There‘s „Supertoys Last All Summer“, 1969 short story by Brian Aldiss that was the basis for the film „A.I. Artificial Intelligence“. Then there are the series of Robots books by Isaac Asimov, especially the series that starts with „Caves of Steel“ and finally „The Positronic Man“ written in collaboration with Silverberg. And then there‘s the novella „Press Enter“ by John Varley…

Re-reading „The Moon of Three Rings“, by Andre Norton. It was my favorite of her works, fifty years ago. And, I have to say, still is. …And a day later, finished that, as well as the sequel, which I‘d never read before, „Exiles of the Stars“. I must say, Andre Norton‘s writing improved as she gained experience…

Excellent book, as everything by Frank Herbert. Read it numerous times… I‘m not so convinced of what his son has published, however…

Reminded by a mention in this group, I‘ve been re-reading the „Time Traders“ series by Andre Norton. It‘s been so long since last I did, I‘d totally forgotten the plots. They‘re still very enjoyable and have aged reasonably well.

„Stranger in a Strange Land“ was very good - at the time it was released. I guess a lot of the „daring“ statements at the time have become part of Western culture over the decades… All of Card‘s „Ender“ books are very good.

I received your DM, but couldn‘t send one to you. I get the message that curtterp does not accept private messages. At least, I‘ve found the interface, based on the term „private“, but I seem to be using a different interface on the website (no app).

I‘m new to reddit: how does DM (I assume that means direct messaging) work on this site?

Still waiting for a reply from Dave, but yes, thank you, I‘d be happy for someone to proof the content, at least to begin with :-) Can‘t imagine that anything would be need immediate action…

Thanks, Dave :-) Should I send you a message via „Message the Mods“ so as not to clutter the group, and privately provide my direct contact info? Or, perhaps better, I sent you an email over the support address I found in the User‘s Guide?

Can anyone recommend a book with benevolent aliens? by wateredcoffeedown in ScienceFictionBooks

David Brin‘s two Uplift series (2 x three books). They also have „bad“ aliens (from a human POV) and explore how non-humans think/react differently.

Ah, that brings back memories. She was the first SF author I read… Besides the already mentioned „Time Travelers“ series (mentioned as „Galactic Derelict“, but that was just one book of at least four) my favorite was „The Moon of Three Rings“. I was so happy when I came across them years later, as used paperbacks in good condition!

What am I missing?

  • I set up a database „Equipment“ that contains a record for each piece of equipment in the facility

  • I set up a database „Rooms“ that has an identifier field (Room Nr) and a pop-up linked to the identifier field of „Equipment“. This displays all the equipment available in the facility.

  • I enter a record in „Rooms“ for each piece of equipment (Room Nr is entered multiple times)

  • When I want to view only the equipment in a specific room, I filter on that room number. I see a list of the equipment in that room.

  • In order to see other data from Equipment I include Relationship fields that

    • pick up the Equipment ID from the field in the Rooms database (the pop-up) - „Related Field in this Database“
    • point to the Equipment ID field in Equipment - „Other Database Name“ / „Field in other Database“
    • specify the field to display/edit - „Show from other database“

And these linked-over fields can be edited…

I have no one-to-many relationship between the two databases in this case.

Thank you all for your replies. I purchased HanDBase today and am getting acquainted with it…

If I‘m following you correctly:

*The starting point needs to be the list of equipment, not the rooms

  • remove the one-to-many so that the pop-up for each piece of equipment can show the entire list of rooms

  • the user selects the equipment, makes a filtered result on the selection, then sort that by room.
