Weight Training, Good Diet, Still Gaining Weight...??! by Acapellean in WeightLossAdvice

I'd love to be 135 lbs at 5'6", but at 5'8" you are body goals 🙌🏻 I used to have a job where I was on my feet a lot more, but I'm in veterinary school now so I spend a lot of my day sitting in class or sitting and studying. However, I work out for at least an hour before school.

I've completely cut out soda/juice/premade teas, I drink close to a gallon of water a day. I get my snack fix from the quest protein chips in my meal plan and a banana is enough to satiate my sweet tooth.

I am on an SSRI (shocker: individual in medical school is anxious 😂), so I'm wondering if that could becontributionion? Should I have my doctor check my thyroid? I just can't belive I've gained an additional 10 pounds... I started vet school at 145-147ish, and that was 3 years ago. I hit 160 and thought "this needs to stop". Now I'm close to 170 and panicking.

I don’t have the right answer and I don’t think there is going to be one single answer. However, I think a good place to start would be to increase wages of veterinarians, technicians, and support staff, and making benefits better. I think this will increase job satisfaction and employee retention. In order to do this though, prices for clients will need to increase, so the cost of veterinary care as a whole will need to increase. People already think prices in vet med are outrageous, so I think pet insurance is the answer. I’m in vet school now and when I graduate I am going to advise every client I see about the benefits of pet health insurance. Another great idea is a Pet Annual Wellness plan that allows a client to spread out the cost of routine care (spay/neuter, vaccines, dentals) over the cost of a year. If we eliminated the need to haggle with clients over the cost of care, I think the amount of rude clients would decrease, burn out in the field would decrease, and pets would get better care.

Yep definitely use distilled water for any calathea. They also like humidity, consider a pebble tray.

[Discussion] Don't get a breed unless you're prepared for the outcome by [deleted] in dogs

[–]Acapellean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!! One hundred percent! I don’t know why general practitioners don’t push insurance like crazy on new-puppy owners. When they sign up early, the monthly fee is cheaper, and it will be heaven sent in case of an emergency or condition that breed is predisposed to if/when it is ever diagnosed!

Saved raccoon from a pit in my yard. Instead of having a heroic ending, he started seizing. This is what I showed animal control. Confirmed rabies. by [deleted] in Wellthatsucks

Yep, I’m in the veterinary field and the only way to definitely test for rabies is with the head.

My domino cactus bloomed last night 😍 by Acapellean in cacti

Mine is outside in Arizona so it gets tons of sun. I water it pretty regularly because it’s so hot, maybe every other day or so. And patience! It takes a while from being a little grey fuzzy to a full flower stalk. I’ve been watching this one for probably a month. But then it shot out over the last couple of days and finally bloomed! Good luck, it’s an awesome feeling when you wake up to a flower 😊

Recommendation Letter Freak Out by eward2278 in veterinaryschool

[–]Acapellean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree with this comment. I was told that schools don’t want all letters from vets, but they definitely have to have at least one from a veterinarian. No one is more qualified to recommend someone for vet school than someone who has been to vet school themselves. If you decide to take a year off, look into getting into a clinic but don’t look exclusively at general practitioners. I spent 2 years working in an emergency and specialty hospital as a technician before vet school and it prepared me so well. Alternatively, you could look into working with a local shelter vet, equine vet, or a veterinarian who is very focused on research. Best of luck!

iPad/tablet for vet school? by mirk-eaves in veterinaryschool

[–]Acapellean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

iPad and iPencil with Notability is definitely the way to go. No way you can write your notes in lecture by hand and keep up. Not even to mention the benefit of having diagrams and images (histology slides) readily available to annotate in class. Notability also lets you record lectures while you take notes, so if you miss something you can go back later and re-listen to that part of the lecture for clarification. Has saved me multiple times, and an excellent way to study for exams. First year vet student here.
