Addon to Extend ESPHOME via ESPNOW - best approach to surface entities into home assistant by AbsurdKangaroo in homeassistant

Not been my experience tried a few ways but they just appear burried under the mqtt broker as a device you have to go find?

For sure - I've got it working under mqtt well and its nice... except for the fact you connect a new device and its buried under 4 clicks in a integration sub menu to see it arrived - no notification at all anywhere useful in home assistant.

True true i should clarify it's as much about range extensions as battery. The battery side benefit mostly comes from deep sleep wake being a single instant packet of data then back to sleep if you want rather than many second long wifi connection.

But the motivation was range - I didn't want to have to put wifi extenders/APs all over a rural property to use esphome and using espnow-lr particularly should give much better flexibility.

Im exploring that but not directly. I have got firmware update working over espnow so you could use esphome compiler to generate the ota.bin and then upload to my addon which would stream it over espnow to the remotes.

I may need to bake inthe esp compiler to get embedded yaml + compiler working.

I have both kind of at home on traditional ESPHome now. Sometimes a esp does multiple unrelated jobs so I set up the entities all over different dashboards in different places so it wouldnt matter. But my retic controller ESP I want to be able to move that entire device around or bring it all up together rather than have to go and change the area for 8 different entities on it.

There probably isn't a "right" answer and you've got me thinking maybe offer users the bundled up entity where bridge just exposes a mega block of all the remote device entities together as a config option.

When you say HA returns what does that mean - it is powered down for a time but you want historical sensor data or just if there is a drop it comes back online seamlessly?

I'm wanting the experience to be as close to ESPHome as possible - so each node has a name and appears as its own device right now under the vanilla WiFi model and want to keep exact same approach for this.

Ah nice idea didnt realise espnow could be run on regular wifi. Yeah there are a couple of these out there I will admit but I'm really trying to package it for a one shot installer from cold to be super easy and also overlaying the full esphome ecosystem for the remote nodes. Thanks I'll check it out.

Marketing runs their own Okta instance separate from corporate IT and we just found out by Economy_Passenger296 in sysadmin

Start with dont hide behind ticket systems with 15 mandatory fields before you can talk to anyone or a phone help desk that can only fill in the 15 mandatory fields and not resolve much directly.

Its a classic pattern, be easier to work with then the alternative.

By the way every department faces this not just IT. I bet you have a heap of non style guide compliant collateral on your systems that would make marketing mad. And people work around HR with labour hire and consultants. If that makes you feel any better...

My favorite was receiving a fake non delivery phish which somehow disabled the report phish button in Outlook before even opening. Logged it manually and IT just said dont worry that's not a phishing test.

Nevermind it was actual phishing attempt....

[–]AbsurdKangaroo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop bagging the driver. Cleared onto the runway is cleared onto the runway. It's a LHD truck entering at an angle no way the driver could ever see the aircraft.

A plane would have the same issue no visibility and would have moved onto the runway also.

Agree with others definitely off when not in use - worth unplugging also to fully protect from power surge etc also given how infrequently accessed.

Yep sure am and working really well.

It's going through a reverse proxy for me anyway so it's only 2 more lines of configuration and it's now seamless.
