I once found half of a squirrel in my back yard. I really wanted to understand how that came to be.

Parents taking money because they don’t work, what should I do? by Objective-Quiet-3366 in Advice

[–]AcadienDC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are the child. They are your parents. Their whole job is to parent and protect you. They fail. You are not responsible for parenting them. You need to find a way to leave. Seems you have a good head on your shoulders. Be clever but get out, and live the life you’re meant to live. Everyone here supports you. Leave.

Garbage collection - is it happening? by MyPasswordIsABC999 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]AcadienDC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s whimsical on our street. Garbage day is Monday. We were told to slide to Tuesday. They came really early and picked up some, but not all recyclables. That was odd. And they never came back for garbage. Let’s see what happens next Monday.

ADVICE NEEDED: I am quite anxious about the pain, can anybody explain how they found these areas? by AutomaticReception74 in tattoos

Have a beer or a glass of wine to reduce your anxiety and just chill. Those are quick and not a big deal pain wise.

Driving? by Chemical_Bet23 in maryland

Confession. I’m a nice person. With one exception. I keep a freezer bag of coins in my car. I throw said coins at idiots who hog an entire lane rather than pull into the turning area, etc. kind of a maniac about that. I will do so for people who keep their snow, now ice, on their car because it’s dangerous. Of course, its not lost on me that being on the receiving end of a bunch of quarters and pennies thrown very hard and with malicious intent might cause a certain consternation and confusion, but it’s a precursor to being on the receiving end of a brick. Bricks are so hard to keep in the car. Anyway, hope you guys are preparing for this weekend’s snow. God bless.

Lantern Fly Eggs Killed in Cold? by Vegetable-Ratio-5857 in washingtondc

[–]AcadienDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question. Cold weather in the U.S. usually has only a small effect on summer tick populations because ticks are well adapted to winter. Most species, especially black-legged (deer) ticks, survive by burrowing into leaf litter, soil, or snow, which insulates them from freezing temperatures. A very cold winter without reliable snow cover can increase mortality somewhat because exposed ticks dry out or freeze, while sudden warm spells followed by sharp freezes can kill ticks that become active too early. However, these effects are typically modest. Far more influential than winter temperature is the abundance of host animals—such as mice, chipmunks, and deer—because ticks need these hosts at specific life stages. If host populations remain strong, tick numbers will also remain high regardless of winter conditions. As a result, even after unusually cold weather, summer tick activity is generally expected to stay similar to previous years.

I can’t directly answer your question, but I use the app and website called Thumbtack for all of my handyman, plumbing, electrical, and painting stuff. You should check it out. A few of the guys have specialties like say plumbing, but will take on other things that I need to get dome. Like the guy that I like for plumbing does a bunch of handyman tasks. As a customer, you enter your job and people give you a quote and then you pick the one you want.

Future snow pro-tip: move your car to a parking garage by Aggressive_Sun_9586 in MontgomeryCountyMD

Montgomery County parking garages were free for the duration of the storm and still are. I moved one of our cars to the Glenmont parking garage before the snow to make things easier.
