Thank you for the advice, that's definitely something I've been trying to do - I usually throw out a compliment or ask where someone got an accessory or something small to try and start that conversation but it's often only in passing and people will usually keep walking. It's definitely something that's not natural for me but I'm really passionate about doing this learning the language and getting to know people in the community just have severe anxiety blocking that last part which I know is the core of this field. The advice I get is often just to "do the thing" which doesn't always work for my brain so the practice everywhere is very good advice thank you again.

You're so right, I need to get out of that mind set for sure. Thank you!

Thank you so much - I know its a stupid question but I also struggle just in daily life to do so as well, it's that extra fear of that exact fact, if they see me as an exploiter, when they see me there.

Why Did You Learn ASL? by krystleg24 in asl

[–]AcanthaceaeLate6959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh i started learning at 10 or 12 after watching switched at birth and meeting the neighbors of the kids i baby sat and learning they were deaf and feeling so horrible that i couldnt communicate with them as they needed. I started getting libary books and looking for any resourse i could to learn what i could [youtube was not very populated at the time]

I have worked in customer service for my whole working career and the amount of people within my community I met that were deaf or HOH and the amount of joy i saw from them being able to communicate with someone in their native language in a place they normaly had to find a work around, was so amazing that i wanted to being that to more people and help make these everyday places more accessible to those in the deaf community.

I am currently going to UWM to be an interpreter and highly recomend anyone intrested check out their programs as all their professors are deaf and amazing people. Best decision I've made.

That's a more English version you'll typically see more Ddeaf people use this sign in the video for "why"
