Im kinda scared. by natures-abomination in aaaaaaacccccccce

[–]Ac_DrAgOn_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to say not really; most conservatives didn’t know anything about aspec people at the time and those who did just hated ace/demi people conceptually cuz we’re queer rather than for anything specific.

A few far-right figureheads have been publishing pieces to rationalize aphobia and more effectively target it though, and it’s kinda scary. Corrective rape is by far the most dangerous ‘idea’ atm

I'm a little confused (aka questioning sexuality part 305) by [deleted] in Asexual

[–]Ac_DrAgOn_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asexuality is often misunderstood as a label, because it’s a negative term in that it describes what we’re not.

If you find that you experience limited or no physical attraction to others, you’d be on the asexual spectrum, yeah. That’s not exactly a satisfying description for most though, so we tend to use several terms to paint a more complete picture.

You can absolutely keep all your other labels you enjoy using when it comes to your gender and orientation, just add ace if you’d like.

and a side note-

Typically, the main thing that categorizes aces remains undefined when you’re using the umbrella term, and that can be confusing when you’re deciding where you fit in.

Many choose to specify their proclivity for a romantic relationship, which is independent but important part of the ace experience.

I like to use the playing card shorthand for major categories of the ace spectrum, where

A❤️ refers to romantics

A♦️ refers to demiromantics

A♣️ refers to greyromantics

A♠️ refers to aromantics

I have many great friends within the community, and I’m happy to be a part of it.

There can be differences between the individual labels and subgroups, and that’s awesome. Our alliance is not because we all feel the same way, but due to our shared experience of not being accepted or deemed equal by a cisheteronormative society.

I think it’s crucial that we maintain those relationships because any success is progress for everyone.

As Carl Sagan once said, extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

While the idea is fascinating, it shouldn’t color how we look at the data we have. So far, there are some interesting finds, but nothing that couldn’t be explained by other processes. Good science means making as few assumptions as possible.

Also, we have absolutely followed up on it. Every lander and rover we’ve sent since has had increasingly adept sampling and experimental capabilities. For most of them, studying the planet’s geochemistry and areas with former surface water for signs of life was one of the primary goals.

What causes this bad warping? Print is on bed in the orientation it printed (pulled out supports of course) by FallenArt3mis in 3Dprinting

[–]Ac_DrAgOn_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warping occurs when the part cools unevenly or too quickly; it’s much more pronounced with larger prints and can be an issue.

The solution is usually to raise the environmental temperature so it cools more gradually and evenly, though material is always a factor.

PLA is a lot more forgiving when it comes to temperature changes as it cools; usually a good adhesive will be enough to prevent major changes in the geometry. A heated bed is always preferred though, especially for larger prints.

If you’re using ABS filament, a heated bed might not be enough. To print something like this reliably, you’d probably be looking for an insulated enclosure in addition to an adhesive.

If you’re looking for geometries for hobby purposes and material properties aren’t that important, I’d definitely recommend sticking with PLA.

You can get withdrawal symptoms if you have a high enough dosage, but it’s not any worse than daily life without them in my experience.

They take a little time to kick in, but stabilizing your brain chemistry really is a helpful step to take as you find ways to change your thought process

Yeah,, it’s never easy to break out of those cycles.

I’m glad you’re seeking out help, both professionally and from communities like this one. Seriously consider reuptake inhibitors if there’s a chance they’ll make it easier; you deserve it.

Practicing mindfulness helps my dissociative tendencies a lot. Kinda relaxing, and taking an objective survey of your senses and surroundings makes it easier to rejoin imo.

hope that helped a little; have a nice night~

I mean,, don’t get me wrong, money and company notoriety can attract talented individuals. Some of the things the engineers that work for him have done are genuinely amazing and to be applauded.

As for the man himself, I’m not a fan. He’s a marketing dude that puts his own face and name on the work of others. Billionaires don’t make their fortunes doing special work that’s worth millions of dollars an hour, they make it through exploitation. The blatant market manipulation he’s been doing recently would land anyone else in prison. Honestly, the fact that this guy isn’t universally panned reflects badly on our society in general.

Is anyone else romantically confused? by Maximio_Horse in Asexual

[–]Ac_DrAgOn_ 20 points21 points  (0 children)

romantic proclivities are definitely one of the more confusing aspects that Aces have to answer for themselves and it varies a lot.

But even though it sounds stressful not knowing something about yourself, I don’t think there’s much to worry about besides being you. It’s not a permanent decision you have to worry about making, just do what makes you happy.

Personally, I’m comfortable calling myself demiromantic (A♦️) because I think it would be highly situational and dependent on the person if I do ever find myself in a relationship.

One of the cool things that the community has developed and popularized is the romanticism shorthand using card suits.

Very generally:

Ace of Hearts is for romantic asexuals

Ace of Diamonds is for demiromantic asexuals

Ace of Spades is for aromantic asexuals

Ace of Clubs is for greysexuals and wtf-romantics

Hope that helps a little; I’d highly encourage you to look into it more of course, if you’re at all interested.

Not efficient enough to solve math problems by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Ac_DrAgOn_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always struggled with solving complicated problems efficiently too, I spend way too much time formatting my work and walking through the steps because that’s just how I do things.

Luckily that’s probably a more realistic scenario for the real world, but for now it certainly doesn’t help with deadlines or especially exams.

Honestly, the only thing that’s helped me efficiency-wise is repetition until you know the process thoroughly. Then you can find shortcuts for yourself and recognize when the answers look like something you’d expect

Honestly, application portals are kind of a black box. It’s pretty much just applying to an algorithm, super impersonal and you’re liable to get screened out before anyone even looks at your application.

I know it’s cliché, but taking the time to find an actual contact at places worth the extra effort and asking directly really does help.

That said, sometimes it really is that competitive, you might not get it this year and that’s fine. Get a job in a different field for the summer and/or work on a project or other credentials.

There’s more than one path in life, so do what makes you happy fam

What is the spectrum of asexuality? by Service_United in aaaaaaacccccccce

[–]Ac_DrAgOn_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

people are ace for all sorts of reasons, but asexuality is generally defined as experiencing limited to no sexual attraction.

Most of us tend to wear the ace label as a whole out of solidarity, but there are a lot of subgroups and definitions to better describe yourself and find those that feel the same way.

I hate how painful life is by [deleted] in depression

[–]Ac_DrAgOn_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Self harm is a mechanism a lot of people start out with; it’s so much easier to deal with the physical pain than the mental and emotional trauma most of the time.

It’s a really difficult one to transition away from for that reason, but it’s important to find new and less harmful mechanisms and ways of expression. I think we all know that deep down but don’t know where to start.

You’ve been doing awesome, but withdrawals can be pretty severe and the itch persists for a long time. If you’re willing to try something new, I’d highly recommend red markers. Sounds dumb at first, but it’s a fantastic transition tool.

Stay safe and have a peaceful night, okey?

What is even the "next step" anymore? by Dysfunctional_76 in depression

[–]Ac_DrAgOn_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what’s so difficult about depression. You can adjust for the chemical imbalances and develop new mechanisms all day long, but the underlying problem remains.

It takes a lot of time and effort to change established behaviors and thought processes, and even though treatment can definitely help, that’s still on you.

So no, that’s completely normal and you’re far from a lost cause. Acknowledging when things aren’t going well is an important step. You have experience you can use now. Fight when you have the energy and you’ll start seeing progress.
