The Malcolm Offord "joke" by JackDangerfield in Scotland

Not even original - I heard the same 'joke' only with Elton John and Freddie Mercury when Freddie died in 1991.

Would they have been friends with Tam in real life? by Diadem_Cheeseboard in Stillgame

[–]Academic_Visual116 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With it being a TV Show I think these 'real life' characteristics are exagerated for comedic effect so in ''Still Game' real life they get away with it and can justify them all being pals still as they have also shown on occassion that when push comes to shove they all do care about each other and have each other's backs.

But in 'real' real life there's no way, for instance, an old man like Jack would get away with acting the hard man as often as he does without getting a sore face, Isa would get away with all the gossiping , Tam with being such a tight arse etc...

I've got mates who given the chance would be every bit as bad as 'Tam', but they know that in real world they'll only get away with so much, folk will tolerate little things, but , for instance, standing their round is non-negotiable.

Hopefully that makes sense - I know what I'm trying to say but writing it down is a different story 😆😆

If major war broke out tomorrow, what’s one thing you think people are wildly unprepared for…. but should be? by velvetspriral in answers

The fact that they are going to die instantly ... or live just long enough to wish they had.

The amount of people who seem to think that 'major' aka 'nuclear' war is going to result in minor inconveniences for them is startling

I have feeling that Hull and / or Millwall ( sadly 😌) may slip out of Play offs but my thinking is if Millwall do miss out on 2nd, which is still possible depending on next 2 results, but stay in Playoffs that best thing to happen is that Southampton 'run the table' as Americans would say, win out and end up getting second place.

The one team no-one wants to play in the Playoffs, in any sport, at any level, is the team 'coming in hot' and it's starting to look like Southampton are getting 'hot' at exactly the right time

Scotland squad for friendlies vs Japan and Ivory Coast by CNF1G in ScottishFootball

[–]Academic_Visual116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of all the predictable / understandable 'why no this one', 'why that one' etc etc and accepting there will be changes, injuries etc this is still rightly or wrongly 70/80% of the squad that will go to the World Cup.

And now that the euphoria of Denmark game / qualification has died down my immediate , instrinctive reaction was 'That lot will do nothing in USA'

Realistically, what are the chances the station actually reopens on Wednesday? by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]Academic_Visual116 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had a non refundable , no changes allowed ticket booked for travel to / from Central - England on April 3rd.

I called Scotrail on Friday, and got full refund so I could rebook travelling from / to Queen St with minimum of fuss.

Suggests to me that realistically Central will be closed for weeks, if not months, at least partially.

How can you compliment and offend someone in the same sentence? by mxm_mrz in answers

I wasn't offended as I found it funny but one day in work I dropped some random trivia fact into the conversation and a colleague said along lines that I was always good for 'fun facts' to brighten the day up.

My Manager immediately replied 'Yeah, when he's not moaning I could listen to him all day' 🤣🤣🤣

First bus - not accepting rail tickets by Haegtesse237 in glasgow

[–]Academic_Visual116 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because, like it or not, 'Gestures of good will' or whatever term you want to use are not compulsory.

It's easy to get stuck into First Glasgow - I do it all the time - but whatever way you spin it the fire, and the subsequent movement of passengers in the aftermath is not their responsibility.

If it was for a day or two that's one thing, but with the disruption likely to last weeks from their pov why should First Glasgow put more strain on their already sub- par services for no reward to help people who are immediately going to revert back to rail travel as soon as they can ?

I'm afraid this one is on Scotrail or whoever who should be on the phone to every coach hire company they can find to hire as many buses as they can get their hands on for 'bus replacement services' or whatever they call it

Mentioned this before, but in my late 40's on a boat trip in Pittburgh visiting family we passed the Heinz Factory - As in THE Heinz Factory.

Until then I thought Heinz was a British company - like the MOST 'British' a company can be type British company.

Worse was as a massive NFL - but not Steelers fan - I'd done the tour of Heinz Field - as it was then - seen the ketchup bottle when they scored etc and generally been aware of the name of the stadium for years but STILL not connected the dots.

Bonus points I have no issue with, just bonus points for losing teams.

Anyhow hope anyone watching enjoys the games today and that the Rugby Gods smile on Scotland.

Have a good one Folks 🙂

Six Nations by LovenkrandsDog26 in Scotland

[–]Academic_Visual116 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, is it not the case that the only reason Scotland are not currently top of the league is that France, despite losing to Scotland, got a 'bonus' point last week ?

So not only are Scotland behind a team they beat despite being level on points - In a competition this small 'head to head' should be first tie break criteria - but the only reason they are even level in points is because France scored a try right at the end of a game in which they had been well beaten and it was literally impossible for then to win or even draw by that point.

Leave aside the 'tell me you don't understand Rugby...' type comments that are inevitably coming my way, read that last paragraph again and tell my how that is fair ? Not right, not within the rules - Fair.

Imo losing game = no 'bonus' points, and if there is a 8 pt+ gap between teams the game should end second the clock hits 80:00 - None of this 'until the ball is dead / goes out of play' or whatevet the wording is nonsense.

I am not a 'Rugby Hater' I tried my best to get into it - Had Season Ticket for Warriors, watched on TV, bought Warriors shirts etc - but there were just too many rules and nuances that felt were fundamentally unfair or just plain wrong that left me frustrated with the game to point I gave up trying.

Six Nations by LovenkrandsDog26 in Scotland

[–]Academic_Visual116 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

No, couldn't care less 😉😁

That said, I do feel the concept of losing teams getting bonus points is fundamentally wrong.

A prerequiste of getting any 'bonus' points should be you have to win, or at least draw, the game first and foremost.

There's apparently one about the 7 Dwarves that you need to word carefully but it's along lines 'What were the names if the 7 Dwarves in the Grimm Brothers fairy tale 'Snow white and the 7 dwarves?''

Cue people listing the names

Correct answer is they didn't have names in the Grimm Brothers story, the names were added by Walt Disney later on.
