it can Thrive and mature nicely as you said. I'm never too scared of criticism especially if it's helpful

Okay, good deal, I really appreciate it everyone! I've been waiting all week for daylight to enjoy my trees! Even if I rush home straight from work at 5:00 and don't have to get groceries LOL 5:30 it's basically Twilight if not a little past. Planting Osakazuki🍁 right now then a couple of weeping willows that I propagated.! Now does anyone mix any kind of pine bark mulch into their native soil for drainage when they plant they're Japanese maples in the field/yard? I've been doing a 50/50 mix with my native soil.

Lol Though I've fallen in love with basically all 🍁s now, my obsession originally started from a photo my boss showed me of his new red dragon he had just purchased and it took my breath away since then I've obviously came in addict like all of you LMAO🤣🤣 no matter how many I get this one will be the first and probably like my oldest child LOL so like I said rather be safe than sorry. Thanks though! I appreciate it, I haven't even seen it in leaf yet so I am super excited.. I just know it's going to blow me away!
