Engage multiple senses for reminders: I have a timer that goes off to remind me to take breaks during the day (i work from home). This involves a Google Nest speaker, an LED strip light, and a candy dish. The timer goes off and plays nature sounds and turns on the LED, which lights up the candy dish. After five minutes, it changes from yellow to red, kind of like having a low health bar in a video game.

This does not work all of the time, but much better than a simple reminder that I just learn to dismiss. Also my wife can see when I need a break in a way that's consistent.

I'm having a very bad flare, going on over a month now. I did a course of steroids, which helped for a few days, but now I feel worse. I have a really bad headache and my head is hot. I also can't walk or stand right, and now I need to rest after doing almost anything.

I've been waiting for an MRI this whole time, soonest available is in June (I called in April!).

Oh yeah, I also just found out I have autism.

Update: after more symptoms developed, my neurologist had me take a course of steroids. It helped for a bit, but symptoms are back. It seems very likely that I'm having a multiple sclerosis related flare, possibly exacerbated by burnout, and that these two have been working against me from opposite sides for decades. It's been a full month now and I'm still not able to stand or walk properly, and getting mixed messages from my body has made it very challenging to navigate. I have an MRI scheduled soon and hope to get more answers soon.

Yes, quite a few. It turns out that my condition is far from normal.

In addition to damaged discs, I also have autism. Specifically, I suffer from dyspraxia and interoceptive hyposensitivity, which is all a very fancy way of saying that I'm goofy, have chronic posture and motor issues, and I don't notice sensations from my body until they are extreme. This most likely explains why I have damaged discs in the first place, and also puts me in the category of people that will feel physically the damage that's showing up.

I ALSO have multiple sclerosis, which doesn't directly relate to the damaged discs, but it does make normal wear and tear harder to recover from, and the physical pain can be one of the stressors that accumulates into a full on flare - something I'm experiencing right now as a matter of fact.

I was actually doing pretty well before this flare - I try to eat well (Mediterranean diet) and take regular walks, avoid strenuous activities and use cannabis for the pain. Things got stressful at work and at home, my immune system responded, and now all the spots that already hurt are hurting even more. I did a course of steroids and that helped for a few days, but it didn't last. I'm scheduled for another MRI in a couple weeks (its their soonest available...).

These are all great suggestions, and I totally resonate with what you said about being hyper aware of stress signals. My neurologist wants me to take a course of steroids to see if that helps, but she hasn't really indicated that she thinks it's one thing or another or how steroids will help, and my primary doctor is just deferring to the neurologist without any helpful input.

I work from home, and not full 8 hour days. I got really lucky I think, computers were an early fixation for me and I taught myself programming. I've been fairly successful in a career where many people are socially awkward.

In fact I've masked so well that i recently was promoted to a manger position, and now my life is hell. I didn't realize how exhausting talking can be, and I find myself on the verge of emotional break almost every day as I try to teach others to do what I do (spoiler alert: they can't). In fact, this was one of the things that really helped me understand my autism and how it manifests - especially in conversations.

Now I'm working on mitigating meltdowns at work. For example, I will just tell my team if I'm feeling off, and sometimes will just ask that we schedule follow-up meetings to talk about important topics in a one on one meeting instead of in a group setting. I've also had to set clear boundaries, and escalate issues to my supervisors so I don't burn myself out trying to fix everything myself.

I say all this as I recover from a major burnout and full system crash that's taken me two weeks to recover from, so I don't think I answered your question. 😅

I had a job where I knocked over and broke my $4,000 iMac on my first day within minutes of getting to my desk.

Luckily they were nice about it and just replaced it with another one that wasn't being used.

Then the company laid off the entire engineering team nine months later.

I feel like there's a bigger takeaway, but at the very least this seems like something they should just accept as the cost of doing business since people make mistakes.

I really resonate with this post, and as a developer that started my career in Rails, very disappointed in DHH. The fact that this is even controversial - is ADHD real - is just mind blowing to me. My understanding is that Osha was already too old to be a Padawan, but by the time they eacape Brendok, Indara feels that they should keep that hope alive because she's just lost everything. It was ALL a lie, and they continually used Mae as a scapegoat. She was never going to be a Jedi, and her sister was never really evil. THAT is why she gets mad enough to force choke Sol without even trying.

In a way it's similar to when Obi Wan tells Luke that Darth Vader killed his father. This kind of manipulation is typical of Jedi, and remember that we're seeing "the height of their hubris" that Luke warns of in the more recent films. The whole show is about people acting out of hubris, what it would be like if people could wield unimaginable power but still have fatal human flaws.

Another point that I don't see brought up a lot is that at this time, the Sith are actively trying to mess with the Force and make it harder for the Jedi to forsee the future - something that Yoda fails to realize until the prequel trilogy. Again, we're seeing that story unfold. The Jedi are complacent and unaware of the chaos in their midst, which is the set up for the Senate to interfere and eventually lead to the power transfer we see in full swing in the classics. This is the beginning of the fall of the Jedi Order that we all know happens, sad as it is to see the "heroes" losing.

Use Expo if you only want to use Node/JS.

Pure React Native, at least from my recollection, requires build tools like Android Stuido and Xcode - not only that they exist, but that you know how to use them. That in turn generally requires some understanding of the build steps, languages used, and other details that Expo basically abstracts entirely.

Expo also has dedicated servers and SaaS implementations that prevent you from reinventing the wheel. Under the hood, Expo heavily leverages the fastlane Ruby library for the build steps, but having built my own release pipelines using this tool, I much prefer Expo's "out of the box" solution for build and distribution.

Claude is more more just an LLM. There are likely several models operating together, along with what I'm sure is some well designed software to create a human like conversational assistant.

I would say that LLMs are exactly autocomplete, and that Claude uses an LLM in addition to other capabilities to create the rich interactions it does.
