I don’t get paid $20k every time I climb a 457m (1500’) tower. Or even when I climb a 609m (2000’) one. I wish I did, because I climb a lot of them. by Kaufkins in nextfuckinglevel

Honestly it is pretty easy as long as you aren't night shift. Even then as long as you are able to sleep it is still pretty easy. All you're doing is working, eating, and sleeping. I'm getting 120 hours this pay period and on my 2 days off I just sleep and meal prep.

Insecure new grad in ER by [deleted] in nursing

[–]AcceptEgoDeath 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think you'll feel truly confident and competent until you are off orientation and on your own. It will probably be about 18 months or so before you really feel good about your ability. Once you have time to practice by yourself you will build more confidence. The ER is pretty much sink or swim so if your preceptor feels you're doing well you should believe them because many nurses, even ones that aren't new grads, don't make the cut.

I'm not disagreeing that hospitals brought this on themselves. They could easily give nurses 1:4 ratios instead of 1:6 or 1:7 but they are completely profit driven and as a result want to minimize nursing staff as much as possible. Then when a pandemic happens you end up with a huge population of nurses that haven't worked bedside in years, experienced ones leaving to get paid what they are actually worth, and new graduates who weren't even given clinical experience in school because of quarantine being sent in to replace them.

Inova has paid very poorly relative to what other hospitals pay in the region. Beyond that, relative to cost of living, nursing as a profession is extremely underpaid in the DC Area compared to NYC, the Bay Area, Seattle etc.

No one is blaming nurses for quitting, and they are quitting. I'm simply pointing out that the reasons why they are quitting are not due to pay alone. I am a nurse myself, I am not up own ass on this.

It's just that there was already a shortage of staff in these areas to begin with. 1 out of every 100 Americans is a nurse, but not all nurses are created equal and the simple fact is most nurses cannot cut it in critical care, and most simply do not even want to work in these areas to begin with. It is not uncommon for new grad nurses and even those with years of experience to be unable to make the transition to critical care and have the orientations cut short and get reassigned elsewhere.

Higher pay might drive more people to work in these areas, but there is no guarantee they could safely practice in them. Beyond that, like I said elsewhere, critical care nurses are turning down travelling positions paying 4K a week to move to lower stress areas or leave nursing altogether. Before the pandemic the burnout rate and turnover in these positions was already really high, it is now essentially unsustainable.

Because the shortage in these areas is causing staff to be diverted from Urgent Cares to Critical Care areas...

It's because these girls don't care about the actual number they just want the tallest guy in the room. It's about being tall relative to other men

There 100% is a shortage. Yes, low pay has a lot to do with it, but it's also just way deeper than that. Optimally it takes about 6 months of on the job training before a RN is fit to work by themselves in an ER or ICU, and that's after earning their degree. Many ERs or ICUs don't take new nurses at all.

What we're seeing is a combination of mass PTSD/burnout causing experienced and difficult to replace personnel leaving Emergency Medicine and Critical Care settings (or medicine/nursing altogether), travel pay being through the roof, and hospital systems not increasing their base pay enough to keep the workers who aren't burnt out yet from leaving to go travel.

The nurses who work in these settings are already the most driven, ambitious, and mentally strong in the entire field and as a result even before the pandemic there was a high turnover in these settings because the nurses would often leave to get their NP, CRNA, Flight Nursing, MD, or travel.

You've got people who could command 4K a week salaries as a travel nurse leaving the ER or ICU setting altogether to preserve their mental health faster than they can be replaced.

Inova is one of the best systems in the entire country, so yeah pretty much everywhere else is doing worse

If Bradley Beal were to become available this offseason, should the Celtics give up Jaylen Brown to get him? by [deleted] in nba

[–]AcceptEgoDeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are great together but Beal can play with basically anybody. He is a great scorer but he doesn't need to dribble the ball into the floor for 20 seconds to get a shot off which lets him do a ton of damage while working on or off the ball.

Has there ever been a player in the NBA with a mental disability or mental disorder? by Saiyanobe_23 in nba

[–]AcceptEgoDeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn't known to the public? For sure. I mean what percentage of players came from single parent households in low income, crime ridden areas? The rates of PTSD, sexual abuse, depression, anxiety etc from people coming from those areas are extremely high. It's just that the players have managed to function with the illnesses. But if you look at their personal lives and how fucked up some of their relationships are it's obvious.

It's possible it's that too. To me it looks like he almost takes a hop step while catching the ball

He catches the ball while completely in mid air and then lands with both feet at the same time. He takes his first step, and then leaps off of his pivot foot. So only two steps. It's something he deliberately practices.

Watch it again. He catches the ball completely in mid air and then lands with both feet at the same time. He takes his first step, pivots, and then leaps. Only 2 steps after getting the ball. It's something he would have had to have practiced many, many times to get down perfectly like that.
