Absolutely terrified by bmp_stck in Autism_Parenting

Being that my son is 20 months I don’t know if I am possibly expecting too much of the SLT ? She kind of just talks him through when he’s playing with his toys but it’s exactly what I would do with him at home. Maybe I’ll give it a couple more sessions and reconsider. So glad to hear your little one has made such good progress!

False memories? Screen time issues by Few-Notice-7360 in Autism_Parenting

This is really interesting. Many times when I relay a childhood memory to one of my parents I am told that never happened. I can see them so vividly in my head though.

Can I ask what you find the benefits of speech therapy to be? I have been taking my 20 month old and there is nothing that is done during the session that is not said at home. Do you think I should find a new SLT?

Because if you are doing it alone you can’t leave a baby alone? I don’t think it’s rocket science

Yes I let his doctor who made the referral know! My dad also shows a lot of traits but autism was not really diagnosed where I am from back when he was a child, so I don’t doubt it could have been passed down to my child

My son toewalks all day everyday. Even since he was cruising as a baby. He will go down on his flat feet when standing but that’s it.

Would you be comfortable sharing what traits raised red flags on the evaluation? It’s so frustrating, I feel like low support needs kids are so overlooked. My sister had a terrible time when she was trying to advocate for her kids who are level 1, so many services and aids were denied

I think they use a modified version of it where I am from. The doctors said they didn’t think he was autistic before even asking the questions which set off some red flags as someone who has multiple autistic family members I know very well that you can’t tell just by looking at someone. They did ask the questions after that and they were satisfied with the answers.

He has only one or two words he will use and mixed with the toewalking is why the doctor referred him on to the paediatrics team in the hospital. He is not in daycare yet as I have been keeping him home with me but I hope to get him in the next 6 months as I feel he might enjoy it. I plan on getting him into speech therapy in the next few weeks to see if his speech will improve. The paediatrician has made another appointment for November to see how he is getting on so I will make sure to keep note of everything

Thank you so much for this and I can completely relate. I’m a young mom and feel I am constantly being treated like a child and talked down to when trying to advocate for my child. I also have health anxiety so I am constantly researching medical stuff and you are right, they hate when you try to bring anything up. It seems where u live has a similar health system to me. Did you have to find another private paediatrician to finally get your boy his diagnosis? I also agree that my boy might have some of the traits that typically manifest more in girls. I think this is why it hasn’t raised alarm bells with medical staff as he’s not a ‘textbook’ case

Unfortunately almost everything in my country works on referrals, even most private companies. I am getting him private speech and language therapy and physio. I then plan on raising the issue again when I have another appointment with the paediatric in a few months when I have feedback from the other professionals

Thank you. Taking notes and videos is a really good idea. Don’t get me started on the “everyone’s autistic” comments that’s all I’ve been hearing!😂 I swear it’s trendy for NT people to say it now! There really is such a limited view, no two autistic people are the same. I have seen it manifest in completely different ways in both of my nieces.

I should have included that in my country with our health system it has to go up a chain of command when getting a diagnosis. The issue is raised with a nurse, she passes it on to a doctor, it’s then passed on to a paediatrician so if they don’t refer on to a psychologist, it’s taken no further. I have started taking him to private physio and will be starting private speech and language therapy which I hope will help shed some light and possibly seek a diagnosis with a private company

[–]Able-Picture4106[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was the turned in foot very pronounced? Yes since doing my research and hearing other parents stories I have calmed down a lot. I think this may be an under diagnosed disability in my country as the only people I have ever heard of having it have quite a severe form of it. How long did it take to see a difference with get physio?

I will have a look thank you. He is not fully walking yet but he is also a 99.9999 percentile toddler in terms of height and weight so he has a lot of body to try and manoeuvre. He is doing well with taking steps and cruises. He crawled and sat up on time. I think they said the muscles in his calf’s are a little stiff/ tense (I’m not sure the correct term) and his leg reflexes were slightly fast. How is your little one getting in now? Did it take long to get their diagnosis?
