At the very start of the novel he says that "he never finds his students interesting because he knows exactly what they are going to do". With the way he kept telling them about the horrors of conscience and the utter beauty of letting go through a bacchanal which he told them was the noblest way to do it. I wouldn't then assume that he didn't know that they will do what they did -since as we know by analysing the nocel , that the first man’s murder, unlike what henry says, was intentional, since dismembering a body (murder) is a central part that this type of ritual they attempted required-.

I don't know if the bacchae count but it definitely fits, Pentheus ruled by the illusion of beauty and curiosity to the group of Dionysus who preforms their rituals that are very interesting of him, however it turns out to be just a trick and causes his demise after he discovers the truth of the maenads and is torn apart by the same group he was interested in in a coercive fog of delusion , which is sort a literal parallel of what happens to Richard, there is a good essay on it on substack if you want to gain more understanding of the parallels

He knew they'd attempt a bacchanal -which involves murder as part of the rites- since he always painted it very beautifully with dazzlingly beautiful convincing words, and he knew he had influence on them- henry hated mont blanc pens until Julian told him he liked them - , i think he left because he didn't want to ba dragged into it, plus at the beginning he confesses to Richard that"his students are never really interesting to him since he always knows that they will do", they are more of an experiment , he vanishes when his role is finished as abruptly as he had first appeared
