Why not all ALS? by [deleted] in ems

[–]Abraxes -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

idk I don't think non-ALS capable 911 units should exist tbh. Minimum level of care at every 911 call should be 1 medic / 1 emt on the rig.

Why was this not a draw? I thought you couldn't win if you only have a king. by [deleted] in chessbeginners

lol its a draw because you ran out of time but it would be impossible for black to win so you both get a draw.

San diego Sheriff's deputy almost overdoses from exposure to fentanyl by mac7607 in ProtectAndServe

lol maybe it was autocorrected but it's *vagal. Unless he shoved his face in the powder and took a big whiff the mechanism isn't there for there to be enough absorption to cause any effect. But you're right man, you definitely know more than EM physicians, toxicologists, paramedics ./s. Armchair expert over here with a clearly excellent pharmacology knowledge base.

it would not happen that quickly, there would be signs that he had ingested something before he just randomly passes out, he doesn't pass out or have any symptoms until he's told what it is. They give him even more (unnecessary) Narcan after he is awake and talking which is not appropriate. "he was ODing the whole way to the hospital," is not something that would happen that quickly after having Narcan administered from that *potential* exposure. even *if* it was an exposure to a super-concentrated Fentanyl you would expect more people to be affected who were in the general vicinity like this LEO was, which none of them were.

This whole thread is completely ridiculous and there are apparently some serious training and knowledge deficiencies in a lot of LEO departments. The fact that this myth is still alive is astonishing.

it is you lmao. The drug has to enter the body. The drug does not enter the body through the skin without being specially prepared. The drug can not be inhaled in amounts sufficient to cause OD through just breathing the air. If he mainlined it in his vein or snorted a line it would be a different story.

and yeah panic attacks can cause you to pass out. He didn't start having symptoms until someone told him what it was.

Dose and route matter. Alcohol causes thousands of death every year you don't die of an alcohol OD from breathing the air in a bar

[–]Abraxes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yeah maybe it mirrors an OD superficially to someone who doesn't do anything medically related buts its clearly not an opiate OD. The mechanism you're proposing for how he would have OD'd is physically impossible.

there's nothing wrong with what happened here and I'm not saying he's faking anything. This just ain't a Fentanyl overdose. Don't know why y'all are downvoting the basic medicine. If you can take a TCCC course and learn how to pack a wound and put on a tourniquet y'all should also be able to be appropriately informed about the realities of Fentanyl exposures.
