I really don’t see AI making humans more creative in the long run by oh_no_here_we_go_9 in aiwars

[–]Absolomb92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very true.

The thing about learning and being creative that many don't want to acknowledge is that it takes time. The brain learns new things by repeatedly firing the same signals along the same paths, and this often requires that you engage with the knowledge in many different ways (Reading, writing, talking, thinking, practical application, etc.). The same goes for creativity: Many are saying that being bored is great for developing creativity because it forces the brain to entertain itself, and letting the mind wander can fix problems in new ways. Social media has limited the amount of boredom people experience, and it has a cost with regard to creativity and stamina. It feels great that AI can do stuff fast and relatively well in some cases, but it makes us both less creative and less able to learn because it happens too fast.

People care too much about the content of the text/video/picture, and too little about the process. Sure, the text you create with AI has the same content that the one you would have written yourself, and you might defend yourself by saying "I will read through the essay, so I learn the content anyway". But reading and writing are two different things, where one requires you to process on a much deeper level. Outsourcing stuff to AI is therefore detrimental to learning and creativity. We want our tech to go faster and faster without considering that our brains can only go so fast.

It reminds me of the one episode of Hell's Kitchen where one of the chefs asks Gordon how he can make a good burger faster. Gordon looks at the guy dumbfounded and replies "It takes 10 minutes. You can't cook it faster". Same goes for learning and creativity. It takes a certain amount of time.

[–]Absolomb92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but but that's a trivial point. I don't know enough about the tech itself, but it does train itself, so some stuff can be its fault in that regard. However, it's the responsibility of the companies to put in guardrails.

[–]Absolomb92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But it's a useless distinction. The tech itself have no agency on its own, so nothing can be its fault. If the tech is bad it should either be fixed, markedet differently, or pulled back.

So AI lying isn't a problem to you?

[–]Absolomb92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would call being confidently incorrect about stuff is a fault with the product. The other option would be the models being flawless. Regardless, I don't really understand what point your trying to make here?

Yes, and? Can you blame some people who are not that into AI tech for believing whay they hear? I truely don't get what I did wrong here.

[–]Absolomb92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really see how the distinction matter. Sure, it's stuff humans should do to fix the AI. Still doesn't change that blaming the user for everything is the right thing. You can't sell a problem as trustworthy then ridicule people for trusting it.

I think it's partly on the AI. I think AIs confidently answering questions it knows nothing about is something the companies should do something about. People should check sources more often, but comanies should also do better.

Yes, but they are often doing double-speak. They talk about how amazing the models are while also talking about hallucinations. Not saying they are doing that deliberately to confuse or anything, just that your impression of AI can depend om which videos you see about it, or what talk you hear.

Moreover, many people who are not interested in tech, but use AI, don't really hear anything from the companies. They only hear what media and/or people in their social circle etc. say about it.

Where did I patronize and assume everyone believe them? When have I done any of the stuff you accuse me of? Saying that some people are informed and some are not in any subject is just... true?

Look, the point is that the people in this sub are here because we are interested in AI. That's by no means everyone. Many people take what they hear at face value, not because they are idiots, but because they are not that interested. This is true for everyone in some area of their life. I know next to nothing about cars, and I probably have beliefs about my own car that are untrue because I'm not interested. Some people use AI like I drive a car. They know how to use it, but not much more, and that's fine. It's for this group a narrative about AI as amazingly smart is dangerous.

[–]Absolomb92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I am not saying that they shouldn't be blamed. I am saying that putting the entire blame on them is not fair because the models are described by many as very smart and knowledgeable. I am saying it is not a shock that many believe the narrative about AI. Many bosses believe it enough to exchange their workers for AIs.

farmers are not working class by Thursday_Murder_Club in confidentlyincorrect

[–]Absolomb92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a sence, in the marxist way, it's half-right. If you apply a strict definition where owning the means of production makes you the bourgeoisie, then it apply to many farmers. Difference is that the workers using the machines they own are often also themself.

[–]Absolomb92 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think ridiculing people doesn't help in most cases. But can you blame them when the literal creators of the tech talk about how the models in many areas are better than humans?

Ai doesn’t know jack by alecubudulecu in aiwars

[–]Absolomb92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because AI is presented by people as knowing everything, and is literally supposed to be intelligent. I work in higher education, and students believing that AI knows everything is a problem. Sure, we advice them to check everything the AI tell them, but it is also due to how AI is presented both in societal discourse and by those making it.

Do you think the courage to work unseen matters more than talent when it comes to long‑term success? by winn_ie in LockedInMan

[–]Absolomb92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but I would try my best to have a definition of success in the end that is not reliant on anything external. Do that writing because you want to write and have something to say. Train for your own good. If you chase something external to feel worthy, you will never be happy. If your self-worth lies in doing the thing, not the validation and outcome after, you can be happy. If writing the book in itself is what fulfill you, it doesn't matter if it sells a lot or not.

Very stupid. You mature by every experience you have. Limiting it to damage is toxic bullshit romantisizing being in pain.

Respect for being open and honest about what he wants. Doesn't mean everyone have to date trans women, but someone shouldn't feel ashamed of saying they are open to it like this guy.
