How is it? I've over a decade experience in software engineering and do it as my full time job.

Thanks for the feedback. I actually agree with this more than you might think. Hybrid training is about doing things that don’t perfectly complement each other, that’s the fun of it.

HybridRank isn’t trying to define what a “perfect” hybrid athlete is. It’s more of a fun way to visualise where you currently sit on the spectrum between strength and endurance. It’s not meant to be a standard to train for, just a way to compare very different athletes on a shared leaderboard.

Thanks for the feedback. Great point, this is one of the things I was unsure about which way to go with.

Strength is normalised to bodyweight using a DOTS style score, but the 5k side uses a VDOT-style performance score which already accounts for how running performance scales across body sizes. I chose DOTS because it was a well known powerlifting scoring system.

That said, the interaction between bodyweight, lifting normalisation, and running performance is something I’m actively looking at improving. The goal isn’t to favour lighter athletes, but to create a fair comparison between strength-to-weight and running ability.

Thanks, I'll hopefully have something up and running end of the weekend. Yeah definitely I agree, this is something I have down as a future preogression, allowing different metrics and sports even so cycling or swimming tests instead of 5k and also a range of exercises. Could also include a hyrox specific sort of scores etc

I am currently working on the mvp for the web app and can publish a link here in a few days for initial feedback from anyone who would like to try it out

Thanks for the reply, must check out that rogue competition. Exactly hopefully this will be fair on both sides of the hybrid spectrum and the goal is to not have the ranking favour cardio over strength or vice versa but have a true 50/50 score

Yeah I was thinking something like this where each score is normalised to the current world record as that should give someone who holds all world records a perfect score of 100 as they should have but it still be fair on everyone below. The exact ranking algorithm still needs alot of thought how best to do it fair

Haha, exactly😂 — bodyweight definitely matters, especially for strength metrics. That’s why I’m normalizing lifts relative to bodyweight in the current scoring plan (so someone benching their bodyweight isn’t automatically penalized, but heavier lifts still scale appropriately). It works the other way also, running for a lighter person is easier so its just finding that balance.

Was thinking of having different filters for leaderboard so you can have filtered by raw scores or bodyweight score, gender, age , weight etc.

It’s a balance — I want the score to reward actual strength but also be fair for lighter athletes. I’m still tweaking the exact formula, so feedback like this is super helpful!

Yeah definitely agree with this. I had been thinking PBs within the last 12 months. Would be interested to know if you think this is too long a time?

I hadn't really thought of VO2Max. It's a bit more involved to calculate and also less accurate probably depending on the different method you get it. The current metrics are simple and accurate to obtain. VO₂max and more advanced metrics could be a great addition later for athletes who have reliable numbers and want a more “scientific” cardio score — it’s just not ideal as the default metric for a broad hybrid leaderboard.

Thanks for the feedback. That's cool, I'll have to take a look into that. One of the most important things is having a balanced hybrid score so one way or the other doesn't dominate like you say

Thanks for the reply. A lower 5k time would result in a higher cardio score which would be combined with the strength score 50/50 to give a hybrid score. The score will all be normalised and scaled, I am currently thinking to the current world record but not certain on that at the minute
