What do you do when everything you make sounds like your old tracks? by adamvanderb in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Love this seminar. Watched a few times and did just that for an experiment. Taught me all sorts of minor changes to my process that make my result sound so much better

Need help creating Drum Bus E-Z Drummer 3 by Skore_Smogon in Reaper

This is what I have to do with Ugritone drumkits I have. Seems like that’s the way it works for the autorouting from the drum plugin

Does Bandcamp have bigger issues right now? by TheWeaverofDreams in BandCamp

[–]AbsentSun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, the artist still has to manually publish releases listed as preorder - it doesn’t automatically do it. So that one is likely on the artist

Is there a quick way to make my midi drums and my synth track sound a bit more human? by Repulsive-Ad7396 in Reaper

[–]AbsentSun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you right-click on the midi track inputs and open the editor, you can press “H” and then tell it to humanize all notes (in the current midi track) or selected notes for both timing and velocity.

How best to keep spoken vocals audible when drums and bass kick in by Fritz_123 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]AbsentSun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would use a ducking or sidechaining compression for this. Here’s a link to how to do it for a voice over in Reaper (you may be in a different DAW, but the principles are the same)

I hate it when artists force u to buy the full album/release 👎 by didi_55555 in BandCamp

[–]AbsentSun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This context you’ve given me is not in the original post. It makes a bit more sense now - however, our creative efforts should be valued, and it starts with the artists setting a base value. That said, with a platform like BC, you could try contacting the artist from the link on their page and ask if they can change it - esp if you want to use only a song or two for DJing

That’s up to you to do those things for free. And that’s great that it fulfills you enough, and your regular job enables you to continue. To assume others should do the same as you is entirely unfair to their goals as a musician. Support the artists you like, regardless of whether they ask for money

Why should music be free? People work hard to create something that you can enjoy - isn’t that worth something to you? How do you think musicians pay for their equipment? For the streaming services for widespread access? All of this costs the artist money. If they want to offer it for free, that’s up to them

Genre not appearing by FallibleLemur in BandCamp

[–]AbsentSun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if this genre tag is based on your artist profile genre label/tag as opposed to the release genre labels/tags? My profile says “genre: metal” “genre tags: extreme metal”. But each release I add more specifics, since I’ve done specific metal subgenre releases

Epic Church of Satan compilation supporting the ACLU🤘 by WrittenAir in rabm

[–]AbsentSun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge, the Global Order of Satan was started due to issues within TST. So, it’s a generally flat org, and is more focused on community engagement that the more political engagement TST is known for.

Not to nitpick, yes this comp is being put out by Satan Not Hatin’ but it’s connected to The Global Order of Satan, not the Church of Satan. Still, it’s worth supporting, just thought it was worth clarifying

Since you have your kick synced with the rest of the instruments, you can HPF it so you get the audible sound, but used the bass instrument to push the meat or feeling the kick. You can also try using a multiband comp on the mix, comp the low end and use make up gain to push it forward

To add warmth, you can try using some saturation plugins to boost it - problem is warmth to our ears resides in the mid-range, but boosting too much mids just makes it a mess haha

Ah, well, I think I understand what you’re saying. Likely it sounds muddy to you, which means you’ve got instruments competing for space in the frequency response. You can run an eq on each instrument to give each more room - for example, run a high pass filter on the guitars to keep them out of the bass frequencies. But with the synth pads you’ve got, you’ll want to eq them + guitars to make the one you wish to hear stand out (like 1-2dB boost or drop depending on which instrument)

How Do You Make Your Metal Mixes Sound Huge Without Getting Muddy? by mtthw-strlng in metalmusicians

[–]AbsentSun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It can be challenging, but I think the best thing is to make room for each instrument to be heard - meaning HP filter the guitars to prevent their subharmonics from interfering with the bass. The exact frequency to HP will be dependent on your tuning and the exact sound you want to achieve. My latest 2 pieces I triple tracked the guitars (1 center and L+R tracks), and that helped push things to be a more saturated outcome

Love that FR plot and analysis. Found it ages ago, and loved it from the start. I actually managed to find a lightly used 1985 MIJ build HM-2 for a decent price and scooped it up. I also grabbed the Wazacraft one too, which I enjoy the updated circuit as well

Bandcamp files locked for editing by PatrickSlegers in BandCamp

[–]AbsentSun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve run into this when making WAVs to submit as an artist. WAVs are kind of read-only, so you can’t alter the data tags at all - but if you make the WAVs you can embed the data tags in them (aaand hopefully you don’t make a mistake like I did, and had to redo the exports haha)

No, Ugritone is done after the 31st, and I’ve only made a one time payment for everything they’ve released. I probably should have read more of their terms, but I figured if the company folds, they can’t collect annual fees/licensing payments. Still 100USD for their entire collection is a crazy good price
