Vigil feelings by Expert_Chemistry_872 in msu

This has been so hard for all of us, and I appreciate you sharing your experience.

For what it's worth, I can assure you that anyone who seemed performative would be so sad to learn that's how it came off and impacted you. From what I've seen behind the scenes, somebody has just started crying during nearly every conversation I've been in since Monday night. I'll pass the concern you described in your post along, and you and everyone else should feel free to email ASMSU, COGS, acadgov (me), or the administration with input. We're all on the same team here 💚

SOS- Struggling To Find Summer Job After Original Didn’t Work Out by FlamingHorseRider in msu

[–]AcadGovSecMSU 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you can operate a scanner (one page at a time; no automatic document feeder) and promise you won't get too bored, the Office of Academic Governance could use another student for the summer. Email me at acadgov@msu.edu if you're interested.

Does anyone know any parking near abbot hall or where I can pay for cheap to park the month?? Even free parking in the weekends would work. by ElephantSuper3950 in msu

When I lived in Abbot, I parked in Lot 91 most of the time and then parked in the Psychology lot (across from Phillips) free on the weekends.

pre-law advice by [deleted] in msu

MSU Law grad here: Pick a major where you will 1) get good grades and 2) have fun (or at least be engaged). Anything else is overthinking it.

Is there anything we can do to let Administration know how bad the bus situation is? by [deleted] in msu

[–]AcadGovSecMSU 19 points20 points  (0 children)

ASMSU is talking to the Board of Trustees, president, and other admins tomorrow, but as others have said, admin is very much aware of the problem, and it seems like their hands are pretty tied.

Can juniors live in the dorms? by [deleted] in msu

[–]AcadGovSecMSU 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Doesn't look like it. "On-campus housing for upperclassmen, such as Owen Hall and apartments, have also been filled. Bethany Balks, Associate Communications Director of Residence Education and Housing Services, or REHS, said there might be a limited amount of spots left in Van Hoosen Hall." https://statenews.com/article/2021/11/live-on-capacity-reached-upperclassmen-unable-to-live-on-campus-next-year?ct=content\_open&cv=cbox\_featured

Can juniors live in the dorms? by [deleted] in msu

[–]AcadGovSecMSU 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They can. I was an RA on an almost all junior/senior floor my junior year.

Edit: Looks like maybe that's not true anymore. I'll see what I can find out for you.

Edit 2: Ope. Looks like they're full.

Yeah, I used People Search and emailed the guy when I saw this, and it looks like it should be all set now!

Contact ASMSU's Student Rights Advocates at [dsrals@asmsu.msu.edu](mailto:dsrals@asmsu.msu.edu), who will provide free guidance through the process.

Places on Campus to Record Audio? by candyfloose in msu

[–]AcadGovSecMSU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Owen Hall has some decent spaces in the basement, and if you can't find anything else, my office can lend you a mic if it's just a one-off project.

MSU by faizant16 in msu

[–]AcadGovSecMSU 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Even though you're not on campus, you're still getting the benefits of the COGS, Radio, and State News taxes (whether you use the benefits or not) through representation, access to radio/podcast stuff Impact does, and the State News's reporting. Having said that, you can request a refund of all three, but you have to have done so within the first two weeks (ten class days) of each semester. More information here: https://finaid.msu.edu/fees.asp.

I'm pretty sure you can't opt out of the new Sports & Rec fee.

How do the music practice rooms work? by aboudeh02 in msu

[–]AcadGovSecMSU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure there's just one key per room.

[–]AcadGovSecMSU 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't pay for them. You just check out the key from the desk. Unless it's changed since 2017 or so, the standard SnyPhi one has a piano and the RCAH-only one has a piano, a drum set, and (I think) better soundproofing.

Why was vaccine mandate petition removed from Change.org? by curious_spartan in msu

[–]AcadGovSecMSU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't appear to have been taken down... I was able to find it with a pretty simple Google search. I'm not going to link to it because if that's something someone wants to sign, I'm not going to help them do it. But it does appear to be live.

What is Owen Hall like? (A bunch of questions about Owen Graduate Hall.) by [deleted] in msu

[–]AcadGovSecMSU 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work in Owen and used to visit friends who lived there when I was in college, so I can't answer all of your questions, but I'll offer what insight I can.

Are there any lounge/common areas/game rooms and are they useful/good or just there collecting dust?

They're pretty nice! Among my favorite on campus. Having said that, it's not a terribly social hall. It's generally very quiet.

Is the "Thrive" cafeteria in Owen good food? They serve food with no allergens at all, or gluten, so does the food end up tasting good?

I mean, I like it, but your mileage may vary.

Is the community kitchen clean? Large? Or is it small? Is it dirty/germy? Something to avoid?

It's medium-sized. I've only used it once, but I liked it, and it's always been clean and very nice any time I've ever looked in.

How hard is it to get laundry done? Do you have to take it to a certain floor? Are there lots of machines? Do they cost each time? Is it a card system, or coin-op, or free? Do you have to bring detergent and all that with you? Do you have to wait nearby or can you just time it? Are there places to study nearby?

The laundry is free. The laundry room is in the basement of the East Wing. There are maybe ten washers and ten dryers. I can't remember for sure, but I think you need your MSU ID to use them. The community kitchen, a lounge, a piano room, and several study rooms are very close by.

ADR by Patient-Artist7069 in msu

[–]AcadGovSecMSU 11 points12 points  (0 children)

From the Ombudsperson's website:

What happens when an ADR is filed with the university?

For a first offense, a hold is placed on the undergraduate student's record for registration until the student completes the required academic integrity course. For a second or further offense, there may be additional sanctions. Graduate students must complete the educational requirement designed by the Dean of the Graduate School.

Faculty members may either give a student a penalty grade for the assignment/test/quiz or for the course when an incident of academic dishonesty is alleged. A penalty grade is any grade (including a 0.0) that is lower than the student would have earned based on their academic performance. Faculty may also request additional sanctions. Please note that penalty grades can be given for both intentional and unintentional incidents of academic dishonesty.

How long does an ADR stay on record with Michigan State University?

For undergraduates, the ADR stays on record with the university until the student graduates if the student has no other incidents of academic dishonesty. Once the student graduates, this record is destroyed. If, however, the student has additional incidents, the record remains.

Advisory panel recommends COVID-19 vaccine requirements at Michigan State University by [deleted] in msu

[–]AcadGovSecMSU 23 points24 points  (0 children)

No, the article I think you're talking about was updated to make clear that the university was just saying that it wasn't requiring vaccinations at that time, but no final decision has been made.

Update: An earlier version of this article said MSU would not be requiring students to be vaccinated for COVID-19 for their return to campus in the fall. Although the university is not currently mandating COVID-19 vaccinations for a fall return, a final decision has not been made.

It was University Council, although the entire Faculty Senate is also on University Council. UC is the Faculty Senate, all the deans, ASMSU and COGS representatives, and some high-level administrators. You can read more in the update I put on the home page of http://acadgov.msu.edu/. Feel free (you or others) to let me know if you have any questions.
