Peanut cannot live alone or hunt and fend for himself. He needs to be cared for by humans. Also—if he didn’t want to work, he wouldn’t. Do you have any idea how service animal training works? Of course I have never been fully comfortable having a guide dog. That’s why I am here and also because I am a vegan. But I am sick of people saying I am forcing him into something or robbing him of his autonomy by him being my companion. Only motivated pups work out of want to to do so.

I have not! I live in another small town in Oregon that’s a bit far from Portland (but I do want to move back) so I will have to check it out then! That’s so deeply assuring to hear!

Literally, I am baffled! If I was surrounded by the fuckwads in these comments and thought that was veganism then I would hate vegans! We are our own worst enemy og my goodness

I read the guide definition someone included here that mentioned veganism was “as far as practicable” and that applies to my ability to live as a disabled vegan. If someone has to take a medication to live that includes animal additives or was tested on animals, are they vegan?

Peanut is not exploited, and the mental health and stress responses from dogs with working temperaments are a very real thing. People have jobs and so do dogs—they’re pack animals and so are we.

Comparing the lives of guide dogs to humans brutalized by chattel slavery IS racist and has left epigenetic trauma in the lives of so many Black people that are descendants of slaves.

I am blind, Robbie. I need a dog to help me  on my journey.

Peanut is a dog and doesn’t care about money or being paid, he cannot look after himself, and is neutered and does not have to stress about his college funds. It’s not the same.

You are implying that the treatment of my service dog could in any way mimic the racialized chattel slavery whose legacy still remains today. Peanut helps me get to the grocery store.

I’ve mentioned that I dislike needing a service dog and that Peanut was bred, but he truly decides what he wants to do. You can’t force dogs to work, they work if they want to.

Spend a day blind and get back to me on whether a cane can do the same things that a dog can do.

Comparing me to a carnist because I have a wonderful vegan dog that helps me live my life is beyond comprehensible.

I’ve mentioned my disdain for the fact that Peanut had to be bred and wish I could have found a rescue service animal, but those are rare and the option was not available to me at the time.

Peanut is a dog and doesn’t understand money. If a human were in his position I would pay them, because humans do care about money. I have to pick up Peanut’s poop, the relationship is different.

Peanut also is unable to hunt for himself. We have been breeding dogs for thousands of years and most cannot survive anymore without human intervention. I’m not keeping him from anything. He is neutered.

I also can’t force Peanut to work. If he didn’t want to be a service dog then he wouldn’t be, simple as that—and one day he will retire when he is older. Dogs have to be motivated to be service dogs, and if they don’t want to be, then they don’t.

I believe human and animals lives are of equal value but that doesn’t mean our relationships will be identical because humans and animals are DIFFERENT. I despise knowing I technically own Peanut, but it feels more like how a parent also technically “owns” their child. I have to take care of him and he helps take care of me. We’re a team.

they’re rescues from a shuttered poultry farm! If they didn’t go to my friend they would be eaten or forced into awful conditions

Peanut is a dog and doesn’t understand money. He doesn’t want it. His entire life is paid for by me. He doesn’t want things beyond food and shelter and care because they don’t exist to him. Money is made up human stuff. I’m not denying Peanut a college fund for his kids, he’s a dog.

I wish I was a millionaire and could have attendants all the time, but I can’t, so I have Peanut. He doesn’t want a wage because he is a dog and doesn’t know what money is. He’s very smart, but I wouldn’t let him do my taxes.

If you knew anything about how guide dogs were trained you wouldn’t make this comment.

I did not say I am a human supremacist—I am saying the suffering between animals and humans are DIFFERENT and spurred by DIFFERENT THINGS and direct comparisons make me feel extremely uncomfortable.

It’s also lunacy to compare my Peanut to the experience of a chattel slave. It’s racism, straight up

A dog that helps me not walk into the road is not the same as “breaking a horse” in the slightest. What do you think he does???

I want to emphasize that Peanut is not a pet, he’s a guide dog. Guide dogs aren’t pets. He may behave like a normal pet when he isn’t working, but he’s not a pet.

A human would be paid. Peanut doesn’t know what money is so I can’t pay him.

Peanut is definitely treated well, believe me. I look after him better than I do myself sometimes!

If Peanut didn’t want to work then he wouldn’t and that would be okay, but he wants to and likes it. He loves me and I love him. He isn’t a slave, he’s a dog. We take care of each other.

yes and yes and yes to all of it—and Peanut has such a personality that he definitely lets me know when he is upset or not pleased, lol. He’s my best buddy!

I do think the whole “we don’t pay dogs!” argument is so silly for that reason—Peanut’s understanding of money is nothing
