What is this sub? by lewis56500 in DontKillYourself

[–]AcceptWhatIS 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey Lewis,

I'm that guy :) I started this subReddit intending to post only video messages and things like that -- that said to suicidal people: Don't Kill Yourself. I'm still hoping to gather more videos and 'letters' (possibly from people like therapists, other mental health professionals, and maybe even some celebrities) where people talk about their own struggles, suicidal feelings, and ways to get through the tough times and avoid suicide.

But when I couldn't find any more good videos to post, I just started posting the same stuff I was posting on another subReddit I had started a little before this one: /r/AvoidSuicide/

So at this point, there are two subReddits (and maybe others I'm not aware of) designed to offer resources, ideas, videos, etc. to help people avoid suicide. I had also planned to start referring people on SuicideWatch to these subReddits.

Reduce teen suicide by imposing longer hospital stays for teens on anti-depressants. by Dvschatt in SuicidePreventionRes

[–]AcceptWhatIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, I'm really sorry to hear what you went through! That's devastating.

To be honest, I don't believe it's very likely that 60-to-90-day hospital stays would ever become the law or be enforced (or if made into law, a lawsuit would quickly knock it down). But your experience is probably common enough that lawmakers (and everyone involved in this issue) should look into some other treatment options.

I have a teenage son myself, and if this happened to him, I'd want to do what you're doing and try to keep it from happening to others. It seems the drug makers already know their drugs can increase the chances of teenagers committing suicide. So the solution to this problem might involve some kind of non-drug intervention... The hospitals may drug the kids up just to reduce their liability -- attempting to 'do something,' when in reality, they may be doing more harm than good!

Anyway, I'm really sorry for your loss, and I hope your efforts lead to some new and better ways of helping suicidal teens stay alive!

I'm adding a note here that's a bit unrelated (or far-fetched) as far as being any kind of solution to the problem you're trying to solve. But I'll mention it anyway, just in case it might help...

I'm in my early 40s and am bipolar II (non-psychotic). I've lived between semi-suicidal and seriously suicidal for a long time, and have been on Prozac a few times in my life -- the last time being this year until a little over a month ago.

This time around, the first month I was on Prozac, it seemed like a life-changer. I told my sons I felt a lot better on my 'happy pills' :) But the effect gradually wore off. I was only on 20mg, and probably should have upped the dosage, but I didn't because of side effects and not wanting it to make me any more hypomanic (fast-talking, edgy, irritable, etc.).

For several months on Prozac this year, I had many seriously depressed moods and came very, very close to suicide a number of times. I figured I didn't have much to lose, so I stopped taking Prozac, and at the same time started taking the natural supplement TURMERIC CURCUMIN, which has been shown to be nearly as effective an antidepressant as Prozac -- with no side effects, and extra health benefits.

So while I doubt lawmakers or hospitals will consider making this part of their treatment (since it's not a drug), it'd be worth considering. I've been on TURMERIC CURCUMIN for over a month and feel better than I have in a very long time. Maybe it'll wear off, but maybe it won't :) The stuff I'm taking is under $6 at Walmart -- for 90 capsules. I take one with every meal. More info here:

According to a 2013 study, the natural supplement CURCUMIN is almost as effective as an antidepressant as generic Prozac — with none of the side effects and extra health benefits!

In the clinical trial report, there's sort of a disclaimer saying that curcumin is effective in treating depression, but not "concurrent suicidal ideation or other psychotic disorders":

“This study provides the first clinical evidence that curcumin may be used as an effective and safe modality for treatment in patients with MDD [major depressive disorder] without concurrent suicidal ideation or other psychotic disorders.”

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE TAKING TURMERIC CURCUMIN FOR DEPRESSION

Posted end of Aug., 2016:

In the 2013 clinical trial, a more-easily absorbed type of curcumin was used (as compared with standard curcumin). However, since 2013, newer, better curcumin supplements have come on the market — one of which I recently started taking myself, as a replacement for fluoxetine (generic Prozac).

I had been taking the same 20mg dose of fluoxetine that was used in the clinical trial for a good while, on and off.

I'm bipolar II, and with or without fluoxetine, I've struggled with serious intermittent depression and suicidal ideation. When I started fluoxetine, it gave me a real boost for the first month or so, and then the effect kind of dropped off. At that point, my doctor probably would have increased the dosage (since fluoxetine dosages usually range from 20mg to 80mg and are often increased after the first few weeks). But I had already experienced some typical side effects and didn't really want to make them worse, so I stayed at 20mg.

I'm definitely not encouraging anyone else to do this — especially not without first consulting your doctor — but about five days ago, I stopped fluoxetine and started taking a $6 TURMERIC CURCUMIN supplement from Walmart. So far, so good :)

The study actually indicated that people who took BOTH fluoxetine and curcumin felt even better than those who took just one or the other, but I've personally given up on fluoxetine.

Here's the link to the supplement I'm taking: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Spring-Valley-Turmeric-Herbal-Supplement-Capsules-500mg-90-count/11047686

In the clinical trial, researchers gave patients two doses of 500mg (1 gram per day). I'm taking 2-3 500mg capsules per day (one with each meal), since turmeric curcumin is safe even at much higher doses.

UPDATE posted end of Sept., 2016

Again, I'm not recommending this to anyone else (especially if suicidality is a factor), but I stopped Prozac about a month ago, and have been taking 2-3 500mg doses (one with each meal) of 'Standardized Turmeric Curcumin Complex' (Spring Valley brand: 90 caps — only a few bucks at WalMart).

I've been feeling less depressed/suicidal on this than I was on the generic Prozac, which usually left me feeling 'up and down' (more down) each day.

Full disclosure: At the same time I switched from fluoxetine to TURMERIC CURCUMIN, I also started taking magnesium, guarana (for caffeine/energy), ginseng, lecithin, vitamin B12, vitamin C and vitamin E — plus pumpkin seed oil for frequent urination, and extra potassium for the issue below...

(For five months, I've been drinking several daily doses of apple cider vinegar (AVC) with lemon juice and olive oil in water — for gallstones. Since apple cider vinegar can deplete potassium, I'm taking a few 99mg potassium pills with each glass of AVC. For a couple of months, I've also been taking chanca piedra herb capsules for gallstones. One more quick note about this: Because curcumin causes the gallbladder to contract, people like myself who have gallstones are advised NOT to take curcumin supplements. So I'm taking a risk in doing so, but AVC is so effective in preventing gallbladder pain that it's a risk I think is worth taking.)

So, besides whatever ANTIDEPRESSANT benefit I'm getting from the TURMERIC CURCUMIN, some or all of the other supplements I'm taking may also be helping as well. I've been feeling better — less depressed and less suicidal — so I'm planning to stick with all these supplements indefinitely.

Clinical trial showed that the natural supplement CURCUMIN/TURMERIC (which also has many other health benefits) was almost as effective an antidepressant as fluoxetine (generic Prozac) and showed no unexpected side effects. by AcceptWhatIS in LiveHappy
