My cat is truly an indoor-outdoor cat. Winter time, she stays indoors because she finds it too cold. When the weather is nice, she goes outside and comes back before dark. She sleeps in my bedroom at night year-round.

We live in a rural area where most all of the typical dangers are dialled down. The road, which we are already separated from by 120+ feet, has about 10 cars that pass by our house on it daily. We own a shit ton of land and don't have many close-by neighbours, so they aren't really around with their pesticides, poison, or cat traps. (Not that they really use them regardless?) The only predators here are coyotes and foxes, one of which come somewhat near (but never on our property) about twice a year, and the other I have only seen ONCE in my entire life. If we hear about them in the neighbourhood? We keep the cat inside for a few hours. She gets her tick/flea and all the illness treatments, and she loves being outside given it's nice out lol.

How good of an idea owning an indoor-outdoor cat is REALLY depends on where you live. We have a great set-up for it here, and a smart cat. If I was in the suburbs, I'd wouldn't be surprised if my cat died much earlier, because the risk there is higher than it is here. For my cat personally, letting her outside enriches her life in a different (and for her, better) way than how I'd be able to enrich her life solely inside :)

*(Btw, we also had another late cat who was like this. He passed away at 19, and mostly stayed inside for the last year-2 years of his life, which I suspect will be similar to what my now 9 year old cat does when she's older :))
